Iran Mocks JD Vance After He Blames War for Republican Defeat in US Midterm Elections
TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: The political repercussions of the US-Israeli war against Iran have spilled into an increasingly bitter exchange between Washington and Tehran, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf ridiculing US Vice President JD Vance for attributing the Republican Party’s midterm election defeat partly to the conflict.
In a pointed response posted on X on Thursday, Ghalibaf portrayed the Trump administration as unwilling to reconsider its military strategy despite the electoral damage.
He also questioned Vance’s willingness to challenge the president over the direction of the war.
Ghalibaf suggested that Washington was preparing another phase of military operations against Iran while allowing its relationship with Israel to take precedence over American interests.
His remarks came after Vance publicly acknowledged that the administration’s Iran policy had alienated a section of voters who had supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The exchange followed the Democrats’ sweeping performance in the November 3 midterm elections, in which they captured control of both chambers of Congress.
The Republican setback was particularly significant because Democrats also made gains in several states traditionally considered Republican strongholds.
The result has weakened Trump’s political position and threatens to complicate his legislative agenda for the remaining two years of his presidency.
Vance identifies Iran war as major reason for electoral setback
In an unusually candid assessment published on Wednesday, Vance argued that Republicans had lost because many voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 had turned against the party.
He rejected the suggestion that poor voter participation was responsible for the outcome. Instead, he pointed to widespread dissatisfaction with the administration’s decisions, particularly the prolonged military confrontation with Iran.
Vance identified four concerns that had influenced former Republican supporters: bringing the conflict to an end, tackling inflation and household expenses, restoring the administration’s America priorities, and reassessing Washington’s relationship with Israel.
He maintained that the war had become a decisive political liability. Vance also challenged supporters of the military campaign to explain whether its strategic objectives justified the loss of Republican control of the Senate.
His remarks indicated that the party would have to acknowledge public dissatisfaction with the conflict before attempting to rebuild its electoral support.
Iran presents election outcome as rejection of war
Ghalibaf had earlier welcomed the Democratic gains, interpreting the outcome as evidence that American voters were increasingly uncomfortable with the military campaign and its economic consequences.
Iranian officials have repeatedly argued that Washington’s military intervention has imposed a substantial domestic cost on the United States.
The disruption of energy supplies through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz has contributed to higher oil and fuel prices, adding to inflationary pressures on American households.
The US and Israel launched their military campaign against Iran on February 28, 2026, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeting Iranian military and strategic infrastructure.
Tehran responded with attacks on American positions in the Gulf region and measures that severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has continued despite unsuccessful efforts to secure a lasting settlement.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has also dismissed the possibility that a change in the political balance in Washington would automatically improve relations between the two countries.
In a message issued after the US election results, he warned that any renewed American military action would provoke a substantially wider conflict.
He also argued that Washington’s hostility towards Tehran would remain irrespective of which political party exercised power.
Trump defends military campaign despite acknowledging political damage
President Donald Trump has continued to stand by the decision to attack Iran, even while acknowledging that the conflict contributed to his party’s electoral difficulties.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump accepted that the war had pushed up petrol prices and influenced voters.
However, he argued that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons was a more important consideration than the immediate political consequences.
He maintained that the military operation had been necessary and indicated that he would make the same decision again.
Trump also endorsed Vance’s assessment that the conflict had affected Republican prospects, saying he was already familiar with the vice-president’s position.
The president nevertheless offered no clear indication about whether Vance would receive his backing in a possible 2028 presidential contest. Asked about his deputy’s political future, Trump said it was too early to know who would enter the race.
Regional tensions remain a concern
The confrontation has had consequences well beyond the immediate US-Iran battlefield.
Israeli military operations in Lebanon and attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement have added to instability across the region, while threats to energy infrastructure and commercial shipping have kept international markets on edge.
For Tehran, the Republican defeat has offered an opportunity to argue that the war has weakened Washington politically and economically.
However, the Iranian leadership remains wary that Trump could respond to domestic political pressure by intensifying military operations.
The contrasting positions of Trump and Vance also expose divisions within the Republican administration over the political costs and future direction of the conflict.
With Democrats now controlling Congress, the war is likely to remain a major issue in American domestic politics as well as in the wider Middle East.
