PM Modi’s New Zealand Visit: Christopher Luxon Backs India Trade Deal, Says Kiwi Exports Will Get Major Boost
A breakthrough in India-New Zealand economic ties is expected ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to New Zealand, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressing strong confidence that the proposed bilateral trade agreement will significantly benefit New Zealand’s economy.
He said the deal would create fresh business opportunities by giving exporters greater access to the fast-growing Indian market.
Emphasising the commercial gains, Luxon revealed that nearly 57 per cent of New Zealand’s exports to India would become tariff-free from the very first day after the agreement comes into effect.
In a message posted on X, he said the trade pact would open new avenues for Kiwi businesses and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The announcement comes just before Prime Minister Modi begins his July 10-11 visit to New Zealand at the invitation of Luxon.
The visit is expected to be historic, as it will be the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in almost 40 years.
During his stay in Auckland, Modi and Luxon are scheduled to hold wide-ranging discussions covering trade, investment, defence, education, technology and regional cooperation.
Both leaders are also expected to review the overall progress of bilateral relations and identify new areas for long-term strategic collaboration.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, recent years have witnessed steady growth in India-New Zealand ties, particularly in commerce, security cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
The visit is expected to further accelerate collaboration across several priority sectors.
Apart from official engagements, Prime Minister Modi is also likely to interact with prominent business leaders, sportspersons, and members of the Indian diaspora.
The outreach is aimed at strengthening community relations while encouraging greater investment and business partnerships between the two nations.
New Zealand marks the final destination of Prime Minister Modi’s three-country Indo-Pacific tour, which began in Indonesia and continued in Australia.
The diplomatic outreach reflects India’s broader strategy of expanding cooperation with trusted regional partners in areas such as trade, defence, technology, critical minerals and resilient supply chains.
Against the backdrop of changing geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific region, both countries are expected to deepen cooperation aimed at promoting a free, open and inclusive regional order while reducing excessive dependence on any single global market.

भारत और न्यूज़ीलैंड के आर्थिक संबंधों को नई मजबूती मिलने के संकेत उस समय मिले जब न्यूज़ीलैंड के प्रधानमंत्री क्रिस्टोफर लक्सन ने प्रस्तावित द्विपक्षीय व्यापार समझौते का जोरदार समर्थन किया।
उन्होंने कहा कि यह समझौता न्यूज़ीलैंड के उद्योग और निर्यात क्षेत्र के लिए नए अवसर पैदा करेगा तथा भारतीय बाजार तक पहुंच को पहले से कहीं अधिक आसान बनाएगा।
व्यापार समझौते से होने वाले लाभों पर प्रकाश डालते हुए लक्सन ने बताया कि समझौता लागू होने के पहले ही दिन से भारत को होने वाले न्यूज़ीलैंड के लगभग 57 प्रतिशत निर्यात पर सीमा शुल्क नहीं लगेगा।
सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर उन्होंने कहा कि यह पहल दोनों देशों के बीच आर्थिक साझेदारी को नई ऊंचाई देगी और न्यूज़ीलैंड के कारोबार को उल्लेखनीय गति मिलेगी।
यह घोषणा प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की 10 से 11 जुलाई तक प्रस्तावित न्यूज़ीलैंड यात्रा से ठीक पहले की गई है।
लगभग चार दशक बाद किसी भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री की यह पहली द्विपक्षीय यात्रा होगी, जिसे दोनों देशों के रिश्तों में एक महत्वपूर्ण पड़ाव माना जा रहा है।
ऑकलैंड में अपने प्रवास के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री मोदी और प्रधानमंत्री लक्सन के बीच व्यापार, निवेश, रक्षा, शिक्षा, प्रौद्योगिकी तथा क्षेत्रीय सहयोग सहित कई महत्वपूर्ण विषयों पर विस्तृत बातचीत होने की संभावना है।
दोनों नेता द्विपक्षीय संबंधों की प्रगति की समीक्षा करेंगे और भविष्य की रणनीतिक साझेदारी के नए क्षेत्रों पर भी विचार करेंगे।
प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय के अनुसार पिछले कुछ वर्षों में दोनों देशों के संबंधों में उल्लेखनीय प्रगति हुई है, विशेष रूप से व्यापार, सुरक्षा सहयोग और जन-से-जन संपर्क के क्षेत्र में। इस यात्रा से इन क्षेत्रों में सहयोग को और गति मिलने की उम्मीद जताई जा रही है।
औपचारिक बैठकों के अलावा प्रधानमंत्री मोदी प्रमुख उद्योगपतियों, खेल जगत की हस्तियों और भारतीय समुदाय के सदस्यों से भी मुलाकात करेंगे। इस संवाद का उद्देश्य निवेश, व्यापारिक साझेदारी और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों को और मजबूत बनाना है।
न्यूज़ीलैंड, प्रधानमंत्री मोदी की तीन देशों की इंडो-पैसिफिक यात्रा का अंतिम पड़ाव है। इससे पहले वे इंडोनेशिया और ऑस्ट्रेलिया का दौरा कर चुके हैं।
इस पूरे दौरे का उद्देश्य व्यापार, रक्षा, प्रौद्योगिकी, महत्वपूर्ण खनिजों और मजबूत आपूर्ति श्रृंखलाओं के क्षेत्र में विश्वसनीय साझेदारों के साथ सहयोग को विस्तार देना है।
इंडो-पैसिफिक क्षेत्र में तेजी से बदल रहे भू-राजनीतिक परिदृश्य के बीच भारत और न्यूज़ीलैंड एक मुक्त, खुला और समावेशी क्षेत्रीय व्यवस्था को मजबूत करने, आर्थिक साझेदारी का विस्तार करने तथा किसी एक बाजार पर अत्यधिक निर्भरता कम करने की दिशा में सहयोग बढ़ाने पर भी जोर देंगे।
