Three Tankers Attacked in Strait of Hormuz as Regional Tensions Escalate, Global Shipping on High Alert
Three commercial tankers came under attack in and around the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, triggering fresh concerns over the security of one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessels were targeted in separate incidents involving projectiles and an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone).
One tanker caught fire after being struck, another sustained structural damage, while a third vessel suffered minor damage but remained operational. No casualties were reported in any of the incidents.
The UKMTO stated that the first two attacks occurred near the Omani coastline while the ships were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
One vessel was engulfed in flames after being hit, whereas the second reported damage to its structure.
Later, maritime authorities confirmed that a third commercial tanker had also been struck by a drone.
Although the vessel sustained limited damage, its crew escaped unharmed and it continued its voyage without interruption.
Following the attacks, maritime safety agencies advised all merchant ships operating in the region to remain on maximum alert and immediately report any suspicious activity while navigating the strategic waterway.
Security experts warned that the latest incidents could further heighten risks for international shipping in the Gulf region.
The attacks have taken place amid rising tensions over navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but strategically vital sea corridor connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
Nearly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass through this route, making any disruption a matter of global economic significance.
According to reports, Iranian state television, citing unnamed sources, claimed that a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker identified as Al Rekayyat was targeted after allegedly ignoring warnings issued by Iran while transporting LNG from Qatar.
However, Iranian authorities did not officially accept responsibility for the strike, leaving the circumstances surrounding the attack disputed.
Qatar strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of international law and a direct threat to global energy security.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari stated that Doha considers Iran legally responsible for the attack and called the incident an unacceptable assault on international maritime commerce.
The latest developments follow repeated warnings from Iranian military authorities, who have insisted that commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz should use navigation routes approved by Tehran.
Iranian officials have also cautioned that any interference by United States forces in the region would invite an immediate response.
Despite the heightened tensions, the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), a multinational maritime security body overseen by the US Navy, informed shipping companies that an expanded navigation corridor close to Oman’s coastline remains open and available for international commercial traffic.
Maritime intelligence firm Kpler estimated that more than 100 commercial vessels successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend using different approved routes, highlighting the continued strategic importance of the waterway despite mounting security concerns.
The incidents have unfolded at a time when diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States remains uncertain.
Addressing reporters at the White House on Monday, US President Donald Trump reiterated his preference for resolving differences through negotiations but warned that Washington retained significant military options if diplomatic efforts failed.
Recognised as one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz serves as the principal gateway for crude oil and natural gas exports from major Gulf producers.
Any disruption to commercial shipping through this narrow passage can quickly affect international energy markets, fuel prices and global supply chains, making attacks on merchant vessels a matter of worldwide concern.

नई दिल्ली: दुनिया के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण समुद्री व्यापारिक मार्गों में शामिल हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य में मंगलवार को तीन व्यावसायिक टैंकरों पर हुए अलग-अलग हमलों ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुद्री सुरक्षा को लेकर नई चिंता पैदा कर दी है।
यूनाइटेड किंगडम मैरीटाइम ट्रेड ऑपरेशंस (UKMTO) के अनुसार इन जहाजों को प्रोजेक्टाइल और ड्रोन के जरिए निशाना बनाया गया। एक टैंकर में आग लग गई, दूसरे को संरचनात्मक क्षति पहुंची, जबकि तीसरे जहाज को मामूली नुकसान हुआ और वह अपनी यात्रा जारी रखने में सफल रहा।
तीनों घटनाओं में किसी भी व्यक्ति के हताहत होने की सूचना नहीं है।
यूकेएमटीओ के अनुसार शुरुआती दो हमले ओमान के तट के निकट हुए, जब दोनों टैंकर हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य से गुजर रहे थे। इनमें से एक जहाज पर प्रहार होने के बाद आग लग गई, जबकि दूसरे जहाज के बाहरी ढांचे को नुकसान पहुंचा। बाद में एजेंसी ने पुष्टि की कि तीसरे व्यावसायिक टैंकर को ड्रोन से निशाना बनाया गया।
हालांकि जहाज को सीमित क्षति हुई और चालक दल सुरक्षित रहा। इसके बाद भी जहाज ने अपनी यात्रा जारी रखी।
घटनाओं के बाद समुद्री सुरक्षा एजेंसियों ने इस क्षेत्र से गुजरने वाले सभी व्यापारी जहाजों को अत्यधिक सतर्क रहने और किसी भी संदिग्ध गतिविधि की तत्काल सूचना देने की सलाह दी है। विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि इन हमलों के बाद खाड़ी क्षेत्र में अंतरराष्ट्रीय नौवहन के सामने सुरक्षा जोखिम और बढ़ सकते हैं।
यह घटनाक्रम ऐसे समय सामने आया है जब हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य में नौवहन अधिकारों को लेकर क्षेत्रीय तनाव पहले से बना हुआ है। फारस की खाड़ी को ओमान की खाड़ी से जोड़ने वाला यह संकरा समुद्री मार्ग वैश्विक ऊर्जा आपूर्ति की जीवनरेखा माना जाता है।
दुनिया के समुद्री मार्ग से होने वाले कच्चे तेल और तरलीकृत प्राकृतिक गैस (एलएनजी) के लगभग 20 प्रतिशत निर्यात का आवागमन इसी रास्ते से होता है। ऐसे में यहां किसी भी प्रकार का व्यवधान पूरी वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्था को प्रभावित कर सकता है।
रिपोर्टों के अनुसार ईरान के सरकारी टेलीविजन ने सूत्रों के हवाले से दावा किया कि अल रेकय्यात (Al Rekayyat) नामक कतर के एलएनजी टैंकर को इसलिए निशाना बनाया गया क्योंकि उसने कथित तौर पर ईरानी चेतावनियों की अनदेखी करते हुए कतर की गैस लेकर यात्रा जारी रखी।
हालांकि ईरानी सरकार ने आधिकारिक रूप से इस हमले की जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार नहीं की है।
कतर ने इस हमले की कड़ी निंदा करते हुए इसे अंतरराष्ट्रीय कानून का गंभीर उल्लंघन और वैश्विक ऊर्जा सुरक्षा पर सीधा हमला बताया। विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता माजिद अल-अंसारी ने कहा कि कतर इस हमले के लिए ईरान को कानूनी रूप से जिम्मेदार मानता है।
इन घटनाओं से पहले ईरान की सेना बार-बार यह चेतावनी दे चुकी है कि हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य से गुजरने वाले व्यावसायिक जहाज केवल तेहरान द्वारा स्वीकृत समुद्री मार्गों का ही उपयोग करें।
ईरानी अधिकारियों ने यह भी कहा है कि यदि इस क्षेत्र में अमेरिकी सेना ने किसी प्रकार का हस्तक्षेप किया तो उसका तत्काल जवाब दिया जाएगा।
हालांकि अमेरिकी नौसेना की निगरानी में काम करने वाले जॉइंट मैरीटाइम इंफॉर्मेशन सेंटर (JMIC) ने शिपिंग कंपनियों को सूचित किया है कि ओमान के तट के निकट विकसित वैकल्पिक नौवहन मार्ग अंतरराष्ट्रीय जहाजों के लिए अब भी खुला हुआ है और वहां से सुरक्षित आवाजाही जारी रखी जा सकती है।
समुद्री विश्लेषण कंपनी क्लेपर (Kpler) के अनुसार सप्ताहांत में 100 से अधिक जहाज अलग-अलग स्वीकृत मार्गों का उपयोग करते हुए हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य से सफलतापूर्वक गुजर चुके हैं।
इससे स्पष्ट है कि सुरक्षा चुनौतियों के बावजूद यह समुद्री मार्ग वैश्विक व्यापार के लिए अब भी अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण बना हुआ है।
यह घटनाक्रम ऐसे समय हुआ है जब ईरान और अमेरिका के बीच कूटनीतिक बातचीत का भविष्य अभी भी अनिश्चित बना हुआ है।
सोमवार को व्हाइट हाउस में अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप ने कहा कि उनकी पहली प्राथमिकता बातचीत के जरिए समाधान निकालना है, लेकिन यदि कूटनीति विफल रहती है तो अमेरिका के पास सैन्य विकल्प भी मौजूद हैं।
दुनिया के सबसे संवेदनशील समुद्री मार्गों में गिने जाने वाले हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य के जरिए खाड़ी के प्रमुख तेल और गैस उत्पादक देशों से वैश्विक ऊर्जा आपूर्ति होती है।
इसलिए इस मार्ग पर होने वाला कोई भी हमला या नौवहन में बाधा केवल क्षेत्रीय नहीं बल्कि अंतरराष्ट्रीय अर्थव्यवस्था, तेल की कीमतों और ऊर्जा आपूर्ति श्रृंखला पर व्यापक असर डाल सकती है।
