CJP Leaders Allegedly Detained at Delhi Airport Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest; Supreme Court Contempt Plea Filed

The Cockroach Janta Party alleges a pre-planned police operation to prevent its leaders from joining the demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while Delhi Police says preventive detentions were made to maintain law and order.

NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday alleged that Delhi Police detained three of its prominent leaders immediately after their flight arrived in the national capital, preventing them from reaching a planned protest at Jantar Mantar.

The party described the action as a deliberate attempt to weaken its leadership before the demonstration began.

According to the CJP, Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were taken into custody at the airport and moved to an undisclosed location. The party also released a video that it said showed the leaders being detained after landing in Delhi.

In a statement, the CJP accused the police of interfering with the right to peaceful protest and freedom of movement.

It demanded the immediate release of the three leaders, alleging that their detention was part of a pre-arranged effort to prevent them from participating in the demonstration.

Around 6000 Detained, Police Cite Preventive Measures

Delhi Police officials said  people arriving in groups from different parts of the country had been detained ahead of the proposed protest. Officials also said nearly 50 people with criminal antecedents were taken into custody as a preventive step to avert possible disturbances.

The police action came amid heightened security arrangements across the capital. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and CJP leader Ratna Singh were also reported to have been detained earlier on Saturday.

The CJP demonstration was planned at Jantar Mantar in connection with opposition demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Security checks, barricades and the deployment of personnel at key locations formed part of the arrangements to prevent any disruption.

Supreme Court Contempt Petition Raises Metro Closure Issue

The police measures also triggered a legal challenge. A petition filed in the Supreme Court on Saturday sought contempt proceedings against authorities over alleged non-compliance with the court’s October 9 direction concerning the movement of Delhi Metro services and Indian Railways trains on October 10.

Filed by Shailendra Mani Tripathi, the plea names Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other officials as respondents. It alleges that metro station closures continued despite the Supreme Court’s direction that there should be no complete restriction on the movement of metro and railway services in connection with the protest.

The allegations contained in the petition remain claims made by the petitioner; the filing itself does not establish that contempt has occurred.

The court’s subsequent consideration of the plea and any response from the authorities would be necessary to establish the matter’s legal status.

Security Checks Cause Traffic Snarls in Central Delhi

Heavy traffic was reported in several parts of central Delhi on Saturday as security personnel conducted checks at important routes leading towards the protest venue. Barricades and intensified surveillance slowed vehicle movement, resulting in congestion on several stretches.

The restrictions and security arrangements affected traffic flow as police worked to prevent a potential breach of public order during the planned demonstration.

BJP Chief Accuses Opposition of Creating Instability

Meanwhile, BJP national president Nitin Nabin criticised opposition leaders on Friday, accusing them of attempting to disturb the country’s peace and undermine its development.

Speaking to reporters, Nabin alleged that certain political groups were creating an atmosphere of instability despite the efforts of citizens to contribute to national progress. He referred to the Congress-led INDIA bloc and the CJP while making his remarks.

Nabin also warned opposition leaders that the public was watching their actions and what he described as a contest between groups seeking to create disorder.

The developments placed Saturday’s planned demonstration under an intense political and security spotlight, with the CJP alleging suppression of peaceful dissent, the police defending preventive action as necessary for maintaining order, and a Supreme Court petition challenging aspects of the restrictions imposed around the protest.
