TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: The deadly explosion at a wedding gathering in southern Iran has triggered an investigation in Washington after five people, including two children and three women, were killed in the blast, with weapons specialists cited by Reuters saying the damage was consistent with a direct strike by a US munition.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday at a wedding in Kushetak.
Although Washington has not acknowledged carrying out the attack, an analysis of photographs and videos verified by Reuters led four military weapons experts to conclude that the destruction appeared to have resulted from a munition hitting the gathering directly.
The experts, according to Reuters, found little evidence that the blast was caused by a weapon first striking another target and then producing secondary damage.
Their assessment has added to questions surrounding an incident that Iranian media have also attributed to a US strike.
Washington has not settled on the cause.
A US official told Reuters that investigators were examining multiple possibilities, including a direct American attack, falling debris, a ricochet involving an Iranian air-defence missile, or a defensive interceptor that may have gone off course.
US Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the administration was looking into what happened.
He said the government wanted to establish the facts because civilian deaths were a matter of concern.
Vance also sought to contrast the US military’s approach with that of Iran, arguing that if American forces make mistakes, the military examines them and attempts to draw lessons from them.
The US military, meanwhile, said it was aware of reports emerging from Iran about the wedding deaths. It maintained that American forces do not deliberately target civilians.
The episode comes at a politically difficult moment for President Donald Trump’s administration.
Pressure is increasing inside the United States for the conflict to be brought to an end, while the war is beginning to weigh on Trump’s approval ratings.
With the November midterm elections approaching, the political consequences of the continuing fighting have become an additional concern for the administration.
The wedding blast is also drawing attention because it follows another deadly incident involving American military action in Iran.
Around six months earlier, a missile struck a primary school in an attack that Iranian authorities said killed more than 175 children and teachers.
Reuters had earlier reported that an initial internal US military assessment had pointed to American forces as the likely source of that school strike.
The Pentagon, however, has not made the findings of its investigation public.
The latest incident therefore leaves two questions running in parallel: whether the wedding gathering was directly struck by a US weapon, and how Washington will respond if its investigation confirms that American military action caused the deaths.

अमेरिकी उपराष्ट्रपति जेडी वेंस ने गुरुवार को कहा कि प्रशासन घटना की जांच कर रहा है।
उनके मुताबिक, सरकार यह जानना चाहती है कि वास्तव में क्या हुआ, क्योंकि नागरिकों की मौत को लेकर अमेरिका चिंतित है।
वेंस ने यह भी कहा कि अमेरिकी सैन्य अभियानों में यदि कोई गलती होती है तो उससे सबक लेने और भविष्य में बेहतर करने की कोशिश की जाती है।
उन्होंने इसी आधार पर अमेरिकी और ईरानी सैन्य रवैये के बीच अंतर बताने का प्रयास किया।
अमेरिकी सेना ने भी ईरान से सामने आई रिपोर्टों का संज्ञान लेने की बात कही है। हालांकि उसने अपने रुख को स्पष्ट करते हुए कहा कि उसकी सैन्य कार्रवाई में नागरिकों को कभी निशाना नहीं बनाया जाता।
यह मामला ऐसे समय सामने आया है जब राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप के प्रशासन पर संघर्ष समाप्त करने का घरेलू दबाव बढ़ रहा है।
