Tibetan Protester Dies After Self-Immolation Outside UN Headquarters in New York, Police Launch Investigation
New York: A Tibetan man protesting China’s control over Tibet died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday evening.
Authorities said the incident occurred near East 42nd Street and First Avenue, where emergency responders rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames within seconds.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The deceased was identified as Lobsang Rangzen, who had been living in the United States for nearly two decades.
According to people who knew him, he earned his livelihood as an Uber driver while remaining actively involved in the local Tibetan community.
Friends described him as someone who strongly believed in peaceful activism and consistently supported the cause of Tibetan freedom.
Investigators reviewing surveillance footage said the video shows Rangzen placing a Tibetan national flag on the pavement before carrying out the act.
Emergency personnel reached him in approximately 15 seconds and used fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
Despite the quick response, he suffered critical burn injuries and was later declared dead at Bellevue Hospital, officials said.
A witness from New Jersey, who was present near the location, recalled noticing smoke before seeing flames engulf the man.
He praised United Nations security personnel for responding immediately but said the injuries appeared to be extremely severe by the time assistance reached the victim.
Speaking to local media, Lobsang Paljor, a friend and fellow Uber driver, said he had known Rangzen through New York’s Tibetan community.
He described him as a committed advocate of non-violent protest who remained deeply dedicated to the aspiration of a free Tibet throughout his life.
According to Voice of Tibet, a media organisation run by Tibetans living in exile, activist Logba Rangzen carried out the self-immolation outside the UN headquarters after making a public appeal for Tibetan independence and unity. Authorities have not publicly commented on this account.
Police also recovered pamphlets scattered around the scene carrying the slogan “China Out of Tibet,” a phrase widely associated with the Tibetan independence movement.
Investigators are examining all material recovered from the site as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the history of self-immolation protests linked to Tibet.
According to advocacy organisation Free Tibet, more than 150 Tibetans have reportedly set themselves on fire since March 2009 in protest against Chinese rule.
The organisation says many protesters have demanded the return of the Dalai Lama and called for greater political, religious and cultural freedoms in Tibet.
The Tibetan flag displayed during Thursday’s protest is associated with the failed 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, after which the Tibetan government-in-exile was established in northern India, according to Anadolu Agency.
China does not recognise the government-in-exile and maintains that Tibet has been an integral part of the country since the 13th century. The Dalai Lama, however, has maintained that Tibet functioned independently before Chinese forces entered the region in 1951.
China assumed control of Tibet in 1951, describing the move as a “peaceful liberation.” The issue remains one of the most sensitive and contested subjects in international politics, with sharply differing historical and political narratives presented by Beijing and Tibetan groups.
Police officials said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and authorities are continuing to examine evidence collected from the scene.

न्यूयॉर्क: तिब्बत पर चीन के नियंत्रण के विरोध में प्रदर्शन कर रहे एक तिब्बती व्यक्ति की गुरुवार शाम मैनहैटन स्थित संयुक्त राष्ट्र मुख्यालय के बाहर आत्मदाह करने के बाद मौत हो गई।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार घटना ईस्ट 42वीं स्ट्रीट और फर्स्ट एवेन्यू के पास हुई, जहां सूचना मिलते ही आपातकालीन दल मौके पर पहुंचा और कुछ ही सेकंड में आग बुझा दी। गंभीर रूप से झुलसे व्यक्ति को अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां उपचार के दौरान उसकी मृत्यु हो गई। पुलिस ने पूरे मामले की जांच शुरू कर दी है।
मृतक की पहचान लोबसांग रंगज़ेन (Lobsang Rangzen) के रूप में हुई है। बताया गया कि वह लगभग 20 वर्षों से अमेरिका में रह रहे थे और जीविका के लिए उबर चालक के रूप में काम करते थे। उनके परिचितों के अनुसार वह स्थानीय तिब्बती समुदाय से सक्रिय रूप से जुड़े हुए थे और तिब्बत की आजादी के मुद्दे पर शांतिपूर्ण आंदोलन के समर्थक थे।
जांच अधिकारियों द्वारा देखे गए सीसीटीवी फुटेज में कथित तौर पर रंगज़ेन को पहले सड़क किनारे तिब्बती ध्वज रखते और उसके बाद स्वयं को आग लगाते हुए देखा गया।
आपातकालीन कर्मी लगभग 15 सेकंड के भीतर मौके पर पहुंच गए और अग्निशामक यंत्रों की मदद से आग पर काबू पा लिया। इसके बावजूद वह गंभीर रूप से झुलस चुके थे और बाद में बेलव्यू अस्पताल में डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया।
घटनास्थल पर मौजूद न्यू जर्सी के एक प्रत्यक्षदर्शी ने बताया कि पहले उन्हें धुआं दिखाई दिया और कुछ ही क्षण बाद आग की लपटें नजर आईं। उन्होंने संयुक्त राष्ट्र के सुरक्षा अधिकारियों की त्वरित कार्रवाई की सराहना की, लेकिन कहा कि सहायता पहुंचने तक पीड़ित की हालत बेहद गंभीर हो चुकी थी।
स्थानीय मीडिया से बातचीत में रंगज़ेन के मित्र और सहकर्मी उबर चालक लोबसांग पालजोर ने बताया कि वे न्यूयॉर्क के तिब्बती समुदाय के माध्यम से एक-दूसरे को जानते थे। उनके अनुसार रंगज़ेन अहिंसक आंदोलन के प्रति पूरी तरह समर्पित थे और जीवनभर स्वतंत्र तिब्बत के उद्देश्य का समर्थन करते रहे।
निर्वासित तिब्बतियों के मीडिया मंच ‘वॉयस ऑफ तिब्बत’ ने दावा किया कि तिब्बती कार्यकर्ता लोगबा रंगज़ेन (Logba Rangzen) ने तिब्बती स्वतंत्रता और एकता की अपील करने के बाद संयुक्त राष्ट्र मुख्यालय के बाहर आत्मदाह किया।
हालांकि इस दावे पर अधिकारियों की ओर से अभी कोई आधिकारिक टिप्पणी नहीं की गई है।
पुलिस को घटनास्थल से कुछ पर्चे भी मिले, जिन पर “China Out of Tibet” लिखा हुआ था। यह नारा तिब्बती स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन से जुड़ा माना जाता है। जांच एजेंसियां घटनास्थल से बरामद सभी दस्तावेजों और अन्य साक्ष्यों की जांच कर रही हैं।
इस घटना ने एक बार फिर तिब्बत में आत्मदाह आंदोलनों की ओर ध्यान आकर्षित किया है। अधिकार संगठन फ्री तिब्बत (Free Tibet) के अनुसार मार्च 2009 से अब तक 150 से अधिक लोगों ने चीन के शासन के विरोध में कथित तौर पर आत्मदाह किया है।
संगठन का कहना है कि इन प्रदर्शनों के दौरान कई लोगों ने दलाई लामा की वापसी तथा तिब्बत में अधिक राजनीतिक, धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक स्वतंत्रता की मांग की थी।
गुरुवार के प्रदर्शन में इस्तेमाल किया गया तिब्बती ध्वज वर्ष 1959 में चीनी शासन के खिलाफ हुए असफल विद्रोह से जुड़ा प्रतीक माना जाता है। अनादोलु एजेंसी के अनुसार उसी विद्रोह के बाद उत्तरी भारत में तिब्बती निर्वासित सरकार का गठन हुआ था।
चीन इस निर्वासित सरकार को मान्यता नहीं देता और उसका कहना है कि तिब्बत 13वीं शताब्दी से चीन का हिस्सा रहा है। दूसरी ओर दलाई लामा का कहना है कि 1951 में चीनी सेना के प्रवेश से पहले तिब्बत स्वतंत्र रूप से संचालित होता था।
चीन ने वर्ष 1951 में तिब्बत पर नियंत्रण स्थापित किया था और उस कार्रवाई को उस समय “शांतिपूर्ण मुक्ति” बताया था। तिब्बत का प्रश्न आज भी अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सबसे संवेदनशील और विवादित मुद्दों में शामिल है, जिस पर चीन और तिब्बती पक्षों के अलग-अलग ऐतिहासिक और राजनीतिक दृष्टिकोण हैं।
पुलिस अधिकारियों ने बताया कि मामले की विस्तृत जांच जारी है और घटनास्थल से जुटाए गए सभी साक्ष्यों का वैज्ञानिक विश्लेषण किया जा रहा है।
