Jagat Taran Girls’ Degree College: 50 Years of Excellence, Pride, and Promise
BK Singh
Jagat Taran Girls’ Degree College (JTGDC), one of the most distinguished constituent colleges of the University of Allahabad, has emerged as the pride of Prayagraj and the region.
Founded in September 1975, the college has stood as a radiant beacon of women’s empowerment through education for five glorious decades.
The college’s journey to excellence has been shaped not only by its committed management committees and visionary leadership but also by its tireless faculty members, whose dedication has left an indelible mark.
Their contributions, along with the vibrant student community, have positioned JTGDC as the best degree college of the city and the entire region—a recognition that resonates with pride.
This transformation gained momentum when the University of Allahabad became a Central University, a milestone made possible through the relentless efforts of BJP stalwart and academic visionary Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, who himself served as a respected teacher at Allahabad University.
His vision for higher education and his role in strengthening the university’s status paved the way for Jagat Taran Girls’ College to become a constituent institution, further elevating its stature and scope.
Golden Jubilee: A Celebration of Legacy and Service
As the institution celebrates its Golden Jubilee Year (1975–2025), it honors fifty years of academic brilliance, cultural vibrancy, and community service.
The celebrations began on the 49th Foundation Day with the inauguration of a Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with Allahabad Blood Bank, Beli Hospital.
Former Mayor of Prayagraj, Mrs. Abhilasha Gupta Nandi, inaugurated the event, praising the college for instilling in its students the philosophy of “Rakt Daan, Maha Daan”—the belief that blood donation is the greatest form of charity.
On the same day, the much-awaited Common Room for girl students was inaugurated, creating a cherished space for camaraderie and creativity. The initiative was guided by Dr. Kasturi Bhardwaj, Dr. Ankita Chaturvedi (NSS Coordinator), and Dr. Namrata Deb (NCC Coordinator).
Competitions on blood donation awareness, a Mehndi Making competition with Sanskrit greetings, and a poster contest on “India @ 2047” set the tone for an engaging year of academic and cultural festivities.
The spirit of celebration continued with a historic program organized by the Department of Music in collaboration with SPICMACAY, featuring renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Vidushi Kalapini Komkali of the Gwalior Gharana.
A four-day Golden Jubilee Sports Event showcased athletic spirit, while the college NSS team earned recognition from the Ministry of Culture for their spirited participation in the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan. A special tree plantation drive was also organized on Guru Purnima as a tribute to the Golden Jubilee Year.
September 2025: The Grand Culmination
The final month of the Golden Jubilee celebrations was nothing short of magnificent. It began on 4th September with a mesmerizing Santoor recital by Pandit Abhay Rustom Sopori, organized by SPICMACAY in collaboration with the Department of Music.
A Golden Jubilee Picnic on 6th September united faculty and staff in a spirit of family and joy.
Carrying forward its civic mission, the NCC Unit organized a Driving License and Road Safety Awareness Camp on 9th September in collaboration with RTO Prayagraj and Amar Ujala, directly impacting the lives of students and the community.
The month also celebrated Hindi Maah, with literary and cultural events honoring India’s linguistic heritage.
To mark this milestone, the college is releasing a Golden Jubilee Commemorative Souvenir alongside its prestigious research journal, “The Banyan Tree.” On its 50th Foundation Day, the college will honor its former Principals, revered teachers, dedicated staff, and illustrious alumni achievers in a Grand Felicitation Ceremony, followed by a cultural extravaganza showcasing the immense talent of its students.
Poised for the Future
Today, under the leadership of Prof. Ashima Ghosh (Principal) and Prof. Ashim Kumar Mukherjee (Chairperson, Governing Body), Jagat Taran Girls’ Degree College not only celebrates its glorious past but also embraces the promise of a radiant future.
Standing at the threshold of a new era, JTGDC remains resolute in its mission: to illuminate minds, nurture talent, and empower generations of women who will shape tomorrow.
Jagat Taran Girls’ Degree College is not just an institution—it is a legacy of pride, promise, and purpose.
