Poland Backs India’s Peace Role in Russia-Ukraine War, Says PM Modi Can Influence Putin
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues with no immediate signs of a breakthrough, Poland has expressed confidence in India’s potential to play a meaningful role in efforts aimed at ending the war.
Highlighting New Delhi’s diplomatic standing, a senior Polish minister said India remains one of the few countries capable of encouraging dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.
Sharing Poland’s perspective, Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski said India’s diplomatic intervention during the early phase of the conflict in 2022 helped prevent the crisis from escalating into a possible nuclear confrontation.
He suggested that New Delhi’s balanced engagement with both sides demonstrated its ability to contribute constructively during periods of heightened global tension.
During an interaction with ANI, Bartoszewski described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one of the world’s most respected statesmen and noted that India has maintained a long and stable relationship with Russia, dating back to the Soviet era, while pursuing its policy of strategic autonomy.
According to the Polish minister, Russian President Vladimir Putin values Prime Minister Modi’s views and takes his counsel seriously.
Emphasising India’s diplomatic influence, Bartoszewski observed that Prime Minister Modi is among the very few global leaders who possess the credibility and stature to persuade President Putin.
He said India’s constructive engagement could become an important factor in encouraging steps towards peace and reducing tensions between the two countries.
Reflecting on developments during 2022, the Polish minister recalled India’s consistent appeal for restraint and nuclear de-escalation at a time when concerns over the conflict expanding into a wider confrontation had intensified.
He noted that New Delhi had advocated dialogue and peaceful resolution even as the war entered a dangerous phase.
The period also witnessed India’s large-scale humanitarian mission, Operation Ganga, under which thousands of Indian students stranded in war-hit Ukraine were safely evacuated.
The operation was widely recognised as one of India’s biggest overseas evacuation efforts during the conflict.
Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin recently praised India, describing it as a “great country” and commending New Delhi’s independent approach to foreign policy.
His remarks came against the backdrop of continuing differences between India and the United States over India’s purchase of Russian crude oil and its broader economic engagement with Moscow.
Criticising attempts to pressure New Delhi over its ties with Russia, Putin said such measures were counterproductive and harmful to bilateral as well as international relations.
He added that India, as a sovereign nation, has every right to pursue policies that serve its national interests and economic priorities.
Speaking during the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Russian President said Moscow welcomed India’s growing engagement with countries across the world.
Stressing that India’s economic decisions should be guided solely by its own interests, Putin remarked that it was natural for New Delhi to strengthen relations with nations it considers important for its development.

रूस और यूक्रेन के बीच जारी युद्ध के लंबे खिंचने के बीच पोलैंड ने शांति स्थापना के प्रयासों में भारत की भूमिका को बेहद महत्वपूर्ण बताया है।
पोलैंड का मानना है कि वैश्विक स्तर पर भारत की संतुलित कूटनीतिक छवि उसे उन गिने-चुने देशों में शामिल करती है, जो दोनों पक्षों के बीच संवाद को आगे बढ़ाने में प्रभावी योगदान दे सकते हैं।
पोलैंड के उप विदेश मंत्री व्लादिस्लाव तेओफिल बार्तोशेव्स्की ने कहा कि वर्ष 2022 में भारत की सक्रिय कूटनीतिक पहल ने युद्ध को परमाणु टकराव की दिशा में बढ़ने से रोकने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी।
उनके अनुसार, उस कठिन दौर में भारत ने संयम और संवाद पर जोर देकर अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुदाय के सामने एक जिम्मेदार शक्ति के रूप में अपनी पहचान मजबूत की।
समाचार एजेंसी एएनआई से बातचीत में बार्तोशेव्स्की ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को विश्व के सबसे सम्मानित नेताओं में से एक बताते हुए कहा कि भारत और रूस के बीच दशकों पुराने विश्वासपूर्ण संबंध हैं, जिनकी शुरुआत सोवियत संघ के समय से हुई थी।
उन्होंने कहा कि रणनीतिक स्वायत्तता की नीति पर चलते हुए भारत ने दोनों देशों के साथ संतुलित संबंध बनाए रखे हैं और यही वजह है कि रूसी राष्ट्रपति व्लादिमीर पुतिन प्रधानमंत्री मोदी की बात को गंभीरता से सुनते हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री मोदी उन कुछ वैश्विक नेताओं में शामिल हैं, जिनके पास राष्ट्रपति पुतिन पर सकारात्मक प्रभाव डालने की क्षमता है।
बार्तोशेव्स्की के अनुसार, यदि कोई देश युद्ध को समाप्त करने और शांति प्रक्रिया को आगे बढ़ाने में रचनात्मक भूमिका निभा सकता है, तो उसमें भारत का स्थान अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।
उप विदेश मंत्री ने वर्ष 2022 की उन परिस्थितियों का भी उल्लेख किया, जब युद्ध के परमाणु संघर्ष में बदलने की आशंकाएं बढ़ गई थीं।
उन्होंने कहा कि उस समय भारत ने लगातार संयम बरतने, तनाव कम करने और शांतिपूर्ण समाधान की वकालत की थी, जिसे अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सकारात्मक पहल के रूप में देखा गया।
इसी दौरान भारत ने ऑपरेशन गंगा चलाकर युद्धग्रस्त यूक्रेन में फंसे हजारों भारतीय छात्रों को सुरक्षित स्वदेश वापस लाया था। यह अभियान भारत के सबसे बड़े मानवीय निकासी अभियानों में से एक माना जाता है और इसकी व्यापक सराहना भी हुई थी।
उधर, रूसी राष्ट्रपति व्लादिमीर पुतिन ने हाल ही में भारत को “महान देश” बताते हुए उसकी स्वतंत्र विदेश नीति की खुलकर प्रशंसा की थी। उनके ये बयान ऐसे समय आए, जब रूस से कच्चे तेल की खरीद और व्यापारिक संबंधों को लेकर भारत और अमेरिका के बीच मतभेद बने हुए हैं।
भारत पर रूस के साथ सहयोग सीमित करने के लिए दबाव बनाने की कोशिशों की आलोचना करते हुए पुतिन ने कहा कि इस प्रकार की नीतियां न केवल द्विपक्षीय संबंधों बल्कि व्यापक अंतरराष्ट्रीय सहयोग के लिए भी नुकसानदायक हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि प्रत्येक संप्रभु राष्ट्र को अपने राष्ट्रीय हितों और आर्थिक आवश्यकताओं के अनुरूप निर्णय लेने का पूरा अधिकार है।
सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग अंतरराष्ट्रीय आर्थिक मंच में मीडिया से बातचीत के दौरान पुतिन ने कहा कि रूस भारत के दुनिया के विभिन्न देशों के साथ मजबूत होते संबंधों का स्वागत करता है।
उन्होंने कहा कि भारत अपनी आर्थिक प्रगति और राष्ट्रीय हितों को ध्यान में रखते हुए जिन देशों के साथ सहयोग बढ़ाना उचित समझता है, उसके लिए ऐसा करना पूरी तरह स्वाभाविक है।
