A dramatic turn in education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike unfolded on Saturday when Delhi Police shifted him to Safdarjung Hospital, citing serious health concerns after three weeks of continuous fasting.
The move, carried out under heavy police presence at Jantar Mantar, triggered chaos at the protest venue and ignited a fresh political confrontation over the government’s handling of student protests and alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
The 59-year-old environmentalist and engineer has been on an indefinite fast since June 28, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in medical entrance examinations and seeking greater transparency and accountability in the country’s examination system.
His campaign has steadily transformed into a nationwide movement drawing support from students, civil society organisations and several opposition leaders.
The protest site at Jantar Mantar had witnessed growing participation over the past few weeks, with hundreds of students gathering in solidarity.
The campaign also received backing from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), whose online mobilisation and public demonstrations helped amplify the issue across the country.
Delhi Police maintained that Wangchuk’s transfer to the hospital was carried out strictly in accordance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court and on the recommendation of medical experts monitoring his condition.
According to police officials, his health had deteriorated following the prolonged fast, making immediate medical supervision essential.
In an official statement, police said that while executing the court’s directions, some protesters attempted to obstruct the operation, leading to a brief commotion at the protest venue.
Authorities later appealed to demonstrators to vacate Jantar Mantar peacefully after Wangchuk was admitted to the hospital.
Videos circulating on social media showed police personnel moving swiftly onto the stage before carrying Wangchuk away using white sheets as supporters surrounded the area in confusion.
The scenes sparked emotional reactions from students and volunteers, many of whom questioned the manner in which the activist was removed.
The police action followed judicial directions issued earlier this week. On Thursday, a Delhi court instructed government doctors to examine Wangchuk’s health every day, observing that the protection of human life must remain the highest priority.
The order came while hearing a petition filed by advocate and activist Rakesh Kumar Saini, who argued that the activist’s prolonged fast could become life-threatening if urgent medical intervention was not ensured.
The Delhi High Court also observed that every citizen’s life is invaluable and directed that all necessary medical treatment should be provided whenever required to safeguard Wangchuk’s health.
Widely recognised for pioneering sustainable water conservation projects in the Himalayan region, Wangchuk has earned global recognition for developing innovative artificial glacier technologies and promoting environmentally sustainable development in Ladakh.
Only a few hours before being taken to hospital, Wangchuk reaffirmed his determination to continue the campaign, saying that many governments in India had faced powerful public movements that began on a much smaller scale.
He described the present struggle as one centred on protecting the future of education.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of mounting concerns over the integrity of competitive examinations.
Last month, nearly 2.2 million medical aspirants were required to retake an entrance examination after the original test was cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak that triggered nationwide outrage.
The examination controversy, coupled with disputes surrounding the evaluation process in separate school examinations, has intensified public anger and fuelled widespread protests demanding reforms, transparency and stronger safeguards in the recruitment and admission process.
Political support for Wangchuk’s campaign continued to grow on Saturday. Veteran social activist Anna Hazare appealed to the Union Government to engage in direct dialogue with the education reformer instead of allowing the situation to deteriorate further.
Speaking to reporters, Hazare said the government should clearly communicate whether it accepts or rejects Wangchuk’s demands, but stressed there was no justification for avoiding discussions.
He remarked that meaningful dialogue remains the cornerstone of a healthy democracy.
Saturday marked the 21st consecutive day of Wangchuk’s hunger strike. Despite visible physical weakness, he has repeatedly declared that he will continue the fast until meaningful action is taken on his demands.
Hazare’s intervention inevitably revived memories of his own anti-corruption movement in 2011, when his fast demanding the Lokpal legislation evolved into one of India’s largest mass protests in recent history.
While Delhi Police insisted that the hospitalisation was undertaken solely to protect Wangchuk’s health in compliance with judicial directions, leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party challenged that explanation.
CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke alleged that Wangchuk had been forcibly removed from the protest site.
Several students also claimed that police used force while dispersing demonstrators, allegations that have not yet been officially addressed by the authorities.
Protesters further alleged that officials initially introduced themselves as members of a medical team before asking volunteers to step aside and subsequently taking Wangchuk away for hospitalisation.
CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das accused the police of misinterpreting the Delhi High Court’s order.
According to him, the court had directed continuous health monitoring and medical intervention only if Wangchuk’s condition significantly deteriorated.
He claimed the activist’s health was being examined regularly by the protest organisers’ own medical team and argued that the police action amounted to a violation of the spirit of the court’s directions.
Delhi Police has not yet issued a detailed response to these specific allegations.
With Wangchuk now under medical supervision and the protest entering a critical phase, the controversy has once again placed India’s examination system, student welfare and the right to peaceful democratic protest at the centre of national debate.

करीब तीन सप्ताह से जारी उनके आमरण अनशन के बीच हुई इस कार्रवाई से प्रदर्शन स्थल पर अफरा-तफरी का माहौल बन गया और परीक्षा प्रणाली की पारदर्शिता को लेकर चल रही बहस एक बार फिर राष्ट्रीय राजनीति के केंद्र में आ गई।
59 वर्षीय वांगचुक ने 28 जून से अनिश्चितकालीन उपवास शुरू किया था। उनकी प्रमुख मांग मेडिकल प्रवेश परीक्षाओं में कथित अनियमितताओं की नैतिक जिम्मेदारी लेते हुए केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की है।
इसके साथ ही वे देश की परीक्षा प्रणाली में पारदर्शिता, जवाबदेही और व्यापक सुधार लागू करने की मांग कर रहे हैं। समय के साथ उनका आंदोलन छात्रों, सामाजिक संगठनों और विभिन्न राजनीतिक दलों के नेताओं का समर्थन हासिल करता गया।
पिछले कुछ सप्ताहों में जंतर-मंतर आंदोलन का प्रमुख केंद्र बन गया, जहां सैकड़ों छात्र वांगचुक के समर्थन में जुटे। इस अभियान को कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) के ऑनलाइन अभियानों और सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रमों से भी गति मिली, जिससे यह मुद्दा देशभर में व्यापक चर्चा का विषय बन गया।
दिल्ली पुलिस का कहना है कि वांगचुक को अस्पताल ले जाने का निर्णय दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय के निर्देशों और चिकित्सकीय विशेषज्ञों की सलाह के आधार पर लिया गया। पुलिस के अनुसार, लंबे समय तक उपवास के कारण उनकी शारीरिक स्थिति कमजोर हो रही थी और तत्काल चिकित्सकीय निगरानी आवश्यक हो गई थी।
पुलिस द्वारा जारी आधिकारिक बयान में कहा गया कि न्यायालय के आदेशों का पालन करते समय कुछ प्रदर्शनकारियों ने कार्रवाई में बाधा डालने का प्रयास किया, जिससे कुछ समय के लिए तनाव की स्थिति उत्पन्न हुई।
इसके बाद पुलिस ने प्रदर्शनकारियों से शांतिपूर्वक जंतर-मंतर खाली करने की अपील भी की।
घटनास्थल से सामने आए वीडियो में पुलिसकर्मी तेजी से मंच की ओर बढ़ते दिखाई दिए। इसके बाद वांगचुक को सफेद चादरों की सहायता से वहां से हटाकर वाहन तक ले जाया गया। इस दौरान मौजूद छात्रों और स्वयंसेवकों में असमंजस और भावनात्मक माहौल देखने को मिला।
यह कार्रवाई गुरुवार को आए न्यायिक निर्देशों के बाद हुई। दिल्ली की अदालत ने सरकारी चिकित्सकों को वांगचुक के स्वास्थ्य की प्रतिदिन जांच करने का निर्देश देते हुए कहा था कि किसी भी नागरिक के जीवन की रक्षा सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता होनी चाहिए।
यह आदेश अधिवक्ता एवं सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता राकेश कुमार सैनी की याचिका पर पारित किया गया था। याचिका में आशंका व्यक्त की गई थी कि यदि लंबा उपवास जारी रहा तो वांगचुक के जीवन को गंभीर खतरा हो सकता है।
दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय ने भी अपने निर्देश में कहा था कि यदि उनकी जान बचाने के लिए किसी भी प्रकार की चिकित्सकीय सहायता आवश्यक हो तो उसे तत्काल उपलब्ध कराया जाए। अदालत ने स्पष्ट किया था कि प्रत्येक नागरिक का जीवन अमूल्य है।
पेशे से अभियंता रहे सोनम वांगचुक हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में जल संरक्षण, कृत्रिम हिमनद (आर्टिफिशियल ग्लेशियर) और टिकाऊ विकास के क्षेत्र में अपने अभिनव कार्यों के कारण अंतरराष्ट्रीय पहचान रखते हैं। पर्यावरण संरक्षण और शिक्षा सुधार से जुड़े उनके प्रयासों की देश-विदेश में सराहना होती रही है।
अस्पताल ले जाए जाने से कुछ घंटे पहले वांगचुक ने अपने संदेश में कहा था कि भारत में कई बड़े राजनीतिक परिवर्तन छोटे-छोटे जन आंदोलनों से शुरू हुए हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि उनका संघर्ष किसी व्यक्ति के खिलाफ नहीं, बल्कि देश की शिक्षा व्यवस्था को अधिक निष्पक्ष, पारदर्शी और भरोसेमंद बनाने के लिए है।
यह आंदोलन ऐसे समय में तेज हुआ है जब प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं की विश्वसनीयता पर गंभीर सवाल उठ रहे हैं। पिछले महीने कथित प्रश्नपत्र लीक के बाद 22 लाख से अधिक मेडिकल अभ्यर्थियों को दोबारा परीक्षा देनी पड़ी, जिससे पूरे देश में व्यापक नाराजगी फैल गई।
मेडिकल प्रवेश परीक्षा विवाद के अलावा अन्य परीक्षाओं की मूल्यांकन प्रक्रिया को लेकर उठे सवालों ने भी छात्रों के असंतोष को बढ़ाया है। विभिन्न राज्यों में छात्रों ने निष्पक्ष परीक्षा व्यवस्था, पारदर्शी मूल्यांकन और जवाबदेही की मांग को लेकर प्रदर्शन किए हैं।
वांगचुक के आंदोलन को शनिवार को वरिष्ठ समाजसेवी अन्ना हज़ारे का भी समर्थन मिला। उन्होंने केंद्र सरकार से अपील की कि टकराव का रास्ता छोड़कर वांगचुक से बातचीत की जाए और उनकी मांगों पर गंभीरता से विचार किया जाए।
हज़ारे ने कहा कि सरकार को स्पष्ट रूप से यह बताना चाहिए कि वह वांगचुक की मांगें स्वीकार करती है या नहीं, लेकिन लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था में संवाद से बचना उचित नहीं है। उनके अनुसार बातचीत ही किसी भी विवाद का सबसे प्रभावी समाधान है।
शनिवार को वांगचुक के आमरण अनशन का 21वां दिन था। स्वास्थ्य में गिरावट की खबरों के बावजूद उन्होंने पहले ही स्पष्ट कर दिया था कि जब तक उनकी मांगों पर सार्थक कार्रवाई नहीं होती, तब तक वह अपना उपवास समाप्त नहीं करेंगे।
अन्ना हज़ारे की यह अपील उनके वर्ष 2011 के ऐतिहासिक लोकपाल आंदोलन की याद भी ताजा कर गई, जब उनका अनशन देश के सबसे बड़े जन आंदोलनों में से एक बन गया था।
हालांकि दिल्ली पुलिस का दावा है कि अस्पताल में भर्ती कराने की कार्रवाई केवल स्वास्थ्य सुरक्षा के उद्देश्य से और न्यायालय के निर्देशों के अनुरूप की गई, लेकिन कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी के नेताओं ने इस दावे पर सवाल उठाए हैं।
सीजेपी नेता अभिजीत दिपके ने आरोप लगाया कि वांगचुक को उनकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध जबरन हटाया गया। कुछ छात्र प्रदर्शनकारियों ने यह भी दावा किया कि पुलिस ने प्रदर्शन समाप्त कराने के दौरान बल प्रयोग किया, हालांकि इन आरोपों पर पुलिस की ओर से कोई विस्तृत आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आई है।
प्रदर्शनकारियों का यह भी आरोप है कि मौके पर पहुंचे अधिकारियों ने पहले स्वयं को चिकित्सकीय दल का सदस्य बताया और बाद में स्वयंसेवकों को हटाकर वांगचुक को अस्पताल ले गए।
सीजेपी के मुख्य प्रवक्ता सौरव दास ने आरोप लगाया कि दिल्ली पुलिस ने उच्च न्यायालय के आदेशों की गलत व्याख्या की है।
उनके अनुसार न्यायालय ने केवल नियमित स्वास्थ्य निगरानी का निर्देश दिया था और चिकित्सकीय हस्तक्षेप तभी करने को कहा था जब स्वास्थ्य में गंभीर गिरावट आए।
दास का दावा है कि वांगचुक की स्वास्थ्य जांच उनकी मेडिकल टीम प्रतिदिन कई बार कर रही थी और पुलिस की कार्रवाई न्यायालय के निर्देशों की भावना के अनुरूप नहीं थी।
इन आरोपों पर दिल्ली पुलिस की ओर से अभी तक विस्तृत जवाब नहीं दिया गया है। वांगचुक के अस्पताल में भर्ती होने के बाद यह आंदोलन एक नए चरण में प्रवेश कर गया है।
अब परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार, छात्रों के भविष्य और लोकतांत्रिक विरोध के अधिकार को लेकर राष्ट्रीय बहस और तेज होने की संभावना है।
