IPL Betting Losses Left Accused Buried in Debt; Brother Was Financially Supporting Him, Say Police

By BK Singh

Police investigations have revealed that the accused, Sunny Gupta, has suffered substantial financial losses while betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches over the past year.

According to investigators, he lost several lakhs of rupees through gambling activities, leaving him trapped under mounting debts.

Family members reportedly told police that the financial strain had become so severe that his brother had been providing monetary assistance and helping him manage his liabilities.

Officials said that if required, a detailed statement regarding these financial transactions could also be recorded from the accused while he remains in judicial custody.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that Sunny had developed a habit of wagering large sums of money on cricket matches and online gaming platforms.

Driven by the prospect of quick profits, he allegedly continued placing increasingly high bets. However, repeated losses eroded his finances, gradually pushing him into a cycle of borrowing and debt.

Investigators further stated that Sunny was not the only one involved in betting activities. Abhishek, too, was reportedly known to stake money on almost every major match.

While occasional wins did occur, the losses far outweighed any gains. As a result, both men faced growing financial difficulties and increasingly relied on borrowed money to sustain their gambling habits.

According to police sources, the heavy losses running into lakhs of rupees created an urgent need for cash. Money had allegedly been borrowed from various individuals and betting operators, and creditors were continuously demanding repayment.

The pressure of clearing these debts, combined with the lack of available funds, is believed to have placed both men under considerable financial and psychological stress.

The investigation has also indicated that family members were aware of the accused’s betting activities and the financial troubles arising from them.

Consequently, they were reportedly cautious about extending financial support, knowing that the money could be used to continue gambling.

Police are now closely examining the monetary trail and scrutinising all possible links connected to the betting network as part of the ongoing probe.
