Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026: 30 Lakh Diyas, 2,100 Drones to Turn Ram Nagari into a Spectacular Celebration
AYODHYA: Ayodhya is preparing for one of its biggest cultural spectacles as the 10th edition of Deepotsav reaches its grand finale on November 7, with an ambitious combination of religious ceremonies, international performances and cutting-edge visual technology.
The city’s riverfront is expected to glow under more than 30 lakh traditional earthen lamps, while a synchronised formation of 2,100 indigenous drones will transform the night sky into a visual retelling of the Ramayana.
The celebrations, spread across five days from November 5, are turning several parts of the temple town into elaborate cultural and festive spaces.
The centrepiece will be the illumination of 56 ghats along the Saryu at Ram Ki Paidi. Around 35,000 college students from Ayodhya are involved in preparations for the massive lamp-lighting exercise, officials said.
The scale of the event reflects the remarkable expansion of Deepotsav since its launch in 2017, when approximately 1.71 lakh lamps were illuminated.
The number has grown dramatically over the years, with 26.17 lakh diyas lit during the 2025 celebration, earning the event a Guinness World Record. This year’s target is to cross the 30-lakh mark.
A grand tribute to the Ramayana in the sky and on the river
One of the major attractions will be a drone presentation featuring 2,100 locally developed unmanned aircraft.
Through coordinated aerial patterns, the show will recreate important episodes from the Ramayana. The number of drones is almost double that deployed during last year’s festival.
The return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya will also be portrayed through a specially designed floating stage, where performers will combine dance, music and Hindi narration to bring the legendary homecoming to life.
Spectators will additionally witness an eight-minute laser spectacle, a 20-minute projection-mapping presentation and musical fireworks.
Technology will offer visitors another way to experience the epic.
A dedicated augmented reality application, compatible with Android and iOS devices, will allow people to view five three-dimensional Ramayana scenes by scanning specially marked locations around Ram Ki Paidi.
The digital experience will enable visitors to capture and share the visual presentations against the actual surroundings.
A wider online campaign is also being planned through nationwide painting and short-video competitions, with organisers aiming to engage an audience of five crore people.
International performers and India’s regional traditions share the stage
Deepotsav 2026 will have a strong international presence, with Ramlila groups from South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Laos and Thailand scheduled to present their interpretations of the Ramayana.
Their performances will showcase the distinctive theatrical styles, traditional attire, musical influences and languages of their respective countries.
The cultural extravaganza will extend across 12 stages, with approximately 2,500 performers taking part. The arrangements include six smaller platforms, four medium-sized stages and two major performance venues.
Artists representing 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh will join performers from other parts of the country.
The programme will showcase diverse folk traditions, including Dollu Kunitha from Karnataka, Ghoomar from Rajasthan and Jhijhiya from Bihar.
Tharu cultural performances from Pilibhit and Vantangiya presentations from Gorakhpur will also feature.
Organisers expect around 1,000 artist groups from different states to participate in performances at various locations throughout the city.
The streets and public spaces will receive a festive makeover, with 13 specially designed entrance gateways, 20 selfie locations and themed displays along important routes.
The stretch connecting Lata Mangeshkar Chowk with Ram Ki Paidi will feature artistic representations of significant episodes from the Ramayana.
Another highlight will be a procession of 22 decorative tableaux depicting the seven sections, or kands, of the epic. Ram Rath, Ram Darbar and Pushpak Viman will be among the prominent displays.
Ramkatha Park will host sand-art presentations and other installations inspired by the religious and cultural heritage of the city.
Celebrations to continue beyond November 7
Although the principal programme is scheduled for November 7, the festivities will continue until November 9.
Further public performances are planned for November 8, while the following day will feature a separate drone presentation exclusively for residents of Ayodhya.
The organisers have also extended invitations to 34 Indian ambassadors serving in different countries to attend this year’s Deepotsav, underlining the festival’s international outreach.
Local artisans and rural women benefit from festival preparations
Beyond its religious and tourism significance, the expanding festival is also creating business opportunities for traditional pottery makers.
Women artisans from Gyaspur village in Ayodhya and Kajiyapur and Bhaghar Jheel in neighbouring Barabanki district have received an order worth Rs 12.8 lakh for supplying 1.60 lakh earthen lamps.
The initiative is providing direct economic opportunities to 25 women involved in pottery-related work.
The state government is also seeking to modernise traditional pottery production.
According to officials, 197 potters had received electric pottery wheels by October 2026 to help improve manufacturing capacity and reduce the physical effort involved in the craft.
Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs Amrit Abhijat said preparations for welcoming visitors must go hand in hand with improving everyday conditions for residents.
He emphasised that successful tourism development depended not merely on organising large events but also on maintaining clean surroundings, ensuring safe movement, providing dependable public services and making the city more comfortable for its inhabitants.
With its combination of religious traditions, international cultural exchanges, modern technology, and livelihood opportunities, Deepotsav 2026 is set to showcase Ayodhya as a destination where heritage and contemporary celebrations converge.
