Madhubala: The ‘Mona Lisa of Bollywood’ Whose Beauty Couldn’t Save Her from a Tragic End

Madhubala, often hailed as the most beautiful actress ever to grace Indian cinema, was frequently compared to the Mona Lisa — the timeless masterpiece that represents the epitome of beauty on canvas.

Just as Leonardo da Vinci’s painting is celebrated as the most captivating woman ever painted, Madhubala’s ethereal charm, flawless features, and magnetic screen presence earned her the title of the ‘Mona Lisa of Bollywood.’

Her beauty was so legendary that fans and critics alike believed no actress before or after could match her divine allure.

Yet, despite being cinema’s most cherished face, Madhubala’s life was far from the fairy tale her beauty suggested.

She spent her final years in loneliness and isolation, a far cry from the adulation she received at the peak of her career.

The actress, who passed away at just 36 on February 23, 1969, had been bedridden for nearly nine years before her death.

Her troubles began during the filming of ‘Naya Daur’ in the mid-1950s. Madhubala had shot for about ten days when her father, Ataullah Khan, refused to allow her to continue, citing concerns about her health and the extensive outdoor shooting required for the film.

When director B.R. Chopra insisted on sticking to the original schedule, her father filed a lawsuit against the filmmaker.

The situation was further complicated by Madhubala’s relationship with her co-star Dilip Kumar, who testified against her father during the legal proceedings.

The court ultimately ruled in Chopra’s favour, and Madhubala was replaced by Vyjayanthimala. While the actress later privately apologised to Chopra, the damage to her relationship with Dilip Kumar was irreparable.

In 1960, Madhubala married singer-actor Kishore Kumar. According to her sister Madhur Bhushan, the marriage was born more out of stubbornness and anger towards Dilip Kumar than out of love.

At the time, Madhubala was planning to travel to London for treatment of a ventricular septal defect — a hole in her heart that had plagued her since childhood.

Shortly after their marriage, Kishore Kumar took her to London, where doctors gave a devastating prognosis: she had only two years to live.

Upon returning to India, her husband distanced himself from her. He bought her a house on Carter Road in Mumbai and left her there with only a nurse and a driver for company.

He would visit once every few months and often disconnected his phone, refusing to take her calls.

The isolation took a heavy toll. The woman who had once been compared to the Mona Lisa, whose face had adorned countless magazine covers and inspired millions, found herself abandoned and alone.

She spent her last years confined to bed, reduced to “just bones and skin,” as her sister recalled, often crying and begging to live.

Even in her final days, the memory of Dilip Kumar lingered. Her sister revealed that Madhubala never forgot him.

When she was hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital, Dilip Kumar visited her and promised they would work together again.

However, after his marriage to Saira Banu, they never met. He and his family arrived at the graveyard after her death, but the burial had already been completed.

मधुबाला, जिन्हें भारतीय सिनेमा की सबसे खूबसूरत अभिनेत्री माना जाता है, की तुलना अक्सर मोना लिसा से की जाती थी — वह अमर कलाकृति जो कैनवस पर सबसे खूबसूरत महिला का प्रतीक है।

जिस तरह लियोनार्डो दा विंची की यह पेंटिंग अब तक की सबसे आकर्षक महिला के रूप में जानी जाती है, उसी तरह मधुबाला की अलौकिक सुंदरता, निर्दोष विशेषताओं और चुंबकीय स्क्रीन उपस्थिति ने उन्हें ‘बॉलीवुड की मोना लिसा’ का दर्जा दिलाया।

उनकी खूबसूरती इतनी विख्यात थी कि प्रशंसकों और आलोचकों का मानना था कि उनसे पहले या बाद में कोई अभिनेत्री उनके दिव्य आकर्षण की बराबरी नहीं कर सकती।

लेकिन सिनेमा के सबसे चहेते चेहरे होने के बावजूद, मधुबाला का जीवन उनकी खूबसूरती जैसी परीकथा नहीं था।

उन्होंने अपने आखिरी साल अकेलेपन और एकांत में बिताए, जो उन्हें अपने करियर के चरम पर मिली प्रशंसा से कोसों दूर था। 23 फरवरी 1969 को महज 36 साल की उम्र में उनका निधन हो गया। अपनी मौत से पहले वह करीब नौ साल तक बिस्तर पर पड़ी रहीं।

उनकी मुश्किलों की शुरुआत ‘नया दौर’ की शूटिंग के दौरान हुई। मधुबाला ने करीब दस दिन की शूटिंग की थी कि उनके पिता अताउल्लाह खान ने उन्हें आगे शूटिंग करने से मना कर दिया।

उन्हें अपनी बेटी की सेहत और बाहरी लोकेशन पर शूटिंग की चिंता थी।

जब निर्देशक बी.आर. चोपड़ा ने मूल शेड्यूल पर जोर दिया, तो मधुबाला के पिता ने निर्देशक के खिलाफ मुकदमा कर दिया। इस मामले में मधुबाला के सह-अभिनेता दिलीप कुमार ने अताउल्लाह खान के खिलाफ गवाही दी।

कोर्ट ने चोपड़ा के पक्ष में फैसला सुनाया और मधुबाला की जगह वैजयंतीमाला को लिया गया। हालांकि बाद में मधुबाला ने चोपड़ा से माफी मांगी, लेकिन उनके और दिलीप कुमार के रिश्ते को जो नुकसान हुआ, वह कभी सुधर नहीं पाया।

1960 में मधुबाला ने गायक-अभिनेता किशोर कुमार से शादी कर ली। उनकी बहन मधुर भूषण के अनुसार, यह शादी दिलीप कुमार से नाराज़गी और जिद के कारण हुई थी, प्यार की वजह से नहीं। उस समय मधुबाला लंदन में अपने दिल की बीमारी — एक जन्मजात हृदय दोष — का इलाज कराने की योजना बना रही थीं।

शादी के कुछ ही समय बाद किशोर कुमार उन्हें लंदन ले गए, जहां डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें सिर्फ दो साल की जिंदगी बताई। भारत लौटने के बाद, उनके पति ने उनसे दूरी बना ली।

उन्होंने मुंबई के कार्टर रोड पर एक घर खरीदा और मधुबाला को वहां एक नर्स और ड्राइवर के साथ अकेला छोड़ दिया। वह कुछ-कुछ महीनों में एक बार मिलने आते थे और अक्सर उनके फोन नहीं उठाते थे।

इस अकेलेपन का उन पर बहुत बुरा असर पड़ा। जिस महिला की तुलना मोना लिसा से की जाती थी, जिसका चेहरा अनगिनत पत्रिकाओं के कवर पर छाया था और जिसने लाखों लोगों को प्रेरित किया, वह खुद को पूरी तरह अकेला पाकर टूट गईं।

उनकी बहन के अनुसार, वह बिस्तर पर पड़ी रहीं और “सिर्फ हड्डियों और चमड़ी” में तब्दील हो गईं। वह अक्सर रोती थीं और जिंदा रहने की भीख मांगती थीं।

अपने आखिरी दिनों में भी दिलीप कुमार की याद उन्हें सताती रही। उनकी बहन ने बताया कि मधुबाला उन्हें कभी नहीं भूल पाईं।

जब वह ब्रीच कैंडी अस्पताल में भर्ती थीं, तो दिलीप कुमार उनसे मिलने आए और साथ काम करने का वादा किया। हालांकि, सायरा बानो से शादी के बाद वे दोबारा कभी नहीं मिले।

मधुबाला की मौत के बाद दिलीप कुमार और उनका परिवार कब्रिस्तान पहुंचे, लेकिन तब तक दफ़न की रस्म पूरी हो चुकी थी।
