Iranian Student Najmeh Amini Faces Death Sentence Over Social Media Post
TEHRAN: The reported death sentence against Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old Iranian accounting student accused of blasphemy over remarks linked to a social media post, has drawn renewed attention to Iran’s treatment of online expression and political dissent.
Human rights advocates have raised concerns about the case, warning that the punishment could have serious implications for freedom of speech.
According to a report by The Guardian, Amini was initially detained during nationwide anti-government demonstrations in January.
She was reportedly arrested again in February by Iran’s cyber police, known as Fata, following scrutiny of her online activity.
A source close to her family told the US-based Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) news agency, Hrana, that she was subsequently sentenced to death for sab ol-nabi, a charge relating to insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
The social media post at the centre of the case has not been made public, leaving the precise nature of the alleged remarks unclear.
Arrests During Anti-Government Protests
Amini’s first detention came amid a sweeping crackdown on protests against the Iranian government.
According to figures cited by Hrana, more than 50,000 people were arrested during the security operation, while thousands were reportedly killed.
Her case subsequently expanded beyond the blasphemy allegation.
Reports indicate that she received a separate prison sentence of 12 years, six months and one day on charges said to include acting against national security and disseminating propaganda against the Iranian authorities.
An audio recording attributed to Amini and released last month reportedly contained an appeal for international intervention.
Addressing the United Nations, legal professionals, human rights organisations and the wider international community, she urged them to examine her case and help ensure that her voice was heard.
“I do not want to make a hero out of myself today. I only want one thing: be my voice,” she said, according to The Guardian.
What Does Iranian Law Say About Blasphemy?
Iran’s Islamic Penal Code provides for the death penalty for certain forms of blasphemy.
Article 262 prescribes capital punishment for insulting the Prophet Muhammad or revered religious figures in circumstances covered by the law.
Article 263, however, outlines exceptions relating to cases in which the remarks were made without deliberate intent or under intoxication, although other penalties may still apply.
Iranian newspaper Khorasan, which reportedly confirmed the judicial proceedings, said Amini told the court that she had made the remarks while experiencing hallucinations after consuming psychedelic mushrooms with friends.
Her defence team reportedly characterised the incident as an unintentional verbal mistake.
The presiding judge is said to have rejected this explanation. According to the report, the judge questioned why Amini had not made comparable remarks about other people or political adversaries of the Iranian government, including the United States and Israel, if she had genuinely been experiencing hallucinations.
The reported ruling has not exhausted the legal process. Amini’s death sentence is not final and can be challenged before Iran’s Supreme Court.
Rights Groups Warn Against Expanding Use of Death Penalty
Human rights organisations have expressed concern that executions are increasingly being used in Iran to deter dissent and restrict public expression.
The Oslo-based Iran Human Rights organisation, IHRNGO, has reported that more than 600 executions have already taken place in Iran this year.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the organisation’s director, warned that sentencing a young woman to death over online expression could weaken protections for peaceful speech and broaden the circumstances in which capital punishment is imposed.
He also argued that the case should serve as a warning to governments and international institutions about the potential consequences of failing to respond firmly to such developments.
Amiry-Moghaddam cautioned that a muted international response could encourage further cases involving severe punishment for expression, making the protection of fundamental rights an increasingly urgent concern.
