France Tightens Security After Protests as Trump Sparks Immigration Row With Macron

Local restrictions in Paris and other French cities follow a wave of unrest over economic pressures and public services, while the US president’s remarks about immigration add a diplomatic dimension to the crisis.

PARIS: French authorities are stepping up security in parts of the country after demonstrations over economic hardship and public services escalated into violence, prompting local curfews and restrictions on public gatherings.

The unrest has also triggered a political controversy after US President Donald Trump used the situation to criticise France’s immigration policies and call for tougher border enforcement.

The French government has opted for targeted restrictions rather than immediately imposing a blanket curfew across Paris.

Meanwhile, Trump has placed pressure on President Emmanuel Macron, arguing that immigration is at the heart of the disorder — a claim that has not been established as the cause of the protests.

Paris adopts targeted measures to prevent fresh violence

Police in the French capital announced overnight restrictions covering two central locations, Place de la République and Les Halles.

The measures were scheduled to run from 11 pm on Monday, October 19, until 6 am the following morning. Authorities also planned to prohibit public gatherings from 8 pm.

The restrictions followed disturbances during demonstrations on Saturday, October 17, when reports of clashes, property damage and looting raised concerns about further disorder.

Other urban centres have also responded to the situation. Authorities in Lille, Nice and Lyon introduced local restrictions or curfews as they sought to prevent demonstrations from turning into further confrontations.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has defended the decision to concentrate restrictions on specific locations instead of extending a night-time curfew across the entire capital.

He has also kept the possibility of declaring a state of emergency open if the security situation deteriorates.

Cost-of-living anger forms the backdrop

The demonstrations have unfolded amid frustration over household expenses, fuel prices and concerns about the functioning of public services, including education.

What began as protests over these grievances spread to several cities, with some gatherings turning violent.

The authorities now face the task of restoring order without allowing the response to deepen public dissatisfaction.

The government’s decision to impose geographically limited restrictions reflects an effort to contain disturbances while retaining the option of stronger measures if necessary.

The scale of the unrest has also attracted attention beyond France, particularly after Trump publicly offered his interpretation of the events.

Trump turns French unrest into an immigration debate

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump rejected explanations based on dissatisfaction with schools or other public services and instead attributed the turmoil to immigration.

He said he had urged Macron years earlier to restrict arrivals into France, arguing that the country had taken the wrong approach by allowing large numbers of people to enter.

Trump went further by predicting that Paris could become a “Muslim city very soon”.

He also warned European governments that failing to strengthen border controls and remove people he characterised as criminals would have severe consequences for the continent.

The comments followed a Sunday post on Trump’s Truth Social platform in which he portrayed France as being in crisis and advocated tighter immigration restrictions.

His intervention has placed immigration at the centre of the political discussion surrounding the unrest.

However, his assertions should be distinguished from the reported reasons behind the demonstrations, which include economic pressures and dissatisfaction with public services.

Macron faces criticism as French government weighs its response

Trump’s remarks amount to a public challenge to France’s approach to border management at a time when the French administration is already dealing with pressure to contain street violence.

The immediate priority for French officials remains public safety and preventing further incidents.

Lecornu’s position suggests that the government prefers to respond through local security measures for now, while retaining broader emergency powers should the circumstances demand them.

The developments leave France confronting two connected but distinct questions: how to address the grievances driving the demonstrations and how to restore public order without further inflaming tensions.

Trump’s intervention has added another layer to that challenge, turning a domestic crisis into a wider argument over immigration, border security and Europe’s political direction.
