Uttarakhand Helicopter Crash: Bodies of All Six Victims Recovered, Families Await Mortal Remains
CHAMOLI: The recovery operation following Friday’s fatal helicopter crash in Uttarakhand has reached a significant milestone, with the mortal remains of all six victims recovered from the remote mountainous location near Joshimath.
The tragedy claimed the lives of five passengers from Karnataka and the aircraft’s pilot, turning what was meant to be a pilgrimage journey into a devastating loss for their families.
The helicopter, operated by Trans Bharat Aviation, crashed into a hillside near Chai village in Chamoli district on October 30 while travelling from Badrinath towards Dehradun. The accident occurred in the vicinity of Hathi Parvat, close to the Joshimath valley.
Although rescue personnel located all six bodies on Friday, darkness and the hazardous nature of the surrounding landscape prevented their immediate evacuation.
The operation was suspended for the night and resumed at 5 am on Saturday, with several emergency agencies working together to bring the remains out of the inaccessible area.
The Karnataka government confirmed on Saturday that the mortal remains of all six occupants had been recovered.
Officials said they were being transported towards Joshimath for post-mortem examinations, after which arrangements would be made to take them to Dehradun and subsequently facilitate their return to Karnataka.
A difficult rescue mission in the Himalayan wilderness
The recovery operation required rescuers to negotiate steep mountain paths, dense vegetation and areas where wild animals, including bears, had reportedly been sighted.
Teams approached the wreckage through difficult routes from the Pandukeshwar side.
The Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, police, Forest Department and Chamoli district administration participated in the operation.
Forest personnel were also deployed to assist with the recovery and ensure the safety of the teams.
Officials said transporting the bodies from the crash location to a motorable road was itself a demanding task. The remains were to be taken to Joshimath before being shifted for medical and post-mortem formalities.
Investigation into the cause of the crash
The circumstances surrounding the accident are now under investigation. The helicopter lost contact while flying through the Joshimath valley, and its location could not initially be established through the tracking system.
An Army Signal Centre team reportedly noticed smoke rising from the Hathi Parvat area and saw the aircraft descending rapidly, prompting an emergency response.
Weather conditions have emerged as an important aspect of the investigation. The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for Chamoli on October 30, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and strong winds of 40-50 kmph in isolated locations. Rain had also been forecast.
The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority said the helicopter had departed from Badrinath at approximately 1:14 pm, heading towards Sahastradhara in Dehradun.
Officials are examining the circumstances under which the flight was permitted to operate despite the weather warning.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered an investigation to establish the precise cause of the accident.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is also involved in examining the crash, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has dispatched a team to Dehradun for a preliminary assessment and regulatory review.
As a precaution, the state authorities have grounded the entire helicopter fleet operated by Trans Bharat Aviation.
Five friends who never returned from their pilgrimage
The five passengers had reportedly shared a close friendship and decided to undertake the Char Dham pilgrimage together. Their sudden deaths have left their families and acquaintances in profound grief.
The deceased have been identified as Arun Salunke, a police inspector associated with Bengaluru’s Central Crime Branch technical cell; Prathapa Bachihally Ningaraju, a businessman from Hassan; advocates Sudheer K and Shankargowda VB; and H S Nataraj from Tumakuru.
The pilot was identified in reports as Captain Himanshu.
Mahesh, a cooperative society secretary in Tumakuru, said he was particularly close to Shankargowda and Nataraj. He had also been invited to accompany the group but could not join because of work commitments.
He recalled that the friends generally shared photographs and updates on social media whenever they travelled together. Their absence from social media during this particular journey had left relatives without their usual updates.
For the families, the recovery of the mortal remains brings an end to the agonising uncertainty surrounding their loved ones, but the pain of losing them remains immeasurable.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns over the safety of helicopter operations in Uttarakhand’s mountainous pilgrimage corridors, where weather changes and difficult flying conditions can pose serious risks.
The findings of the investigation are expected to be crucial in determining what went wrong and whether additional safety measures are required.
