Netanyahu Hails Indian Flydubai Captain After Mid-Air Attack Averted
Smit Machchhar wounded in cockpit confrontation as Flight FZ1073 plunges thousands of feet; passengers and crew help subdue co-pilot before emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
NEW DELHI/JERUSALEM: A routine Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight turned into a desperate fight for survival after an attack in the cockpit sent the aircraft into a steep descent, with Indian Captain Smit Machchhar managing to open the cockpit door despite being seriously injured and enabling passengers and crew to intervene.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Machchhar as a “true hero”, crediting the Indian pilot with helping prevent a catastrophe aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people.
Israeli officials said the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar and appeared to be attempting to bring down the aircraft. The precise motive, however, remains under investigation.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 was flying at about 33,000 feet when the emergency unfolded. Flight-tracking data indicated that it plunged to roughly 17,000 feet in about a minute.
Reuters reported that the aircraft lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the most dramatic phase of the incident.
Captain opens cockpit door despite injuries.
According to Israeli officials, Machchhar was left bleeding on the cockpit floor but managed to release the cockpit door.
That gave people inside the cabin an opportunity to enter, confront the attacker and help regain control of the situation.
Passengers and crew members eventually restrained the co-pilot.
Two additional Flydubai pilots who were travelling as passengers also became involved in the effort to bring the aircraft under control, after which the plane was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Flydubai has described the episode as an incident involving the crew and confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at Tabuk.
The airline said all passengers and crew were accounted for and that it was cooperating with authorities investigating the circumstances.
Indian pilot undergoes emergency surgery.
Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk after the emergency landing. Indian officials initially said he was receiving medical treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
A later update said he underwent emergency surgery in Saudi Arabia and was subsequently airlifted to Dubai for continued treatment.
His family travelled to Dubai, where Indian officials met them and assured them of government assistance.
The incident has triggered widespread praise for the captain in both India and Israel.
Netanyahu said Machchhar’s actions helped save the lives of everyone aboard, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the pilot’s courage in the face of grave danger.
Passengers describe moments of panic
The emergency did not end with the captain’s intervention. Passengers were confronted with a rapidly descending aircraft and a violent struggle at the front of the cabin.
Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun was among those who entered the cockpit area and helped during the effort to regain control. Other passengers also described joining the struggle to restrain the attacker and prevent the situation from becoming fatal.
One passenger said the aircraft appeared to drop sharply before stabilising, followed by further sudden movements. Others recalled praying and fearing that the plane was about to crash.
Hayun was later received by Netanyahu at Ben Gurion Airport. Photographs showed him still wearing the bloodstained shirt he had worn during the flight.
The co-pilot remains under investigation.
The co-pilot has not been publicly identified. Regional officials said the suspect was taken into custody by Saudi authorities after the aircraft landed.
Investigators from several countries are examining what happened and why. AP reported that Saudi, Israeli, Emirati, Omani, and US authorities were involved in efforts to establish the motive.
Officials are considering multiple possibilities, and no definitive explanation has yet been established.
Netanyahu has made allegations about possible Islamist indoctrination, but AP reported that his office did not provide details when asked how that assessment had been reached.
Netanyahu has also said it is too early to determine whether Iran had any involvement.
Israel tightens scrutiny of incoming pilots.
The extraordinary incident has also prompted Israel to reconsider security procedures surrounding foreign pilots operating flights into the country.
A spokesman for Netanyahu said Israel intends to establish the identities of pilots arriving on international flights and conduct additional security checks.
Flydubai has meanwhile suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation proceeds.
The airline’s initial statement said Flight FZ1073 had experienced an incident en route but landed safely in Tabuk, with everyone on board accounted for.
For the passengers, the ordeal ended only after the aircraft reached Saudi Arabia. A replacement Flydubai flight later carried them onward to Tel Aviv.
What began as an ordinary international flight had therefore become an extraordinary cockpit emergency — one in which an injured captain, fellow crew members and passengers collectively helped prevent a potentially devastating outcome.

दरवाजा खुलने के बाद यात्रियों और चालक दल के सदस्यों को अंदर पहुंचने का अवसर मिला। उन्होंने हमलावर को काबू करने की कोशिश शुरू की। विमान में मौजूद कुछ अन्य पायलटों ने भी संकट की स्थिति में मदद की।

मच्छर की बहादुरी पर भारत और इजरायल दोनों में व्यापक चर्चा हो रही है। नेतन्याहू ने उनके प्रयासों को विमान में सवार लोगों की जान बचाने से जोड़ा है। भारत के प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने भी गंभीर खतरे के बीच उनके साहस की सराहना की।
यात्रियों ने सुनाई खौफनाक कहानी
विमान में मौजूद यात्रियों के लिए यह कुछ मिनट बेहद भयावह थे। विमान अचानक तेजी से नीचे आने लगा और उसी दौरान कॉकपिट में संघर्ष चल रहा था।
इजरायली यात्री यानिव हायून उन लोगों में शामिल थे, जिन्होंने कॉकपिट में पहुंचकर स्थिति संभालने में मदद की। अन्य यात्रियों ने भी हमलावर को पकड़ने और विमान को सुरक्षित रखने के प्रयास में सहयोग किया।

हायून से बाद में प्रधानमंत्री नेतन्याहू ने बेन गुरियन हवाई अड्डे पर मुलाकात की। मुलाकात के दौरान वह वही खून से सनी शर्ट पहने हुए थे, जो उन्होंने उड़ान के दौरान पहनी थी।
सह-पायलट से पूछताछ, मकसद अब भी स्पष्ट नहीं
हमले के आरोपी सह-पायलट की पहचान सार्वजनिक नहीं की गई है। विमान के तबूक में उतरने के बाद उसे सऊदी अधिकारियों ने हिरासत में ले लिया।
घटना की जांच में कई देशों की एजेंसियां शामिल हैं। एसोसिएटेड प्रेस के अनुसार, सऊदी अरब, इजरायल, संयुक्त अरब अमीरात, ओमान और अमेरिका से जुड़े अधिकारी घटना के कारणों का पता लगाने में जुटे हैं। जांचकर्ता फिलहाल विभिन्न संभावनाओं पर विचार कर रहे हैं और हमले के पीछे का कोई अंतिम कारण सामने नहीं आया है।
प्रधानमंत्री नेतन्याहू ने हमलावर के संभावित इस्लामी कट्टरपंथी विचारधारा से प्रभावित होने की बात कही है, लेकिन एपी के अनुसार उनके कार्यालय ने इस दावे के आधार के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी नहीं दी। नेतन्याहू ने यह भी कहा है कि ईरान की किसी भूमिका के बारे में अभी निष्कर्ष निकालना जल्दबाजी होगी।
इजरायल में विदेशी पायलटों की सुरक्षा जांच बढ़ेगी
इस घटना के बाद इजरायल ने देश में आने वाली अंतरराष्ट्रीय उड़ानों के पायलटों की सुरक्षा जांच को और कड़ा करने की तैयारी शुरू कर दी है।
प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय के प्रवक्ता के मुताबिक, इजरायल आने वाले पायलटों की पहचान की पुष्टि करने और उनके बारे में अतिरिक्त सुरक्षा जांच करने की व्यवस्था पर काम किया जाएगा।
उधर, फ्लाईदुबई ने जांच पूरी होने तक इजरायल के लिए और इजरायल से अपनी उड़ानें निलंबित कर दी हैं। एयरलाइन ने कहा है कि वह संबंधित अधिकारियों के साथ सहयोग कर रही है।
तबूक में विमान की आपात लैंडिंग के बाद यात्रियों को वैकल्पिक फ्लाईदुबई उड़ान के जरिए तेल अवीव पहुंचाया गया।
एक सामान्य अंतरराष्ट्रीय उड़ान के रूप में शुरू हुई यह यात्रा कुछ ही मिनटों में जिंदगी और मौत के संघर्ष में बदल गई।
