Nagaland Floods and Landslides: CM Neiphiu Rio Visits Mon as Death Toll Climbs to Seven, Rescue Operations Continue
Kohima/ Mon: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday travelled to the landslide-ravaged Mon district to review the extent of destruction caused by days of relentless rainfall, even as the death toll from floods and landslides increased to seven following the recovery of two more bodies.
Rescue personnel are still searching for two people who remain missing beneath the debris.
Authorities said search teams located two additional victims during operations on Monday, including the body of a 13-year-old boy.
According to Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, one of the seven fatalities occurred in Tizit sub-division, where a resident lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters.
Providing an update on the rescue efforts, Konyak said seven bodies have so far been recovered, while two individuals are still unaccounted for.
Search and rescue volunteers, assisted by local agencies, continue to comb the affected areas in the hope of locating the missing persons.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that Mon district has been completely cut off from neighbouring regions after landslides blocked major roads and floodwaters disrupted connectivity.
He added that the administration’s immediate priorities are to recover the remaining missing persons and restore access by clearing key road links.
Preliminary assessments indicate widespread destruction across the district. Nearly 800 houses have either been damaged or destroyed by landslides and flooding, affecting around 4,500 residents and leaving many families in urgent need of assistance.
During his visit, Chief Minister Rio held discussions with district officials, representatives of tribal organisations and youth volunteers engaged in relief operations.
He announced immediate financial assistance of ₹10 lakh for civil society groups led by the Konyak Union to support emergency relief measures and assured residents that the state government would extend every possible assistance to rehabilitate the affected areas.
Sharing details of his visit on social media platform X, Rio said he reviewed the ground situation, interacted with community leaders and relief workers, assessed ongoing rescue and restoration efforts, and also conducted an aerial survey of the worst-affected Tizit and Tuli regions.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring timely relief and the early restoration of normal life.
Earlier, the Chief Minister had announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the families of each deceased victim, along with financial assistance of ₹74,000 for every injured person affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has placed all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) on maximum alert following continuous heavy rainfall that triggered landslides, flash floods and extensive waterlogging across several parts of the state.
Apart from Mon district, the calamity has also impacted Mokokchung, Shamator and Wokha.
The NSDMA has instructed district administrations to give top priority to public safety by evacuating residents from low-lying flood-prone localities, unstable riverbanks, vulnerable embankments and areas susceptible to fresh landslides.

कोहिमा/मोन: नागालैंड के मुख्यमंत्री नेफियू रियो सोमवार को लगातार हो रही भारी बारिश से तबाह हुए मोन जिले का दौरा कर हालात का जायजा लेने पहुंचे।
इस बीच, भूस्खलन और बाढ़ से मरने वालों की संख्या दो और शव मिलने के बाद बढ़कर सात हो गई है, जबकि मलबे में दबे दो अन्य लोगों की तलाश अभी भी जारी है।
बचाव अधिकारियों ने बताया कि सोमवार को चलाए गए खोज अभियान के दौरान दो और शव बरामद किए गए, जिनमें 13 वर्षीय एक बालक भी शामिल है।
मोन के उपायुक्त वेन्येई कोन्याक के अनुसार, सात मृतकों में से एक व्यक्ति की मौत तिजित उपमंडल में बाढ़ के तेज बहाव में बह जाने से हुई।
ताजा स्थिति की जानकारी देते हुए उपायुक्त ने कहा कि अब तक कुल सात शव बरामद किए जा चुके हैं, जबकि दो लोग अभी भी लापता हैं।
स्थानीय स्वयंसेवकों और बचाव दलों की सहायता से प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में लगातार तलाश अभियान चलाया जा रहा है।
उन्होंने बताया कि भूस्खलन और बाढ़ के कारण मोन जिला चारों ओर से देश के अन्य हिस्सों से कट गया है। प्रमुख सड़कों के बाधित होने से राहत एवं बचाव कार्य प्रभावित हुआ है।
प्रशासन फिलहाल दो प्रमुख लक्ष्यों पर काम कर रहा है—लापता लोगों का पता लगाना और मुख्य सड़कों को यातायात के लिए जल्द से जल्द बहाल करना।
प्रारंभिक आकलन के अनुसार जिले में करीब 800 मकान भूस्खलन और बाढ़ से क्षतिग्रस्त हुए हैं, जिससे लगभग 4,500 लोग प्रभावित हुए हैं।
बड़ी संख्या में परिवारों को अस्थायी राहत शिविरों और तत्काल सहायता की आवश्यकता है।
दौरे के दौरान मुख्यमंत्री नेफियू रियो ने जिला प्रशासन, विभिन्न जनजातीय संगठनों तथा राहत कार्यों में जुटे युवा स्वयंसेवकों से मुलाकात कर स्थिति की विस्तृत जानकारी ली।
उन्होंने कोन्याक यूनियन के नेतृत्व वाले नागरिक संगठनों को तत्काल राहत कार्यों के लिए 10 लाख रुपये की सहायता प्रदान की और भरोसा दिलाया कि राज्य सरकार प्रभावित क्षेत्रों के पुनर्वास और राहत कार्यों में हरसंभव सहयोग करेगी।
मुख्यमंत्री ने बाद में सोशल मीडिया मंच ‘एक्स’ पर जानकारी साझा करते हुए कहा कि उन्होंने प्रभावित इलाकों की जमीनी स्थिति का निरीक्षण किया, सामुदायिक नेताओं और राहत कार्यकर्ताओं से बातचीत की तथा चल रहे राहत एवं पुनर्बहाली कार्यों की समीक्षा की।
उन्होंने तिजित और तुली के सबसे अधिक प्रभावित क्षेत्रों का हवाई सर्वेक्षण भी किया और कहा कि सरकार राहत पहुंचाने तथा सामान्य जनजीवन जल्द बहाल करने के लिए पूरी तरह प्रतिबद्ध है।
इससे पहले मुख्यमंत्री ने प्रत्येक मृतक के परिजनों को चार लाख रुपये की अनुग्रह राशि तथा प्रत्येक घायल व्यक्ति को 74 हजार रुपये की आर्थिक सहायता देने की घोषणा भी की थी।
उधर, लगातार हो रही मूसलाधार बारिश के कारण राज्य में भूस्खलन, अचानक आई बाढ़ और व्यापक जलभराव की स्थिति को देखते हुए नागालैंड राज्य आपदा प्रबंधन प्राधिकरण (एनएसडीएमए) ने सभी जिला आपदा प्रबंधन प्राधिकरणों (डीडीएमए) को हाई अलर्ट पर रहने के निर्देश दिए हैं।
साथ ही सभी जिला आपातकालीन संचालन केंद्रों को पूरी तरह सक्रिय करने को कहा गया है।
मोन के अलावा मोकोकचुंग, शामाटोर और वोखा जिले भी इस प्राकृतिक आपदा से गंभीर रूप से प्रभावित हुए हैं।
एनएसडीएमए ने जिला प्रशासन को निर्देश दिया है कि निचले इलाकों, जलभराव वाले क्षेत्रों, अस्थिर नदी तटों, कमजोर तटबंधों और भूस्खलन की आशंका वाले स्थानों से लोगों को प्राथमिकता के आधार पर सुरक्षित स्थानों पर पहुंचाया जाए ताकि जनहानि को न्यूनतम किया जा सके।
