National Film Awards Move to Gujarat Sparks Political Clash Over Venue and Regional Representation
72nd National Film Awards to be held at Ekta Nagar on September 22; Opposition questions Gujarat choice while BJP defends decision to take ceremony beyond Delhi
MUMBAI, September 11, 2026: The venue of this year’s National Film Awards has become the unlikely centre of a political confrontation, with opposition leaders questioning the decision to take India’s premier film awards ceremony to Gujarat and the BJP defending the move as an effort to broaden the event’s national reach.
The 72nd edition is scheduled for September 22 at Ekta Nagar in Narmada district, placing the ceremony against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity.
The relocation represents a major break from the established pattern of holding the awards in the national capital.
The awards have traditionally been associated with Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan, where the ceremony has been held since the National Film Awards began in 1954.
The principal exception was the 17th edition, which was organised in Chennai in 1971.
The Gujarat venue has prompted criticism from several political figures who say a national film honour should either remain in New Delhi or be taken to a city with a particularly strong historical association with Indian cinema.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has accused the Centre of creating a regional divide by choosing Gujarat for the event.
He questioned why major film centres such as Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, as well as other state capitals, could not have been considered.
His party colleague and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has called for a much stronger response, appealing to artists to stay away from the ceremony.
Raut questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi was being treated as a leader of Gujarat alone and suggested that the decision could have political implications ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections.
Raut also questioned whether the event was effectively being turned into a Gujarat-focused programme and urged award recipients not to attend.
In an unusually sharp attack, he described those behind the decision as “dimagi Naxals.”
The venue has drawn criticism from outside the political establishment as well. Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, who was born in Mumbai to a Gujarati family and is known for films including Parzania and Raees, said he had no particular objection to Delhi no longer hosting the ceremony but questioned why Gujarat had been selected.
Dholakia argued that, if the awards were to travel outside the capital, the opportunity could have been given to a state with a deeper institutional or cultural association with filmmaking.
He specifically mentioned Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while also suggesting Hyderabad as a possible host.
NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule has similarly argued that the ceremony should be held in New Delhi, citing the city’s status as the national capital.
The BJP has rejected the criticism.
A Gujarat BJP spokesperson accused the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction of repeatedly opposing the state’s development and said the National Film Award could not be regarded as the exclusive property of any particular state.
The government’s stated position is that the awards should reach audiences and regions beyond the national capital rather than remain permanently tied to Delhi.
However, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has not publicly provided a detailed explanation for selecting Ekta Nagar specifically, nor has it clarified whether future ceremonies will systematically rotate among different states.
The setting itself gives this year’s ceremony a strong Gujarat identity. Ekta Nagar is home to the 597-foot Statue of Unity, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
The connection is further underlined by the fact that a film centred on the Statue of Unity is among this year’s award-winning entries.
President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to honour 92 recipients at the ceremony, including the winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Article 370 has been chosen as the Best Feature Film, while Mammootty, for Bramayugam, and Kartik Aaryan, for Chandu Champion, will share the Best Actor in a Leading Role award.
Yami Gautam has been selected as Best Actress for Article 370.
Preparations are also giving the event an unusually elaborate setting. A German aluminium structural dome is planned for the bus-bay area near the Statue of Unity, with arrangements for approximately 1,000 guests.
The immediate political question is whether Raut’s boycott appeal will gain traction among award-winning filmmakers and performers.
But the dispute has already moved beyond the question of a venue.
At its heart is a broader argument over whether a national cultural institution should remain anchored in the capital or deliberately travel across India’s regions.
With the ceremony only days away, the National Film Awards are therefore carrying an additional significance this year: the awards themselves will honour India’s cinema, while the choice of where those honours are presented has become a debate about India’s federal and cultural landscape.

विपक्षी नेताओं ने गुजरात के चयन पर सवाल उठाए हैं, जबकि भाजपा ने इसे राष्ट्रीय आयोजन को दिल्ली से बाहर ले जाने की व्यापक पहल का हिस्सा बताया है।
इस वर्ष का समारोह स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी के आसपास आयोजित किया जा रहा है। यह फैसला इसलिए भी महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है क्योंकि राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों की पहचान लंबे समय से नई दिल्ली के विज्ञान भवन से जुड़ी रही है।
1954 में पुरस्कार शुरू होने के बाद से समारोह सामान्यतः दिल्ली में आयोजित होता रहा है। हालांकि, 1971 में हुए 17वें समारोह का आयोजन चेन्नई में किया गया था। इस अपवाद के बाद राजधानी से बाहर आयोजन की परंपरा नियमित रूप से देखने को नहीं मिली।
गुजरात को मेजबानी मिलने के साथ ही सवाल यह उठने लगा है कि देश के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित फिल्म सम्मानों के लिए किसी ऐसे शहर या राज्य को क्यों नहीं चुना गया जिसकी भारतीय फिल्म उद्योग में लंबे समय से प्रमुख भूमिका रही है।
शिवसेना (यूबीटी) प्रमुख उद्धव ठाकरे ने इसी आधार पर केन्द्र सरकार पर निशाना साधा। उन्होंने पूछा कि मुंबई, कोलकाता और बेंगलुरु जैसे फिल्म और सांस्कृतिक केन्द्रों के अलावा अन्य राज्यों की राजधानियों को आयोजन के लिए क्यों नहीं चुना गया।
ठाकरे ने आरोप लगाया कि गुजरात और देश के बाकी हिस्सों के बीच एक तरह की दूरी पैदा करने की कोशिश की जा रही है।
शिवसेना (यूबीटी) के राज्यसभा सांसद संजय राउत ने इस मुद्दे पर और कड़ा रुख अपनाते हुए कलाकारों से समारोह का बहिष्कार करने की अपील की।
उन्होंने सवाल उठाया कि प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को केवल गुजरात से जोड़कर क्यों देखा जा रहा है और राष्ट्रीय स्तर के आयोजन को राजधानी से हटाने के पीछे क्या उद्देश्य है।
राउत ने यह भी संकेत दिया कि गुजरात विधानसभा चुनावों को ध्यान में रखकर आयोजन स्थल चुना गया हो सकता है।
उन्होंने कलाकारों से गुजरात न जाने की अपील की और पुरस्कार लेने से इनकार करने को देश के प्रति सम्मान से जोड़ा। फैसले से जुड़े लोगों के लिए उन्होंने बेहद तीखी भाषा का इस्तेमाल करते हुए उन्हें “दिमागी नक्सली” तक कहा।
राजनीतिक विवाद के बीच फिल्म जगत से भी असहमति की आवाज सामने आई। राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार विजेता निर्देशक राहुल ढोलकिया ने गुजरात को आयोजन स्थल बनाए जाने पर सवाल उठाया।
मुंबई में जन्मे ढोलकिया, जिनकी फिल्मों में परजानिया और रईस शामिल हैं, ने कहा कि उन्हें दिल्ली में समारोह आयोजित किए जाने से कोई विशेष लगाव नहीं है, लेकिन दिल्ली से बाहर ले जाने पर गुजरात के चयन का कारण समझ में नहीं आता।
ढोलकिया ने तर्क दिया कि यदि समारोह को राजधानी से बाहर ले जाने का निर्णय लिया गया था, तो ऐसे राज्य को यह सम्मान दिया जा सकता था जिसका भारतीय सिनेमा के विकास में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा है।
उन्होंने महाराष्ट्र, केरल और तमिलनाडु का नाम लिया तथा हैदराबाद को भी संभावित विकल्प के रूप में गिनाया।
एनसीपी (एसपी) की कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष सुप्रिया सुले ने भी कहा कि राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार समारोह देश की राजधानी नई दिल्ली में होना चाहिए।
गुजरात भाजपा ने विपक्ष के हमलों को राजनीतिक बताया है। पार्टी के एक प्रवक्ता ने शिवसेना (यूबीटी) पर गुजरात के विकास से जुड़े मुद्दों पर लगातार विरोध करने का आरोप लगाया और कहा कि राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार किसी एक राज्य की संपत्ति नहीं हैं।
सरकार की ओर से यह व्यापक तर्क दिया गया है कि राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों को केवल राजधानी तक सीमित रखने के बजाय देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में ले जाया जाना चाहिए।
हालांकि, सूचना एवं प्रसारण मंत्रालय ने अभी तक यह स्पष्ट नहीं किया है कि इस वर्ष एकता नगर को ही क्यों चुना गया या आने वाले वर्षों में समारोह की मेजबानी अलग-अलग राज्यों को नियमित रूप से दी जाएगी या नहीं।
एकता नगर का चयन समारोह को गुजरात की विशिष्ट पहचान भी देता है। यहीं 597 फुट ऊंची सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल की प्रतिमा, स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी, स्थित है।
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने 2018 में इसका उद्घाटन किया था। इस वर्ष पुरस्कार पाने वाली फिल्मों में स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी पर आधारित फिल्म भी शामिल है।
समारोह में राष्ट्रपति द्रौपदी मुर्मू 92 पुरस्कार विजेताओं को सम्मानित करेंगी। इनमें दादासाहेब फाल्के पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाला नाम भी शामिल होगा।
आर्टिकल 370 को सर्वश्रेष्ठ फीचर फिल्म चुना गया है। ब्रमायुगम के लिए मम्मूटी और चंदू चैंपियन के लिए कार्तिक आर्यन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का सम्मान साझा रूप से मिलेगा।
आर्टिकल 370 के लिए यामी गौतम को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री चुना गया है।
आयोजन की तैयारियां भी बड़े पैमाने पर की जा रही हैं। स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी के बस-बे क्षेत्र में जर्मनी निर्मित एल्युमिनियम स्ट्रक्चरल डोम तैयार किया जाएगा। इसमें करीब 1,000 मेहमानों के बैठने की व्यवस्था होगी।
अब सबकी नजर इस बात पर है कि क्या संजय राउत की बहिष्कार की अपील फिल्म जगत में असर डालती है या पुरस्कार विजेता कलाकार समारोह में पहुंचते हैं। हालांकि, इससे भी बड़ा सवाल अब आयोजन स्थल का बन चुका है।
राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों का गुजरात पहुंचना एक ऐसे समय में हुआ है जब सांस्कृतिक आयोजनों के क्षेत्रीय प्रतिनिधित्व को लेकर बहस तेज है।
इस बार पुरस्कार भारतीय सिनेमा की उपलब्धियों का सम्मान करेंगे, लेकिन उन्हें कहां प्रदान किया जाए—इस सवाल ने समारोह को एक व्यापक राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक बहस के केन्द्र में ला खड़ा किया है।
