UN Hearing Erupts Into Heated Exchange as Israeli Envoy Clashes With Officials Over Reports Blacklisting Israel
In a rare and dramatic breach of diplomatic protocol, a public hearing at the United Nations witnessed an intense verbal confrontation between Israel’s ambassador and senior UN officials over reports that have placed Israel on UN blacklists for alleged rights violations.
The extraordinary exchange unfolded in full public view, exposing deep divisions between Israel and sections of the United Nations leadership.
The heated disagreement began during a meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.
What started as a criticism of a UN report quickly escalated into a shouting match involving multiple officials.
The dispute centred around reports prepared by senior UN representatives that listed Israel for alleged violations.
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, demanded the resignation of UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, whose report included Israel on a blacklist for alleged sexual abuses for the first time.
Accusing Patten of prejudice and unfair treatment, Danon alleged that she had succumbed to what he described as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ persistent focus on Israel.
Addressing Patten during the meeting, the Israeli envoy said she had given in to the secretary-general’s “obsession with targeting Israel.”
The latest confrontation comes amid increasingly strained relations between Israel and the United Nations leadership.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has already announced that it intends to cut off all ties with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose second term in office is scheduled to conclude later this year after a decade at the helm of the global body.
As Danon continued his criticism, another senior UN official, Vanessa Frazier, intervened by raising a point of order.
Frazier, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict and Malta’s former ambassador to the United Nations, urged the Israeli envoy to avoid personal attacks against UN officials.
Frazier also defended the findings of her report, stating that its conclusions were based on verified evidence and careful examination.
She had recently released a separate report on behalf of the UN secretary-general, which also included Israel on a blacklist and warned that Israeli settler groups could potentially be added to a global list of parties responsible for violations against children.
Her intervention further intensified the exchange. In a sharp response, Danon told Frazier to remain silent, emphasising that Israel was a sovereign member state of the United Nations while she was an employee of the organisation. He also described her report as “shameful.”
“We are a member state, and you work for the UN, and you will be quiet now,” Danon said during the heated proceedings, rejecting the findings contained in her report.
Israel already appears in the report’s so-called “shame annexes”, sections that list parties accused of committing grave violations against children during armed conflicts.
The confrontation unfolded even as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed alarm over what he described as a “staggering” increase in violations against Palestinian children.
Danon, however, characterised the reports produced by both Patten and Frazier as representing a “new low” in the UN’s approach towards Israel.
Notably, the reports prepared by both UN officials also include Hamas on their respective blacklists.
Nevertheless, Friday’s unprecedented exchange highlighted the growing tensions between Israel and the United Nations, with disagreements over accountability and conflict-related allegations increasingly spilling into the public domain.
