Sheikh Hasina Signals Return to Bangladesh, Calls for Restoration of Democracy

Former prime minister criticises Tarique Rahman’s government, warns of shrinking democratic freedoms and questions Dhaka’s decision to skip the BRICS summit in India.

NEW DELHI/DHAKA: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has linked her prospective return to her homeland with a broader campaign to restore democratic governance, uphold the rule of law and ensure that citizens can exercise their voting rights without fear or interference.

In an interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI), Hasina accused the government led by Tarique Rahman of presiding over a serious national crisis.

She alleged that democratic freedoms had been severely curtailed and that forces she described as extremist were once again gaining influence in Bangladesh.

Hasina maintained that the country’s political future should be determined by its citizens through elections that are free, fair and inclusive.

She portrayed her return not merely as a personal decision but as part of an effort to restore what she considers the people’s rightful control over the country’s democratic institutions.

“I want to stand beside the people of Bangladesh, fight for their rights, and help restore democracy, security and development,” she told PTI.

Hasina has been living at an undisclosed location in India since leaving Bangladesh during the mass uprising of July 2024 that brought an end to her rule. Her possible return has remained a subject of considerable political and legal uncertainty.

In September, she indicated that she was preparing to return and face imprisonment if necessary.

However, she stressed that the manner and circumstances of her return would have to safeguard the interests of Bangladesh and its people.

The prospect has drawn attention to the legal proceedings against her and the potential risks she could face if she goes back.

Her remarks also touched on Bangladesh’s relations with India and its engagement with emerging international economic groupings.

Criticising the decision by the Tarique Rahman government to stay away from the BRICS summit hosted in India, Hasina described the move as immature and contrary to Bangladesh’s national interests.

According to the former prime minister, participation in the summit could have created avenues for deeper economic cooperation and opened up opportunities for social and developmental progress.

She argued that diplomatic decisions should be guided by long-term national priorities rather than personal grievances or immediate political considerations.

Bangladesh, she said, needed a foreign policy that was balanced, self-assured and guided by strategic judgement.

The circumstances surrounding Hasina’s possible return remain uncertain. Her political opponents, the cases pending against her and the volatile political environment have raised questions about what might happen if she returns.

Her statements, meanwhile, indicate that she continues to present herself as a political figure seeking a role in Bangladesh’s future.

Whether she will return, when she might do so, and under what legal and security arrangements remain unresolved questions.

For her supporters, the next move could prove consequential for both Hasina’s political future and Bangladesh’s already contested political landscape.
