Hamirpur Boat Tragedy: Two Dead, Four Missing After Boat Capsizes in Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh

A tragic boat accident in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur has claimed the lives of two people, including a child, while four others remain missing after a boat overturned on Wednesday evening.

According to police officials, the incident took place near Kutubpur Patiya hamlet in the Kurara area when several villagers were returning from a river island after purchasing cucumbers and muskmelons.

The boat reportedly lost balance and capsized at around 7 pm.

Officials said nine people were on board at the time of the accident.

The boatman, identified as Dheeru, managed to rescue three people — Vishnu, Rinku, and Parul — shortly after the boat overturned. However, six others, including children and a woman, went missing in the river currents.

The missing persons were identified as Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brijrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Mahesh (6), and Aditya (11).

On Thursday, rescue teams recovered the bodies of Akanksha and Brijrani from the river, while efforts continued to trace the remaining four missing children.

District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal said teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were carrying out intensive search operations in the area.

Rajesh Yash, DIG of Banda Division, said villagers frequently use boats to cross the river on a daily basis.

He said authorities received information about the accident around 8.30 pm, following which police, SDRF personnel, el and flood relief teams rushed to the spot.

He stated that while three people managed to swim to safety, six passengers — including one woman and five children between the ages of 5 and 15 years — had gone missing in the river.

Senior district officials, police personnel, nel, and rescue teams remained at the site through the night as search operations continued.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Hamirpur Manoj Prajapati said compensation would be provided to the affected families according to government rules.

He added that a detailed report regarding the incident would also be sent to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
