Film Personalities Back Sonam Wangchuk Amid Hunger Strike, Calls for Fairness for Students;
As climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk continues his indefinite hunger strike over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, support from the Indian film industry has continued to grow.
Several prominent actors and musicians have expressed solidarity with his campaign, urging that concerns raised by protesting students be addressed through dialogue.
The latest to join the voices of support is actor Hrithik Roshan, who said Wangchuk’s message deeply resonated with him.
Choosing social media to express his views, Hrithik Roshan shared on his Instagram Stories a video of Wangchuk that had earlier been reposted by actor Lisa Ray.
In the video, Wangchuk questions the silence surrounding the alleged examination paper leaks and appeals to citizens to recognise the long-term consequences if the concerns of students are ignored.
During the video message, Wangchuk said that many young aspirants had devoted years of hard work to preparing for competitive examinations, and alleged that irregularities had shattered the dreams of deserving candidates.
He argued that if such issues remain unresolved, they could ultimately affect the quality of future professionals, including doctors and engineers, thereby impacting society as a whole.
Responding to the video, Hrithik Roshan wrote that Wangchuk’s words appeared meaningful to him and reflected the emotional trauma many students experience while preparing for highly competitive examinations.
The actor also recalled his experience of portraying a teacher in one of his films, saying the role had helped him better understand the psychological pressures faced by students.
Hrithik referred to his performance in Super 30, directed by Vikas Bahl, in which he portrayed renowned mathematician and educator Anand Kumar.
The film, inspired by Kumar’s real-life work with underprivileged students, explored the struggles and aspirations of young candidates preparing for competitive examinations.
Singer Vishal Dadlani also reacted to the developments through a video posted on social media.
Expressing anguish over reports that Wangchuk had been removed from the protest venue, Dadlani questioned the manner in which the situation was handled and appealed to citizens to raise their voices if they believed students’ concerns deserved attention.
He also said he wished he could personally support the activist.
Actor Prakash Raj voiced similar concerns on the social media platform X. Sharing a screenshot related to the protest, he criticised the government’s handling of the situation and alleged that removing Wangchuk from the protest site instead of engaging in dialogue reflected a reluctance to address the issues raised by students.
In a subsequent post, he continued his criticism using political commentary and hashtags, questioning the government’s approach.
Actor Sonakshi Sinha did not issue a personal statement on the controversy but shared on social media a video featuring a woman protester who spoke about the reported detention of Sonam Wangchuk, indicating her support for the ongoing movement.
Meanwhile, tensions reportedly escalated at the protest venue after Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) member Abhijeet Dipke alleged that police personnel forcibly removed him and initiated action against demonstrators.
Authorities have not publicly responded to these specific allegations.
A day earlier, Wangchuk had stated that he had lost nearly 20 per cent of his body weight since beginning his indefinite fast.
Despite concerns about his health, he said he had no intention of ending the hunger strike until the demands raised by the protesting students were addressed.
After completing 20 days of fasting, Wangchuk released another video message urging citizens across the country to participate in the CJP’s “Chalo Sansad” march scheduled for July 20.
Describing the proposed march as peaceful, he said its success would depend on widespread public participation and support for students seeking what they describe as transparency and accountability in the examination system.

ऋतिक रोशन ने अपने इंस्टाग्राम स्टोरीज़ पर अभिनेता लीसा रे द्वारा साझा की गई वांगचुक की एक वीडियो क्लिप दोबारा पोस्ट की। इस वीडियो में वांगचुक कथित परीक्षा प्रश्नपत्र लीक और अन्य अनियमितताओं पर लोगों की चुप्पी पर सवाल उठाते हुए देशवासियों से छात्रों के भविष्य के लिए आवाज उठाने की अपील करते दिखाई देते हैं।
अपने संदेश में वांगचुक ने कहा कि अनेक युवाओं ने वर्षों की मेहनत के बाद प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं की तैयारी की, लेकिन यदि परीक्षाओं की निष्पक्षता पर प्रश्नचिह्न लगते हैं तो इसका असर केवल उम्मीदवारों तक सीमित नहीं रहेगा।
उन्होंने कहा कि भविष्य में समाज को मिलने वाले डॉक्टर, इंजीनियर और अन्य पेशेवरों की गुणवत्ता भी इससे प्रभावित हो सकती है। उनके ये विचार उनके व्यक्तिगत आरोप और चिंताएं हैं।
वीडियो पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए ऋतिक रोशन ने लिखा कि वांगचुक की बातें उन्हें सच्चाई के काफी करीब लगीं। उन्होंने कहा कि एक शिक्षक की भूमिका निभाने के दौरान उन्हें यह समझने का अवसर मिला था कि प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं की तैयारी करने वाले विद्यार्थियों पर मानसिक और भावनात्मक दबाव कितना गहरा होता है।
ऋतिक का संकेत उनकी चर्चित फिल्म ‘सुपर 30’ की ओर था, जिसमें उन्होंने निर्देशक विकास बहल के निर्देशन में प्रसिद्ध गणितज्ञ और शिक्षाविद आनंद कुमार की भूमिका निभाई थी। यह फिल्म आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर छात्रों को प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं के लिए तैयार करने वाले आनंद कुमार के जीवन से प्रेरित थी।
गायक विशाल ददलानी ने भी सोशल मीडिया पर एक वीडियो साझा कर अपनी नाराजगी व्यक्त की। उन्होंने उन रिपोर्टों पर चिंता जताई जिनमें दावा किया गया कि वांगचुक को प्रदर्शन स्थल से हटाया गया।
ददलानी ने लोगों से छात्रों के मुद्दों पर जागरूक होने की अपील की और कहा कि यदि संभव होता तो वे स्वयं भी वहां पहुंचकर किसी न किसी रूप में सहयोग करते।
अभिनेता प्रकाश राज ने भी सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर अपनी प्रतिक्रिया दी। उन्होंने एक स्क्रीनशॉट साझा करते हुए सरकार की आलोचना की और आरोप लगाया कि छात्रों के साथ संवाद करने के बजाय विरोध प्रदर्शन को बाधित करना लोकतांत्रिक भावना के अनुरूप नहीं है।
बाद की एक पोस्ट में भी उन्होंने राजनीतिक टिप्पणी करते हुए सरकार पर सवाल उठाए।
अभिनेत्री सोनाक्षी सिन्हा ने इस घटनाक्रम पर कोई व्यक्तिगत टिप्पणी नहीं की, लेकिन उन्होंने एक महिला प्रदर्शनकारी का वीडियो साझा किया, जिसमें प्रदर्शनकारी ने सोनम वांगचुक को कथित रूप से हिरासत में लिए जाने का दावा किया था।
इसे आंदोलन के प्रति उनके समर्थन के संकेत के रूप में देखा गया।
इस बीच प्रदर्शन स्थल पर तनाव उस समय बढ़ गया जब कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) के सदस्य अभिजीत दिपके ने आरोप लगाया कि पुलिस ने उन्हें जबरन हटाया और प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई की।
इन आरोपों पर संबंधित अधिकारियों की ओर से तत्काल कोई आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया सामने नहीं आई।
इससे एक दिन पहले सोनम वांगचुक ने कहा था कि अनशन के दौरान उनका लगभग 20 प्रतिशत वजन कम हो चुका है।
इसके बावजूद उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया कि जब तक उनकी मांगों पर ठोस पहल नहीं होती, तब तक वह अपना अनिश्चितकालीन उपवास समाप्त नहीं करेंगे।
अनशन के 20 दिन पूरे होने पर वांगचुक ने एक और वीडियो संदेश जारी कर देशभर के लोगों से 20 जुलाई को प्रस्तावित सीजेपी के “चलो संसद” मार्च में शामिल होने की अपील की।
उन्होंने इसे पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण अभियान बताते हुए कहा कि इसकी सफलता इस बात पर निर्भर करेगी कि कितने नागरिक छात्रों की मांगों के समर्थन में आगे आते हैं और संसद तक पहुंचकर अपनी लोकतांत्रिक आवाज दर्ज कराते हैं।
