One of the topmost stars of her time- Dimple Kapadia was just a teenager when she was cast in the lead role of the blockbuster Bobby alongside Rishi Kapoor for director Raj Kapoor’s film and rest is the history.
Through her work over the next decade, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema’s leading actresses. While her initial roles often relied on her perceived beauty and glamorous appeal, Dimple Kapadia was keen to challenge herself and expand her range.
Dimple Kapadia, in an earlier chat, spoke about how she landed the role and called this era of her life “magical” where she got everything that she could have ever wished for. She also recalled how just before this phase, she was suffering from severe skin disease and a family friend had threatened to get her “ostracised” from her school. Dimple was only 12 at the time.
Talking to the media Dimple Kapadia said that her father Chunnibhai Kapadia knew a lot of influential people in the film industry and a “famous director”, who was “like a family friend” had actually said something horribly unkind to Dimple. “I was suffering from leprosy at that time. I was about 12 years old. I had it on my elbow. So this man, turned around and said, ‘I’ll see that you get ostracised from school’. That was the first time I heard that word. I didn’t even know what that meant,” she recalled.
At age 15, she married Rajesh Khanna, then aged 30, after a short courtship. Having been a fan of Rajesh Khanna, she later said marrying him was the “biggest high” of her life during this period.
