Prayagraj Tragedy: Twin Child Deaths Near Village Pond Take Dramatic Turn as Family Alleges Murder
By BK Singh
A case initially believed to be an accidental drowning in Prayagraj’s Tharwai police station area has taken a dramatic turn after the family of two deceased children accused four residents of murder.
The incident occurred in Katiyahi village, where the bodies of an 11-year-old girl and her nine-year-old brother were discovered near a pond on Sunday morning.
While early reports suggested that the siblings may have drowned, the children’s mother later filed a police complaint alleging that they were brutally assaulted and killed before being thrown into the water.
The deceased children, Madhu (11) and Sachin (9), were the daughter and son of Avdhesh Kumar Yadav, a resident of Sarai Ismail village in the Utraon police station area. Avdhesh had been living with his family at his in-laws’ home in Katiyahi village.
According to family members, the children had gone towards the village pond on Sunday morning. A short while later, information reached the family that both children were lying dead near the water body.
The family has accused village resident Jagdish Kumar Kahar and his three sons—Santosh Kumar, Kallu, and Nanku—of attacking the children before throwing them into the pond. Relatives allege that after the children died, the accused removed the bodies from the water and fled the scene.
Avdhesh Yadav claimed that his cousin-in-law, Shivmangal, witnessed the alleged assault and saw the accused beating the children before throwing them into the pond.
This statement became the basis for the family’s demand for immediate legal action against the accused.
Tensions escalated in the village as news of the incident spread. According to reports, angry villagers hurled stones at a police vehicle while the suspects were being taken away.
The situation became increasingly volatile, prompting authorities to deploy personnel from several police stations across the Gangapar region to restore order and prevent further unrest.
Villagers staged protests and demanded the immediate arrest of Jagdish Kumar Kahar and his sons. They also called for the pond to be filled in, claiming it had become a source of repeated concern for residents.
Following a written complaint submitted by Avdhesh Yadav, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against all four accused individuals and took them into custody for questioning.
The situation gradually calmed after local leaders, including MLA Geeta Pasi and former MLA Vijay Yadav, intervened and persuaded the grieving family members and villagers to cooperate with the investigation.
The family eventually agreed to allow authorities to proceed with the necessary formalities involving the bodies.
Tharwai Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Pandey confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Police officials are examining all aspects of the case, including the allegations made by the family and statements from witnesses, to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two children.
The shocking deaths of the young siblings have sparked outrage across the area, with residents demanding swift justice and a thorough probe into the incident.
Authorities have assured that all evidence will be examined carefully before further action is taken.
