Argentina President Javier Milei to Skip FIFA World Cup Final, Cites Superstition and ‘Lucky Rituals’ Behind Decision
Argentina President Javier Milei has decided against travelling to Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final against Spain, saying he does not want to break a sequence of personal rituals that he believes has coincided with his country’s unbeaten run in the tournament.
Instead of watching the title clash from the stadium, Milei will follow the match from the presidential residence in Olivos, exactly as he has done throughout Argentina’s previous seven World Cup fixtures.
The Argentine leader explained that every match he has watched from home has ended in victory for the defending champions, making him reluctant to alter what he now considers a fortunate routine.
He also revealed that he intends to wear the same heavy jacket throughout the final, convinced that it has become part of the team’s winning streak as Argentina chases a second consecutive FIFA World Cup title.
Although football matches are ultimately decided by the players on the field, rituals and superstitions continue to occupy a special place in the sport.
Across Latin America—and particularly in Argentina—such traditions, popularly known as cábalas, are deeply woven into football culture.
Supporters often believe that repeating familiar routines can somehow influence the fortunes of their beloved national team, especially during major international tournaments.
Speculation had been growing that Milei would travel to New Jersey to attend the final alongside United States President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
However, during an interview with Buenos Aires-based radio station El Observador, the Argentine President firmly dismissed the possibility, saying he would remain at the official presidential residence and watch the match from there.
During the interview, Milei openly admitted that his decision was driven entirely by superstition.
Recalling one of his personal rituals, he said that because he avoids switching on the heating during winter, he wears a thick jacket carrying the logo of an oil company.
According to him, he briefly removed the jacket during Argentina’s match against Switzerland after feeling too warm, only to see the opposition score shortly afterwards.
He immediately put the jacket back on and has not taken it off during a match since, believing it has become a symbol of good fortune.
Milei’s beliefs mirror those of countless Argentine football supporters, many of whom faithfully follow their own cábalas whenever the national team is enjoying a successful run.
Some fans wear the same clothes for every match, others refuse to wash their Argentina jerseys until the tournament ends, while many insist on sitting in the same place or watching every game with the same group of friends, convinced that changing even the smallest habit could bring bad luck.
For several supporters, these rituals extend beyond clothing and seating arrangements.
Some deliberately avoid watching matches live if they believe Argentina scored while they were away from the television during an earlier game, fearing that returning to the screen might alter the team’s fortunes.
This World Cup has also produced several unusual fan traditions. One widely shared video on social media showed a group of Argentine supporters reading passages from the Bible just as Argentina began scoring against Egypt.
Convinced that the timing was more than coincidence, the group has reportedly repeated the ritual before every subsequent match.
Another long-standing superstition involves placing figurines of rival players—or pieces of paper bearing their names—inside a freezer, believing the symbolic act will weaken the opposition’s luck.
The culture of superstition extends beyond ordinary supporters and has even shaped the behaviour of Argentina’s political leadership.
Successive presidents have generally avoided attending crucial World Cup matches, fearing they might unintentionally bring misfortune to the national team.
That belief traces its roots to the 1990 FIFA World Cup, when then-President Carlos Menem visited the Argentine squad shortly before its shock defeat to Cameroon in the tournament opener.
Following the unexpected loss, Menem was widely labelled a mufa—an individual believed to bring bad luck.
Since then, no serving Argentine president is known to have attended a World Cup match involving the national team, making Milei’s decision part of a long-standing political and sporting tradition.
