Almost Impossible Feat! British Runner Completes 50 Marathons Across US States in Just 22 Days
William Goodge covers 2,108 km across America in an extraordinary endurance test, finishing at the New York City Marathon; record-breaking mission honours his mother and supports cancer research.
NEW YORK: Running a single marathon of 42.195 km is considered a major test of human endurance.
Now imagine accomplishing the equivalent in all 50 American states, repeatedly pushing the body through exhaustion, travelling thousands of kilometres between destinations and completing the entire undertaking in little more than three weeks.
That is the extraordinary feat achieved by British endurance athlete William Goodge, whose accomplishment comes remarkably close to what many would regard as physically impossible.
Goodge completed his ambitious American expedition on November 1, 2026, crossing the finish line of the New York City Marathon.
His record-setting journey lasted 22 days, 17 hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds, earning him a Guinness World Records title for the fastest time to complete a marathon distance in all 50 US states.
Over the course of the challenge, he covered approximately 2,108 kilometres (1,310 miles).
What makes the achievement particularly astonishing is that the distances were not covered in one continuous run.
Goodge had to complete a marathon-length run in each state, then arrange his onward journey to the next destination, often leaving little opportunity for proper recovery.
Named ‘Mission America’, the undertaking commenced in Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 9 and concluded in New York on November 1.
The demanding schedule meant that running was only one part of the battle. Moving between 50 states within such a compressed timeframe required an elaborate transportation network involving private aircraft, commercial flights, road travel and an RV.
Goodwin, the organisation supporting the expedition, coordinated the complicated travel arrangements.
Every transfer had to fit into a tightly controlled timetable, leaving Goodge with the enormous challenge of balancing physical exertion with food, hydration, sleep and recovery.
He also had to contend with changing weather and vastly different running environments across the country.
The remarkable performance, however, was driven by something deeper than the pursuit of a world record. Behind Mission America was a personal tragedy that transformed Goodge’s life.
His mother, Amanda, died in 2018 after battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.
Rather than allowing his grief to remain a private burden, he gradually turned long-distance running into a means of honouring her memory and supporting people affected by cancer.
Goodge has previously spoken about how running helped him deal with the loss. His first marathon, undertaken on Christmas Day following his mother’s death, became a turning point.
The effort raised nearly £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and marked the beginning of his journey as a charity endurance runner.
Explaining his motivation on the official Mission America website, Goodge said that although nothing could bring his mother back, he could use her memory to demonstrate what a remarkable, strong and loving person she had been.
The latest expedition continued that commitment. Mission America was organised to generate financial support for Stand Up To Cancer, with donations directed towards cancer research.
The final amount raised through the campaign had not been confirmed in the available information.
Goodge’s American achievement is also part of a growing record of extraordinary endurance challenges. In an earlier undertaking, he ran approximately 850 miles across the United Kingdom in 16 days, collecting more than £30,000 for charity.
His latest accomplishment, however, takes endurance running into an exceptional category.
Covering a marathon distance in every US state, managing the physical consequences of repeated exertion and completing the entire mission in under 23 days represents an extraordinary combination of athletic ability, mental resilience and logistical precision.
For Goodge, the Guinness record is more than a sporting distinction. It is also a tribute to his mother and an attempt to turn personal loss into hope for others fighting cancer.
