The iconic folk artist, who had been undergoing treatment since May 27, was 70 years old. Her demise marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in India’s rich tradition of folk storytelling.
Born in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh, Teejan Bai emerged as the most celebrated ambassador of Pandavani, the state’s traditional narrative folk art that brings episodes from the Mahabharata to life through expressive storytelling, soulful singing, and powerful musical accompaniment.
Her unmatched style and commanding stage presence helped transform a regional art form into a globally admired cultural tradition.
Blessed with a distinctive voice and exceptional storytelling skills, Teejan Bai mesmerised audiences across India and overseas for decades.
She played a pivotal role in introducing Chhattisgarh’s folk heritage to the international stage, earning widespread recognition as one of India’s greatest folk performers.
In recognition of her unparalleled contribution to Indian art and culture, Teejan Bai received some of the country’s highest civilian honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
Her achievements inspired generations of artists and ensured that Pandavani would continue to flourish beyond regional boundaries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over her passing and paid tribute to her remarkable legacy.
In a message posted on X, he said Teejan Bai had given Chhattisgarh’s traditional folk art a unique global identity through her unforgettable performances.
Calling her death an irreparable loss to the world of art and culture, the Prime Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to her family, admirers and countless followers, praying for eternal peace to the departed soul.

भारतीय लोककला जगत ने रविवार को अपनी एक अनमोल धरोहर खो दी। पांडवानी की प्रख्यात लोकगायिका तीजन बाई का लंबी बीमारी के बाद अखिल भारतीय आयुर्विज्ञान संस्थान (एम्स), रायपुर में निधन हो गया। वह 27 मई से अस्पताल में उपचाराधीन थीं और 70 वर्ष की थीं।
उनके निधन से भारतीय लोक संस्कृति और पारंपरिक कला जगत में शोक की लहर दौड़ गई है।
छत्तीसगढ़ के दुर्ग जिले में जन्मी तीजन बाई को पांडवानी की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित और प्रभावशाली प्रस्तोता माना जाता था। पांडवानी छत्तीसगढ़ की पारंपरिक लोककथा शैली है, जिसमें महाभारत की कथाओं को भावपूर्ण वाचन, सशक्त गायन और संगीत के माध्यम से जीवंत रूप में प्रस्तुत किया जाता है।
अपनी अनूठी प्रस्तुति और प्रभावशाली मंचीय व्यक्तित्व के दम पर उन्होंने इस लोककला को देश की सीमाओं से बाहर वैश्विक पहचान दिलाई।

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने तीजन बाई के निधन पर गहरा शोक व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि उन्होंने अपनी विलक्षण प्रस्तुतियों के माध्यम से छत्तीसगढ़ की लोककला को वैश्विक स्तर पर विशिष्ट पहचान दिलाई।
उन्होंने कहा कि तीजन बाई का निधन कला और संस्कृति की दुनिया के लिए अपूरणीय क्षति है। प्रधानमंत्री ने शोक संतप्त परिवार, उनके प्रशंसकों और असंख्य शुभचिंतकों के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त करते हुए दिवंगत आत्मा की शांति के लिए प्रार्थना की।
