Shubhada Varadkar Honoured With Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Odissi

The Mumbai-based dancer, who discovered Odissi after initially training in Bharatanatyam, says the honour brings renewed energy as well as a responsibility to keep refining her art.

Shubhada Varadkar has received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from President Droupadi Murmu, capping a journey shaped by unconventional choices and legendary mentorship.

For Shubhada Varadkar, dance was never a family inheritance. It was a personal choice that gradually became a lifelong vocation—and decades later, brought her one of India’s most significant national honours in the performing arts.

The 65-year-old Mumbai-based dancer was presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Odissi by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhavan on Thursday, marking a major recognition of a career that began in a household where academics, law, medicine and public service were far more familiar pursuits than classical dance.

Varadkar grew up as the daughter of freedom fighters Manohar and Manik Varadkar, who took part in the Quit India Movement.

Her maternal family also included the celebrated pathologist V R Khanolkar, regarded as a pioneer of pathology and medical research in India and the first Dean of the Tata Memorial Cancer Research Institute.

Yet, despite the family’s formidable intellectual and public-service legacy, dance had no established place in the household.

Varadkar recalls that her parents did not have a particular idea of classical dance as a profession. But when she expressed a desire to dance, they did not stand in her way.

Her mother encouraged her interest, while her father’s response was essentially that she should pursue what she enjoyed.

That freedom to choose eventually shaped the course of her life.

From Bharatanatyam to Odissi

Varadkar’s formal dance journey began after her Class 10 examinations. Her parents had set a simple condition: she could pursue systematic training if she secured a distinction.

She began with Bharatanatyam under Guru Shri Mani in Mumbai, largely because the classes were conveniently located near her home.

The turning point came when the legendary Odissi exponent Kelucharan Mohapatra conducted a workshop at Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts.

With the permission of her teacher, whom she describes as open-minded, Varadkar attended the workshop.

The experience introduced her to the flowing movements and lyrical quality of Odissi, and she was drawn deeply into the form.

Her interest soon took her beyond Mumbai.

She travelled to Bhubaneswar to learn from Mohapatra at his gurukul, becoming part of the last generation of students to experience his traditional teaching system there.

For Varadkar, the gurukul was an education unlike a conventional classroom. There were no rigid class timings or examinations.

Learning was centred on observing, practising and absorbing the art.

She recalls watching Mohapatra work with senior dancers, including Sanjukta Panigrahi, and remembers the extraordinary detail he brought to choreography.

According to Varadkar, he could develop dozens of movements and poses around a single word before choosing the one that best expressed it.

That approach, she says, continues to influence the choreography performed by her today.

Scholar, teacher and dancer

Dance was not her only academic pursuit. Varadkar studied economics and later became a professor at RR Ruia College.

Alongside her teaching career, she continued to develop as a performer and teacher of Odissi, building a body of work rooted in the tradition she inherited from Mohapatra while developing her own artistic expression.

Her family story also carries an unusual connection to India’s military history.

She is the grand-niece of Savitri Bai Khanolkar, the Swiss-born artist who designed the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military gallantry award.

Savitri Bai, who adopted India as her home, was deeply interested in Indian scriptures and languages.

Varadkar remembers that Savitri Bai travelled specially to Mumbai to attend her arangetram, marking an important moment in her formal dance journey.

Varadkar is also a first cousin of Leo Varadkar, the former Prime Minister of Ireland. She says the family takes pride in his political career, noting that public service and social engagement have long been part of the broader Varadkar family tradition.

Recognition after a difficult personal journey

The Akademi award comes after a career marked not only by artistic dedication but also by considerable personal resilience.

Varadkar is a two-time cancer survivor, having overcome the disease in 2006 and again in 2025.

She has written two books drawing on those experiences and is now working on another book examining Odramagadhi, an ancient regional tradition regarded as an important precursor to Odissi.

For Varadkar, the national honour is therefore less a destination than another point on an ongoing artistic journey.

She says recognition brings fresh energy, but also places an obligation on an artist to keep improving.

That philosophy mirrors the path that brought her to Odissi in the first place: a choice made without a family tradition to follow, transformed through disciplined learning into a career that has now earned national recognition.
