Vaibhav Studios, the country’s only animation house with an Emmy nomination, unveils teaser of ‘Return of the Jungle’ – a modern Panchatantra tale rooted in Indian soil.

The lights dimmed inside a small preview theatre in Mumbai. On screen, a leaf trembled.

Then a tiger inhaled. And somewhere in the back row, a veteran distributor who had spent forty years laughing at cartoon monkeys suddenly sat up straight.

He had just witnessed the teaser of ‘Return of the Jungle’ – a film that, without uttering a single sermon, reminded him why his grandmother’s stories never needed a remote control.

This is not just another animated feature. This is the return of Vaibhav Studios, India’s only Emmy-nominated animation studio.

The same house that gave the world the irrepressible ‘Lamput’ and the beloved ‘Simpoo’.

The same house whose founder, Vaibhav Kumaresh, has spent decades proving that Indian characters can travel across continents without losing their desi heartbeat.

‘Return of the Jungle’, or ‘ROTJ’ as the team affectionately calls it, began its journey not on a drawing board but inside a worn-out copy of the Panchatantra.

Vaibhav Kumaresh had been flipping through the ancient fables during a long flight.

A fox outsmarted a crocodile. A crow hatched a plan with a mongoose. And suddenly, the director realised that these tales were never children’s stories. They were survival manuals dressed in fur and feathers.

But the film is not a period piece. It is fiercely modern. The jungle in ‘Return of the Jungle’ deals with deforestation, fragmented families, and the kind of greed that does not roar but whispers in boardrooms.

Yet the treatment remains playful, colourful, and unmistakably Indian. A character does not just speak.

He argues like a chai stall philosopher. Another does not just fight. She negotiates like a village panchayat elder.

The international community took notice long before the domestic audience got its first glimpse. ‘Return of the Jungle’ was invited to the Cannes Film Market, where buyers from France, Japan, and Brazil lingered at the Vaibhav Studios stall.

They did not ask about technology or frame rates. They asked about the peacock. They asked about the old banyan tree. They asked what happened to the jackal.

Vaibhav Kumaresh, who has quietly become one of the most respected animation filmmakers in the world, refused every offer to relocate his studio overseas. ‘

The jungle I know grows only in this soil,’ he told his team during a late-night storyboard session. ‘If I move the roots, the story dies.’

The teaser, released without fanfare on a Tuesday morning, opens with a single shot: a watering hole reflecting a forest that exists only in memory. Then a cub steps forward.

Then the title appears – ‘Return of the Jungle’. And then the release date: 29 May 2026. Nationwide. Theatres. No streaming window announced. No compromise.

When a young journalist asked why a children’s animated film deserved a full theatrical release, a senior executive from Vaibhav Studios smiled and said, ‘Because children don’t ask for permission to dream.

And dreams deserve the biggest screen in town.’

‘Return of the Jungle’ is not a sequel. It is not a franchise starter. It is simply a modern-day Panchatantra for a generation that has forgotten how to listen to trees. And on 29 May 2026,

India’s only Emmy-nominated animation studio is betting that the jungle still has one roar left.
