Amit Shah Sets 65-Seat Target for BJP in Uttarakhand, Calls for Door-to-Door Campaign Ahead of 2027 Polls

Addressing the state’s 26th Foundation Day celebrations, the Union Home Minister urged party workers to strengthen grassroots outreach, highlighted development and border security initiatives, and launched a political attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.
DEHRADUN: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set an ambitious electoral target for the BJP in Uttarakhand, asking party workers to secure at least 65 of the state’s 70 Assembly seats in next year’s elections.

He called for an intensive door-to-door campaign, stressing that the party must connect directly with people and address their concerns to retain power for a third consecutive term.

Shah appealed on Friday while addressing a gathering organised to celebrate Uttarakhand’s 26th Foundation Day.

He described the Himalayan state as an important contributor to India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation. He said its progress would have a wider significance for the country’s development journey.

The Home Minister also inaugurated several completed projects and laid foundation stones for new initiatives involving a combined investment of Rs 1,475.31 crore.

Turning his attention to the opposition, Shah criticised Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Bachao’ campaign, alleging that it was intended to protect infiltrators rather than safeguard the interests of genuine voters.

He called for the identification and removal of illegal infiltrators from electoral records as well as from the country.

Shah said the BJP wanted to establish Uttarakhand as a prosperous, secure and culturally influential state. Referring to its religious and cultural heritage, he said the party was committed to giving Devbhoomi a prominent place in India’s cultural landscape.

He also accused the Congress of pursuing a divisive political agenda, referring to its alleged proposal for establishing a Muslim university in the state.

Recalling the BJP’s electoral performance in Uttarakhand, Shah pointed out that the party had secured 57 Assembly seats in 2017 and 47 in 2022. He urged workers to improve upon both performances and cross the 65-seat mark in the forthcoming election.

Taking another swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Shah said political visits and public appearances would not help the Congress win people’s confidence.

He claimed that BJP workers were already active across the state, working continuously to resolve local issues and strengthen the party’s presence at the grassroots level.

On the economic front, Shah highlighted the expansion of tourism, claiming that the sector had registered growth of 380 per cent.

He said the government was also working to change Uttarakhand’s economic character by reducing its dependence on remittances and moving towards industrial development and employment generation.

Discussing national security, the Home Minister referred to the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot airstrikes and the 2025 Operation Sindoor as examples of the Modi government’s approach towards dealing with security threats.

He maintained that the country’s border protection arrangements had become stronger under the present government.

He also cited development expenditure of Rs 270 crore for 51 villages situated in strategically important border areas under the Centre’s Vibrant Villages Programme.

According to Shah, improving infrastructure and livelihood opportunities in remote settlements was essential to prevent people from leaving their ancestral homes.

Earlier, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accused the Congress of questioning the credibility of electronic voting machines and the electoral system whenever it suffered an electoral defeat.

He said voters in Uttarakhand would not be influenced by what he described as misleading claims made by the opposition.

Dhami also criticised Congress leaders over remarks concerning National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who hails from Uttarakhand.

The Chief Minister’s comments followed Rahul Gandhi’s description of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Doval as the “villains of this story” ahead of an INDIA bloc demonstration against the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Uttarakhand Chief Minister also questioned the Congress leadership’s silence over remarks allegedly made by its INDIA bloc ally and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who was accused of describing people from Uttarakhand as infiltrators.

Defending his government’s record, Dhami said more than 100 alleged members of the examination paper-leak and cheating network had been arrested and sent to jail.

He further claimed that over 35,000 young people had secured government employment during his tenure and that recruitment examinations had been conducted without cheating or corruption.

With the next Assembly election approaching, Shah’s 65-seat target signals the BJP’s intention to turn its organisational machinery into an intensive statewide campaign, while the exchanges between the ruling party and Congress indicate that electoral politics in Uttarakhand is already gathering momentum.
