Imran Khan Faces October 28 Exit Deadline After CJP Protest in Mumbai
MUMBAI: Actor Imran Khan’s participation in a political demonstration in Mumbai has triggered an immigration controversy, with reports stating that the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) has directed him to leave India by October 28.
The development follows a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned the actor’s involvement in an agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in view of his reported American citizenship.
Khan holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card and lives in Mumbai’s Khar neighbourhood, according to information provided by a police official.
The notice reportedly relates to Khan’s appearance at a protest held at August Kranti Maidan on October 10.
The gathering, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), targeted the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Protesters called for Kumar’s resignation, alleging irregularities in the exercise.
Somaiya had asked the Mumbai Police to establish the actor’s citizenship status and examine his participation in the demonstration.
Citing a report by the Press Trust of India, he claimed that Khan was born and educated in the United States but had built his livelihood in India while taking part in political activities opposing the government.
The BJP leader said he had requested details about the period of Khan’s American citizenship and welcomed the reported action by immigration officials.
The FRRO operates under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs through the Bureau of Immigration. Its remit covers various aspects of foreign nationals’ stay in India, including registration, movement, departure and visa-related matters.
Actor Questions Restrictions on Public Protest
Khan’s own explanation for attending the October 10 gathering was different from the political questions subsequently raised about his presence.
In a video circulated on social media, he said he had not gone to the venue to press a specific demand.
Instead, he said, his concern was with restrictions on people’s movement and their ability to make their voices heard.
He described himself as someone who lived in Mumbai and wanted to understand why such restrictions were being imposed.
His comments came amid a protest that drew hundreds of participants and resulted in mass detentions.
Lekha Washington and Family Members Among Those Detained
Khan was reportedly detained along with around 400 other people during the demonstration. His girlfriend, Lekha Washington, his mother, Nusrat, and his niece, Zayn (Marie), were also named among those taken into custody.
The incident subsequently prompted a separate allegation of police misconduct.
In a video shared after the detention, Zayn claimed that police personnel had manhandled and assaulted her. She displayed bruises that she said resulted from the incident.
The claims about her treatment have not been independently established in the information available for this report.
The reported FRRO notice has added an immigration dimension to an already contentious protest over electoral-roll revision.
