Bihar Ganga Boat Tragedy: 13 Dead, Including Children; Four Feared Missing in Vaishali

A boat carrying villagers to a feast overturned near Rampur Shyamchand in Raghopur on Tuesday night. Seven survivors were taken for treatment as rescue teams and local divers searched for missing passengers.

VAISHALI, BIHAR: A boat accident on the Ganga has claimed at least 13 lives in Bihar’s Vaishali district, with children accounting for a large share of the victims, according to reports published late Tuesday.

Four people were still reported missing, while seven survivors were receiving medical treatment as rescue operations continued in the Raghopur area.

The accident occurred at around 8.30 pm near Rampur Shyamchand village, within the Raghopur police station area.

The passengers were reportedly travelling by a small boat to attend a feast at the residence of Singheshwar Rai near Mata Maharani Sthan in Bhagtan Tola when the vessel overturned in the river.

The number of people aboard was initially estimated at around 15 to 20. A later report put the number at 24 or more, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the passenger count in the immediate aftermath.

The exact circumstances that caused the boat to capsize were not immediately established.

Villagers launch rescue efforts as administration rushes to the spot

Residents in the vicinity were among the first to respond after the boat went down. Local people entered the rescue effort, helping pull victims from the water and arrange medical assistance.

Those rescued were taken initially to a primary health centre in the Raghopur Fatehpur area, with seven subsequently reported to have been referred for further treatment.

A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with local divers, joined the search operation. Senior officials, including Vaishali Superintendent of Police Shubhank Mishra, reached the area to oversee the response.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Subodh Kumar, the Raghopur station house officer, and the Sub-Divisional Officer were also reported to be at the scene.

With several people initially unaccounted for, the search focused on locating those who had fallen into the river.

The darkness and conditions in the water added to the challenge of rescue efforts, according to reports from the area.

Most victims reportedly children

The tragedy has caused deep distress in Rampur Shyamchand, where families gathered at the accident site and medical facilities while awaiting news of their relatives.

A report published late Tuesday identified several of the deceased as children and young people from the village.

Those named included Pinky Kumari, 13; Ankita Kumari, 6; Naman Kumar, 10; and Alisha Kumari, 18, along with other victims.

Authorities were still confirming the identities of the remaining deceased at the time of the report.

The deaths have renewed concern about the risks faced by residents of riverine settlements who depend on boats to travel between locations.

However, the precise cause of Tuesday’s accident and whether any safety equipment was available on board had not been established in the reports available.

Bihar government announces compensation.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the loss of life and announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the family of each deceased person.

He also directed officials to accelerate rescue operations and ensure appropriate medical care for the injured.

Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Raghopur MLA, also expressed condolences and said he had spoken with residents and officials, urging them to speed up rescue and treatment efforts.

The rescue operation remained a priority as authorities worked to account for everyone who had been on the boat.

The final toll, the identities of all victims and the circumstances that led to the vessel overturning will need to be confirmed by the administration.

The disaster has left families grieving and brought renewed attention to passenger safety on inland waterways, particularly when small boats are used to transport groups across rivers after dark.
