KATHMANDU: Hope has returned to the search for workers missing after Nepal’s devastating flash floods, with two men found alive inside the Trishul 3A hydropower tunnel nine days after floodwaters swept through the area.
The rescued workers were identified as Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, officials said.
One works as a mechanical foreman and the other as a mechanical supervisor. Both were taken for medical observation after being brought out of the tunnel.
The rescue was carried out by a joint search team, according to Nepal Army Brigadier General Raja Ram Basnet.
He said the two men had been trapped following the flooding of the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on 10 Bhadra.
Images from the rescue site showed one of the survivors covered in mud and being carried out on a rescuer’s shoulder, underscoring the difficult conditions faced by the teams working inside the damaged tunnel system.
The development came as rescuers succeeded in establishing communication with other people who are still believed to be trapped underground.
Search teams have continued working in the hope that more survivors can be reached.
Nepalese lawmaker Shri Ram Neupane separately announced the rescue of the second worker on Facebook, shortly after Basnet had confirmed that the first survivor had been brought out alive.
The rescue operation remains far from over.
The Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal estimates that 557 workers associated with the Trishuli 3A hydropower project are still missing.
Of those, around 115 are believed to be inside the main tunnel along the Trishuli River.
Authorities are continuing the operation because of the possibility that people remain alive in the underground passages.
The discovery of the two workers after nine days has strengthened those hopes as teams press ahead with the search.
The wider disaster has left Nepal facing a major humanitarian crisis.
The country’s disaster management agency has reported at least 1,259 deaths and more than 5,000 people missing, with a glacier collapse suspected of triggering the catastrophic flash floods.
The disaster has also crossed into Tibet. Chinese authorities said late Wednesday that 21 people had died and 541 remained missing on the Tibet side of the border.
The scale of the impact on Nepal’s hydropower sector has been particularly severe.
Local authorities estimate that about 900 workers are missing from 12 hydropower projects, with roughly 500 of them thought to be trapped inside tunnels.
For rescuers, the emergence of two survivors after more than a week has provided a crucial sign of hope amid one of Nepal’s deadliest recent flood disasters. Operations are continuing to locate those who remain missing.

त्रिशुल-3ए जलविद्युत परियोजना की सुरंग से नौ दिन बाद दो मजदूरों को जीवित बाहर निकाल लिया गया।
दोनों 26 अगस्त को आई अचानक बाढ़ के बाद सुरंग के भीतर फंस गए थे।
बचाए गए मजदूरों की पहचान संजय शाह और कबीर महर्जन के रूप में हुई है।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, इनमें एक मैकेनिकल फोरमैन और दूसरा मैकेनिकल सुपरवाइजर है। सुरंग से बाहर निकाले जाने के बाद दोनों को चिकित्सकीय निगरानी में रखा गया है।
नेपाल सेना के ब्रिगेडियर जनरल राजा राम बस्नेत ने बताया कि दोनों को संयुक्त तलाशी एवं बचाव दल ने सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला।
उनके अनुसार, रासुवा क्षेत्र में 10 भाद्र को भोटेकोशी नदी में आई भीषण बाढ़ के बाद दोनों सुरंग में फंस गए थे।
बचाव अभियान से सामने आई तस्वीरों में एक जीवित बचे मजदूर को मिट्टी से पूरी तरह सना हुआ देखा गया। एक बचावकर्मी उसे अपने कंधे पर उठाकर सुरंग से बाहर ला रहा था।
इससे अभियान की कठिन परिस्थितियों का अंदाजा लगाया जा सकता है।
अभियान की एक और महत्वपूर्ण सफलता यह रही कि बचाव दलों ने सुरंग के अंदर मौजूद अन्य लोगों से संपर्क कायम कर लिया है।
इससे अधिकारियों को उम्मीद है कि वहां फंसे कुछ अन्य लोगों को भी सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला जा सकता है।
नेपाल के सांसद श्री राम नेउपाने ने सेना की ओर से पहले मजदूर के जीवित मिलने की जानकारी सामने आने के कुछ ही समय बाद दूसरे व्यक्ति के बचाव की सूचना अपने फेसबुक पेज पर साझा की।
हालांकि, राहत एवं बचाव कार्य अभी बड़े पैमाने पर जारी है। इंडिपेंडेंट पावर प्रोड्यूसर्स एसोसिएशन ऑफ नेपाल के मुताबिक, त्रिशुल-3ए जलविद्युत परियोजना से जुड़े 557 मजदूर अब भी लापता हैं।
इनमें से करीब 115 लोगों के मुख्य सुरंग में फंसे होने की आशंका है, जो त्रिशुली नदी के किनारे स्थित है।
