India Successfully Tests Indigenous Kusha Air Defence System, Boosting Long-Range Missile Shield
New Delhi: India on Thursday achieved a major milestone in its indigenous defence programme by successfully carrying out the maiden flight test of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) system Kusha, a homegrown weapon designed to intercept hostile aerial targets at distances of up to 350 kilometres.
Defence officials said the system is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s layered air defence architecture once it enters operational service.
According to officials familiar with the programme, the Kusha weapon system has been developed to engage airborne threats across a range of approximately 150 to 350 kilometres.
They indicated that, following further trials and validation, the missile system is likely to be inducted into the armed forces within the next three to four years.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the successful trial from Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
During the test, the missile intercepted an electronic target that simulated a fast-moving, high-altitude aerial threat, demonstrating the system’s ability to accurately detect, track and destroy incoming targets under operational conditions, the Defence Ministry said.
Designed as a comprehensive long-range air defence platform, Kusha is capable of countering a wide spectrum of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, cruise and other missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and larger airborne platforms operating at varying altitudes and distances.
The Defence Ministry stated that every critical component of the weapon system—including interceptor missiles, surveillance radars, command-and-control infrastructure and associated technologies—has been developed indigenously by various DRDO laboratories in collaboration with Indian defence industry partners.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the successful flight test as a landmark achievement for India’s strategic capabilities.
He said the development places India among a select group of countries capable of designing and producing advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems.
Singh added that indigenous development of Kusha would substantially reduce dependence on foreign suppliers while considerably enhancing the nation’s air defence preparedness.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who is also holding additional charge of DRDO, supervised the launch activities and congratulated scientists, engineers and all personnel associated with the successful execution of the missile trial.
India’s existing long-range air defence capability is currently anchored by the Russian-made S-400 Triumf missile system.
Under a government-to-government agreement signed in October 2018, New Delhi ordered five S-400 squadrons from Russia in a deal valued at ₹39,000 crore.
The Indian Air Force has already operationalised three units, received the fourth system in June this year, and is expected to receive the fifth and final squadron before the end of the year.
Earlier this year, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved defence procurement proposals worth approximately ₹2.38 lakh crore aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of the armed forces.
The package includes additional S-400 air defence systems, remotely piloted strike aircraft, military transport aircraft, advanced artillery platforms and ammunition for armoured formations.
The proposal to procure five more S-400 units is expected to further reinforce India’s air defence shield.
Defence planners believe the additional systems, which were employed against Pakistani aerial assets during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, will substantially improve the Indian Air Force’s capability to detect, identify, monitor and neutralise hostile aircraft, missiles and drones over long distances.
Apart from the S-400, India’s integrated air defence network includes several indigenous and imported platforms.
These comprise the Akash missile system, Samar surface-to-air missile system, Israel’s SpyDer, legacy Soviet-origin systems such as Pechora, OSA-AK, Tunguska, Strela and Shilka, along with ZU-23-2B anti-aircraft guns, upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns originally developed by Sweden’s Bofors, and the Igla man-portable air defence missile system (MANPADS), providing layered protection against a wide range of airborne threats.
