NEW DELHI: A routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv descended into a terrifying mid-air emergency on Wednesday when a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit, leaving the captain injured and sending the Boeing 737 MAX into a dramatic loss of altitude.
Flight FZ1073 ultimately landed safely at Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia after passengers and crew members intervened during the crisis.
Israeli officials said the co-pilot was suspected of attacking the captain and attempting to take control of the aircraft. Saudi authorities subsequently detained the co-pilot.
The incident triggered an international security alert after the aircraft transmitted emergency signals associated first with a general aviation emergency and subsequently with unlawful interference.
Aircraft plunges more than 14,000 feet.
The severity of the emergency became apparent from flight-tracking data.
The aircraft was cruising at about 34,000 feet when it suddenly lost roughly 14,000 feet in less than a minute, according to flight-tracking information cited by Reuters.
The aircraft subsequently struggled to maintain a stable altitude before being diverted toward Tabuk.
The flight transmitted the internationally recognised 7700 emergency squawk and later the 7500 code, which indicates hijacking or unlawful interference.
The latter alert prompted Israeli authorities to scramble fighter aircraft toward the passenger jet.
The aircraft eventually returned to the general emergency code as it approached Tabuk, where it landed safely.
The captain reportedly attacked inside the cockpit.
The captain has been identified in Indian media reports as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and experienced Flydubai pilot.
Machchhar reportedly joined Flydubai in 2022 after spending about 11 years with SpiceJet. His professional profile indicates extensive experience on Boeing 737 aircraft, including the 737-800 and 737 MAX 8.
According to accounts cited by Reuters and Israeli media, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with a knife during the flight.
The ensuing struggle apparently affected the aircraft’s control and was followed by the sudden descent.
The exact sequence inside the cockpit is still being investigated.

What happened next prevented the situation from becoming potentially catastrophic.
Accounts from passengers indicate that people on board, assisted by cabin crew and other pilots travelling on the aircraft, moved toward the cockpit after the confrontation.
They managed to restrain the alleged attacker and help restore control of the aircraft.
Reuters reported that the injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door before collapsing, allowing people outside the flight deck to intervene.
A reserve crew member or other qualified pilots aboard the aircraft subsequently helped operate the plane.
The aircraft was then directed toward Tabuk.
Emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
The Boeing 737 MAX landed at Tabuk Airport roughly an hour after the emergency began.
Both pilots were taken for medical treatment. The co-pilot was detained by Saudi authorities, according to reports.
No passenger deaths were reported, and passengers were subsequently provided assistance while arrangements were made for their onward journey.
The aircraft itself appeared to have suffered damage around its rear section. Images published after the landing showed apparent damage to the rudder area, although the precise cause of that damage remains under investigation.
Israel was placed on high alert.
The incident immediately triggered a security response in Israel because the aircraft was carrying a large number of Israeli passengers and was headed for Tel Aviv.
Israeli fighter aircraft were scrambled after the 7500 unlawful-interference signal was received.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Israeli security officials were briefed as the aircraft diverted toward Saudi Arabia.
Netanyahu later said the co-pilot had attempted to crash the aircraft after attacking the captain.
Israeli officials have described the episode as a potentially serious security incident.
However, the motive has not yet been conclusively established. Reuters reported that Israeli authorities were examining the possibility of a terrorist attack, while other possibilities were also being considered.
Flydubai has urged caution while the investigation continues.
Who is Smit Machchhar?

Machchhar is reported to have served with SpiceJet before moving to Flydubai. According to his professional profile, he has accumulated thousands of hours flying Boeing 737 aircraft and served as a training captain during his earlier career.
His experience is particularly relevant because the aircraft had to be stabilised and brought safely to the ground following the cockpit confrontation.
Investigation to focus on cockpit security
The incident is expected to trigger detailed examination of cockpit procedures, crew behaviour, aircraft-control inputs and the events that preceded the sudden descent.
Investigators will have access to cockpit voice recordings, flight-data information, communications, CCTV or other available evidence and statements from passengers and crew.
Among the questions likely to be examined are how the confrontation began, how control of the aircraft was affected, how the cockpit door was opened, and how passengers and other crew members were able to restrain the co-pilot.
