Fairford Airbase Security Scare Puts Possible Iran Link Under Scrutiny

LONDON: A security operation surrounding a US-operated military base in Britain has developed into a wider investigation into a possible foreign connection, after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said authorities had found “strong indications” pointing towards Iran.

The statement came days after five British men were detained close to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, following the discovery of three white vans in the vicinity of the airbase.

Although the vehicles triggered a major security response, investigators subsequently confirmed that they contained no explosive devices.

Instead, officers found petrol, leaving investigators with the task of determining why the vehicles were there, who was behind their presence and whether the material had any connection with a planned attack.

The five men, all London residents in their twenties, were arrested on Sunday as counter-terrorism officers responded to the incident.

They were subsequently released on bail while inquiries continued.

The arrests initially prompted a substantial emergency operation around the airbase.

Bomb-disposal specialists were deployed,d and precautionary measures were taken in the surrounding area as authorities assessed the threat posed by the vehicles.

London examines possible overseas involvement.

The investigation took a more sensitive turn after Burnham said British authorities had been examining information suggesting that Iran may have been involved.

The prime minister stressed that the inquiry was still under way and described it as a complex police investigation.

British agencies have also been sharing information with US officials, reflecting the American military presence at Fairford and the facility’s role in US operations.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier indicated that investigators believed a foreign state could be connected to the incident, without publicly identifying the country.

Burnham’s comments went further by specifically pointing to Iran as a possible link. However, no publicly released evidence has established that Tehran directed or supported the activity around the base.

Iran has rejected the allegation and denied involvement in the episode.
