Leaders Across Political Spectrum Unite to Mourn Dr. Manmohan Singh
The passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has brought together leaders across political divides in a shared moment of grief and reverence.
A towering figure in India’s political and economic history, Singh’s legacy transcends party lines, as reflected in the heartfelt tributes from both allies and critics.
Even those who often opposed Singh’s policies acknowledged his profound contributions to the nation, praising his humility, intellect, and pivotal role in shaping modern India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dr. Singh’s residence, calling his demise a “great loss to the nation.” Reflecting on Singh’s journey, Modi stated, “His dedication to the people and the nation’s progress will always be honored.”
In a video message, Modi reminisced about Singh’s life after Partition and his enduring contributions. “As Prime Minister, his efforts in advancing India’s development will forever be remembered,” he said, recognizing Singh as a true nation-builder.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted Singh’s vital role in India’s governance. “From his tenure as RBI Governor to his service as Finance Minister and Prime Minister, Dr. Singh was instrumental in shaping India’s governance,” Shah remarked on X.
Expressing his condolences, Shah added, “May Waheguru grant peace to his soul and provide strength to his family in this time of loss.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lauded Singh for his dual legacy as an economic reformer and foreign policy visionary. “Widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms, he also steered strategic shifts in foreign policy,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Recalling his time with Singh, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the former Prime Minister’s “kindness and courtesy,” calling it an honor to have worked with him.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hailed Singh’s landmark 1991 budget as a transformative moment for the Indian economy. “He was universally respected, gentle, and soft-spoken,” she said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma admired Singh’s humility and intellect. “Dr. Sahab epitomized humility and remained untainted by the allure of power,” Sarma wrote, echoing the sentiments of many who knew him.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised Singh for his pivotal role in shaping India’s economic policies. “His efforts to give the Indian economy a new direction were remarkable,” Dhami noted.
RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat and General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed collective grief. “Renowned economist Dr. Singh’s contributions to Bharat will always be cherished,” they said in a statement, offering prayers for his soul.
Other leaders, including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, echoed similar sentiments, commending Singh’s leadership and vision.
Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare also condoled Singh’s death, emphasizing his dedication to the nation. “Dr. Singh always prioritized the welfare of the country and its people,” Hazare said.
Reflecting on Singh’s legacy, Hazare remarked, “While every life comes to an end, some leave a lasting impact. Singh gave India a new economic direction and was steadfast against corruption, taking decisive steps on the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act.”
