According to CNN and The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, Israel has shared intelligence with Washington claiming that Iran recently formulated a new alleged plan to assassinate US President Donald Trump.
The reported intelligence has surfaced at a time when diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme continues, even as strategic mistrust between the two countries remains high.
US agencies are reportedly examining the information
According to CNN, the intelligence warning was conveyed earlier this week. The report said US agencies had already been tracking possible threats against Trump in recent weeks, but the information provided by Israel reportedly referred to a more specific alleged assassination plan.
However, the reports also noted that American intelligence agencies have not publicly confirmed the existence of any active or imminent plot against the US President.
Long-standing tensions linked to Soleimani’s killing
Relations between Tehran and Trump have remained strained since the January 2020 US drone strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force.
Iranian leaders have repeatedly vowed to retaliate over Soleimani’s killing, making the issue a continuing source of friction between the two countries.
No official response from Israel or Iran
The Israeli Embassy in Washington declined to comment on the media reports when approached.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to requests seeking its reaction to the allegations.
Trump says he remains a target for Iran
Speaking to reporters during the NATO Summit, Trump claimed that Iran continued to view him as a primary target.
He said he believed his name appeared on Iranian assassination lists and described Iran’s leadership in harsh terms, adding that he had so far been fortunate but warned that such threats could not be ignored.
Trump also claimed he had recently learned about a new list in which he was allegedly identified as Iran’s top assassination target.
However, it remains unclear whether he was referring to the intelligence reportedly supplied by Israel or to information obtained through another source.
US intelligence has yet to verify the alleged assassination plan
CNN reported that US intelligence agencies continue to monitor potential threats linked to Iran but have not independently verified the existence of an operational assassination conspiracy.
One source quoted in the report suggested that some American officials believe the Israeli intelligence could also be part of a broader effort to shape the Trump administration’s policy towards Iran.
Anti-Trump slogans reportedly raised during funeral gathering
The reports also stated that crowds attending the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei allegedly chanted slogans calling for the death of Donald Trump.
Those slogans have further intensified concerns over the already volatile relationship between Washington and Tehran.
Nuclear negotiations continue despite political tensions
Despite escalating rhetoric and mutual accusations, diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear programme are reportedly continuing.
According to the report, officials from both countries are working towards reaching a possible nuclear agreement by mid-August, even though Trump had earlier stated that the previous memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran was no longer in effect.
