Putin, Trump Greet PM Modi on 76th Birthday Amid US-Russia Oil Tensions
Russian leader praises Modi’s role in strengthening bilateral ties, while Trump sends health and happiness wishes.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received birthday greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on Thursday, with messages from both leaders coming at a time of heightened discussion over India’s purchases of Russian energy.
The greetings were shared publicly by the Russian and US diplomatic missions in India.
While Putin used the occasion to highlight the depth of India-Russia relations, the message issued on Trump’s behalf was brief and focused on Modi’s well-being in the year ahead.
Putin praised Modi’s standing both in India and internationally and credited the Prime Minister with playing an important role in developing what Moscow describes as a special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Russian president also referred to his recent visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, expressing appreciation for the welcome extended to him and the Russian delegation.
He described his discussions with Modi as substantive and productive, and said the two leaders had again demonstrated the value of their political dialogue.
Putin further conveyed his intention to maintain cooperation with India on bilateral as well as international matters, stressing the importance of continuing constructive engagement between the two countries.
The birthday message from Washington came against a more complicated backdrop in India-US relations.
The US House of Representatives on September 16 passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 by 262 votes to 159. The legislation now goes to President Trump.
Among its provisions is authority for the US president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and gas.
India and China are among the major buyers potentially affected by the measure.
The legislation also contains sanctions targeting Russian energy and financial interests.
India has said it will continue to safeguard its energy security and protect its trade and economic interests while monitoring developments.
The External Affairs Ministry has also indicated that New Delhi is pursuing diversified sources of energy based on market conditions.
The contrasting circumstances surrounding the two birthday messages underline the complex international environment in which New Delhi is managing its relationships with both Moscow and Washington.
Prime Minister Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, to Damodardas Modi and Hiraben Modi.
To mark his birthday, the Bharatiya Janata Party is conducting the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, a month-long programme running from September 17 to October 17.
The campaign includes service activities, welfare initiatives and public outreach programmes across the country.

दोनों बधाइयां ऐसे समय आई हैं जब रूस से भारत की ऊर्जा खरीद को लेकर अमेरिका में नई नीतिगत पहल चर्चा में है।
रूसी राष्ट्रपति का संदेश भारत और रूस के बीच संबंधों पर केंद्रित रहा।
पुतिन ने प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के भारत में सम्मान और वैश्विक स्तर पर उनके प्रभाव का उल्लेख करते हुए द्विपक्षीय रणनीतिक साझेदारी को मजबूत करने में उनकी भूमिका की सराहना की।

रूसी राष्ट्रपति के मुताबिक, मोदी के साथ उनकी बातचीत सार्थक और स्पष्ट रही। उन्होंने दोनों देशों के बीच राजनीतिक संवाद को आगे बढ़ाने और आपसी सहयोग को जारी रखने की प्रतिबद्धता भी दोहराई।
पुतिन ने भारत और रूस के बीच द्विपक्षीय तथा अंतरराष्ट्रीय मुद्दों पर सहयोग आगे बढ़ाने की इच्छा व्यक्त की।
उनका संदेश ऐसे समय आया है जब दोनों देशों के बीच ऊर्जा, व्यापार और रणनीतिक सहयोग लगातार महत्वपूर्ण बना हुआ है।
वहीं, अमेरिका की ओर से भेजा गया जन्मदिन संदेश अपेक्षाकृत संक्षिप्त रहा। राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप की ओर से प्रधानमंत्री मोदी को स्वास्थ्य और आने वाले वर्ष में खुशहाली की शुभकामनाएं दी गईं।
हालांकि, यह बधाई ऐसे समय आई है जब रूस से तेल और गैस खरीदने वाले देशों पर अमेरिकी दबाव बढ़ा है।
