Flydubai FZ1073 Crisis: How Four Passengers Helped Rescue a Plunging Aircraft

Indian Captain Smit Machchhar, four Israeli passengers and other crew members helped turn a terrifying cockpit emergency into a safe landing in Saudi Arabia.

NEW DELHI: A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a fight for survival on September 30 when a violent confrontation in the cockpit sent a Flydubai aircraft into a sudden and dangerous descent.

At the centre of the emergency was Indian Captain Smit Machchhar, who was seriously injured during an alleged attack by the flight’s Omani co-pilot.

Despite his wounds, Machchhar managed to make the cockpit accessible to people outside, creating an opportunity for passengers and other pilots aboard the aircraft to intervene.

What followed was an extraordinary sequence in which ordinary passengers moved towards the source of the danger rather than away from it.

Four Israeli passengers—Yaniv Hayun, Zvika Manes, Assaf Rajuan and dentist Dr Shota Musaev—played different roles in restraining the alleged attacker, helping stabilise the aircraft and treating the injured captain.

The Boeing 737 operating Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

The incident is being investigated by authorities, with the circumstances and motive yet to be conclusively established.

The moment passengers realised something was seriously wrong

Passengers initially had little idea of what was happening in the cockpit.

The aircraft was travelling from Dubai towards Tel Aviv when the situation suddenly deteriorated. Reports and flight-tracking data indicated a dramatic loss of altitude during the emergency, while emergency signals were transmitted from the aircraft.

Inside the cabin, passengers heard screams and began to realise that the problem was not an ordinary technical malfunction.

Among those who moved towards the cockpit were several Israeli passengers who would soon find themselves playing an unexpected role in the survival of everyone aboard.

Yaniv Hayun enters the cockpit.

Yaniv Hayun, a plumber travelling with his family, was one of the passengers who moved towards the cockpit.

Hayun later said he believed the door had become accessible because Machchhar, despite being badly injured, had managed to release it before collapsing.

Inside, Hayun encountered the co-pilot and intervened physically. He and other passengers restrained the man and prevented him from continuing his actions inside the flight deck.

Hayun then found himself facing another problem: the aircraft still needed to be stabilised.

He said his familiarity with the television programme Air Crash Investigation gave him some basic understanding of what might need to be done. He moved towards the controls and helped bring the aircraft out of its dangerous descent until another pilot travelling as a passenger could take over.

The aircraft was subsequently flown by other qualified pilots who were aboard the flight and ultimately brought it safely to Tabuk.

Zvika Manes helps restrain the attacker.

Zvika Manes, an executive associated with Bank Leumi’s underwriting business, was another passenger who responded to the emergency.

Manes described a cabin filled with confusion and panic as the aircraft descended rapidly. He joined the group that entered the cockpit and helped overpower the co-pilot.

With the alleged attacker continuing to struggle, passengers used available cables, including wires from airline headphones, to restrain him.

Manes said the physical struggle continued for some time before the man was finally subdued. His account illustrates how passengers had to improvise with whatever was immediately available to prevent another attempt to interfere with the aircraft.

Assaf Rajuan recalls a cabin in panic

Assaf Rajuan, an insurance executive and tennis enthusiast, was also among those who moved towards the cockpit.

Rajuan recalled hearing screams before passengers realised that something was badly wrong with the aircraft. The sudden descent created a sense that the plane was no longer under normal control.

When the cockpit became accessible, Rajuan joined others in confronting the alleged attacker.

The passengers then worked with members of the crew to keep him restrained while the aircraft was redirected towards Saudi Arabia.

For Rajuan, the experience was difficult to comprehend. He had been on holiday in Thailand only hours earlier and suddenly found himself involved in an emergency in which the survival of everyone aboard appeared uncertain.

He later said the passengers acted largely on instinct, driven by the desire to protect their families, fellow travellers and the crew.

Dr Shota Musaev turns from restraint to emergency medicine

Dr Shota Musaev, a dentist travelling on the flight, initially rushed towards the cockpit after hearing the disturbance.

His first concern was to help subdue the attacker. Once the situation was brought under control, his medical training became critical.

Machchhar had suffered serious stab wounds and was bleeding heavily. Musaev attended to the injured captain inside the aircraft and worked to control the bleeding while the plane headed towards an emergency landing.

He later said Machchhar remained conscious enough to communicate during part of the ordeal.

Musaev also described the urgency of the situation, saying that there was little time to think and that passengers simply responded to what they saw happening around them.

Saudi medical personnel took over the captain’s treatment after the aircraft reached Tabuk. Machchhar was subsequently transferred to Abu Dhabi for further care and has been reported to be in stable condition.

The captain’s final intervention may have proved decisive

While the passengers’ actions attracted international attention, the sequence could not have unfolded in the same way without Machchhar’s own response.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, the Indian captain reportedly managed to release the cockpit door. That allowed passengers to enter the flight deck and confront the co-pilot.

The aircraft was then stabilised with the assistance of other qualified pilots who were travelling aboard the flight.

In effect, several separate interventions came together: Machchhar created access to the cockpit; passengers confronted and restrained the alleged attacker; Hayun helped with the aircraft controls during the critical phase; Musaev treated the injured captain; and other pilots eventually assumed responsibility for flying the aircraft.

Safe landing ends a terrifying flight.

After the crisis was brought under control, the aircraft diverted to Tabuk rather than continuing to Tel Aviv.

The landing ended a sequence that had begun with a violent cockpit confrontation and a rapid descent. The passengers were later taken onward to Israel on a replacement aircraft.

The incident has since prompted investigations into the conduct of the co-pilot, the circumstances surrounding the attack and the possible motive.

The UAE’s attorney general has ordered an investigation covering the circumstances and motives of the incident, including whether it had any connection to terrorist activity or prior planning.

The authorities have not yet established a final explanation.

Israeli President honours passengers

The actions of the passengers have drawn recognition from Israeli leaders.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the Presidential Medal for Civilian Bravery for Yaniv Hayun, Zvika Manes, Assaf Rajuan and Dr Shota Musaev.

Other people aboard the aircraft, including those who alerted passengers to the disturbance and the pilots who subsequently helped complete the flight, were also acknowledged for their roles.

Captain Machchhar has separately received praise from Indian and Israeli leaders for his actions during the emergency.

What makes the episode particularly striking is that no single passenger performed every task.

The response was collective and improvised: one person confronted the attacker, another helped with the aircraft, another provided medical assistance, while trained pilots eventually took over the flight.

The investigation will determine precisely how the cockpit confrontation unfolded.

But the accounts emerging from the aircraft already provide a remarkable picture of passengers and crew responding within minutes to an emergency that threatened to turn an international flight into a disaster.
