Uttar Pradesh to Revamp NCERT Textbooks with State-Specific Content and New Learning Material

Prayagraj: In a major academic reform initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government has begun updating NCERT textbooks to include content reflecting the state’s history, culture, geography and educational priorities.

The exercise is being carried out under the supervision of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and will cover classes from the primary to upper-primary levels.

Officials said the revised textbooks are being aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the latest recommendations of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The updated editions are expected to be introduced in schools from the upcoming academic sessions in a phased manner.

According to education department sources, revision work has already been completed for textbooks of Classes 1, 2 and 3, while the process of updating books for Classes 5 to 8 is currently underway.

Subject experts, academicians and curriculum specialists have been engaged in reviewing the content to ensure that it remains relevant, accurate and student-friendly.

The revised curriculum aims to make learning more connected to the local environment and cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh.

Educational content related to the state’s traditions, historical contributions, geographical features and social development will be appropriately incorporated into various subjects.

SCERT officials stated that the books are being redesigned in accordance with the learning needs and age-specific requirements of students.

Subjects such as Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Art Education and General Science are being reviewed to improve clarity, engagement and practical relevance.

A key feature of the initiative is the inclusion of newly developed chapters and learning material prepared specifically from the perspective of Uttar Pradesh.

These additions are intended to help students better understand their local surroundings while strengthening their connection with the state’s cultural and educational heritage.

Rajendra Pratap, Director of the State Educational Research and Training Institute, said that a newly developed environmental studies textbook prepared by a Delhi-based institution has been examined and its content has been incorporated where considered suitable.

The revised material is being adapted to meet the educational needs of students in Uttar Pradesh.

SCERT Institutions Also Undergoing Academic Updates

Alongside textbook revisions, educational institutions functioning under SCERT are also witnessing significant academic reforms.

Work is underway to update textbooks for Classes 6 to 8, with different state-level institutions contributing according to their areas of expertise.

The State Institute of Science Education has been entrusted with revising science textbooks, while the State Institute of Hindi is handling Hindi-language content.

Similarly, the State Institute of English Language Education is responsible for reviewing and updating English textbooks.

Officials said the revised books will be finalised after detailed scrutiny and approval processes.

The initiative is expected to modernise classroom learning, improve educational quality and provide students with a curriculum that is both nationally aligned and locally relevant.
