PM Modi’s 80th Independence Day Speech: Seven-Stream Vision for Viksit Bharat, Push for Self-Reliance
PM Modi’s 80th Independence Day speech from the Red Fort focused on Viksit Bharat 2047, self-reliance, seven development priorities, energy security and Olympic talent.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday used his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort to lay out a broad roadmap for India’s development over the coming decades, putting self-reliance, manufacturing, technology, connectivity, energy security and India’s global influence at the centre of his vision for a developed nation by 2047.
The Prime Minister hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort before addressing the country, marking another milestone in India’s journey since Independence.
Earlier in the morning, he paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and remembered the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
At the heart of Modi’s address was a ‘Saptadhara’, or seven-stream, approach that he said would support comprehensive development and strengthen India’s ability to rely on its own capabilities.
The seven areas identified by the Prime Minister included manufacturing with a focus on cost, quality and scale; agriculture and food processing; technological innovation; connectivity and infrastructure under Gati Shakti; defence self-reliance; development of the green and blue economies; and India’s global soft power through areas such as yoga, healthcare, tourism and creative arts.
Modi placed the country’s young population at the centre of this transformation.
In a significant announcement, he said a nationwide talent search would be undertaken to identify and train children between five and 15 years of age with an eye on the 2036 Olympics.
‘Viksit Bharat’ target for 2047
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that India would achieve its goal of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by the time the country marks 100 years of Independence in 2047.
He called for the entire country to work towards that objective, saying the achievement would demonstrate India’s resolve and alter the way the world views the country.
Modi also highlighted what he described as the progress made over the past 12 years.
He said people across social and economic groups had contributed to the country’s development and claimed that more than 25 crore people had moved out of poverty.
Self-reliance and ‘Vocal for Local’
A substantial part of the address was devoted to Aatmanirbharta, with Modi arguing that India must reduce its dependence on other countries and strengthen domestic capabilities.
He urged citizens to embrace swadeshi and the ‘Vocal for Local’ approach, stressing the need to manufacture more products within the country while improving their quality and competitiveness.
The Prime Minister also linked self-reliance to national security, saying India must have the capacity to protect and strengthen itself rather than remain dependent on external sources.
Focus on domestic energy resources
Modi also spoke about India’s efforts to expand exploration for domestic crude oil resources.
He said around 99% of the country’s coastal area had earlier remained unavailable for exploration and described the previous approach as a failure of ideas.
He said the government had opened up these areas for exploration and was looking towards the sea for new oil reserves.
Referring to the Samudra Manthan initiative announced last year, Modi said ₹85,000 crore had been allocated for the effort.
Areas that were previously closed to exploration, he said, had now been opened for further activity.
From post-Covid uncertainty to confidence
Reflecting on the years following the Covid-19 pandemic, Modi said India had faced a difficult international environment marked by conflicts and wars.
He recalled the fears and rumours that had circulated during the pandemic and its aftermath, including concerns over the availability of vaccines, fuel, diesel and fertilisers.
Despite those challenges, he said India continued to prepare itself and serve citizens in the spirit of ‘Nagrik Devo Bhava’.
The Prime Minister’s address thus combined a long-term development agenda with a call for greater economic and strategic independence, presenting self-reliance as a central pillar of India’s journey towards 2047.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations also carry additional historical significance as the country marks the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’.
President Droupadi Murmu, in her address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day, had also focused on the country’s future, highlighting students and young people as key architects of India’s next phase of development.
With the Red Fort address, Modi sought to connect that future with a broad national agenda—building domestic manufacturing capacity, advancing technology, securing energy supplies, strengthening defence capabilities and expanding India’s influence through its culture and global appeal.
