Prayagraj Tragedy: Two Brothers Drown in Ganga at Mungiya Ghat, Cousins Rescued After Narrow Escape

Prayagraj: A heartbreaking tragedy struck a family in Prayagraj on Tuesday morning when two young brothers drowned while bathing in the Ganga River at Mungiya Ghat in the Naini-Karchana area.

Two of their cousins, who were with them at the time, narrowly escaped the incident. The sudden loss has left the family and the local community in deep mourning.

According to police, the victims were identified as Rajan Yadav (15) and his younger brother Abhishek (13), residents of Gadalpur village under the Bara police station limits.

The brothers had gone to the river early in the morning to take a bath. Accompanying them was their cousin brother, Pankaj (19), son of Harishankar.

While bathing, the children unknowingly moved towards a deeper section of the river. Seeing the youngsters struggling in the water, Pankaj immediately rushed to help them.

He managed to pull two children to safety, preventing what could have been an even greater tragedy.

However, Rajan and Abhishek were swept into deeper waters and disappeared.

As news of the incident spread, panic gripped the riverbank. Residents and family members gathered at the spot and launched a desperate search operation.

Villagers worked alongside authorities to locate the missing boys, while anxious relatives waited for any sign of hope.

After nearly an hour of searching, rescuers recovered the bodies of the two brothers from the river.

They were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Karchana, where doctors examined them and declared them dead. The confirmation of their deaths plunged the family into grief and sent shockwaves through their village.

Karchana ACP Manoj Kumar Singh said the police completed the necessary legal formalities following the incident.

Although arrangements were made for a post-mortem examination, family members reportedly declined and requested that the bodies be handed over to them for the last rites.

The tragedy has been particularly painful for the bereaved family, as both victims were school-going children with bright futures ahead of them.

According to relatives, Rajan was a Class 8 student, while Abhishek studied in Class 6. Their untimely deaths have left an irreplaceable void in the lives of their loved ones.

The incident serves as another grim reminder of the dangers posed by deep and unpredictable river currents, especially during bathing activities.

Residents of the area have called for greater awareness and enhanced safety measures at river ghats to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
