Varanasi ATS Operation: ₹30 Lakh Bounty Naxal Commander Brijesh Ganjhu Killed
Police say the TPC commander was carrying firearms when an ATS team intercepted him in Ramnagar; two officers came under fire during the operation.
VARANASI: A wanted commander of the banned Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) was killed during an operation by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad in Varanasi early Sunday, police said, bringing an end to a search for a Jharkhand-based extremist who had a combined bounty of ₹30 lakh.
The man was identified as Brijesh Ganjhu, also known as Gopal Singh Bhokta, from Chatra district in Jharkhand.
He had been wanted in a large number of criminal cases and was among the suspects being pursued by security agencies, according to Uttar Pradesh Police.
The operation unfolded in the Ramnagar area, where an ATS team was acting on intelligence about Ganjhu’s movement.
Investigators said he was travelling by motorcycle with another person after leaving the Tegara crossing and was heading towards Mughalsarai.
Rather than allowing the interception to proceed, police allege that Ganjhu got off the motorcycle and opened fire at the approaching personnel.
The shooting triggered a retaliatory exchange in which the TPC commander was hit.
The encounter also placed members of the ATS team in danger.
Police said rounds fired during the confrontation struck the protective gear of Deputy Superintendent of Police Vipin Rai and Head Constable Nitendra Krishna.
Ganjhu was subsequently transported to a hospital. He was declared dead by doctors after being brought there, officials said.
Investigators said the operation yielded several weapons. The reported recovery included two pistols, a carbine and ammunition, though further details of the seized material were not immediately available.
The scale of the police operation reflected the significance attached to Ganjhu’s arrest.
The Jharkhand government had announced a ₹25 lakh reward for information resulting in his arrest, while the National Investigation Agency had separately placed a ₹5 lakh reward on him.
Together, the two rewards totalled ₹30 lakh.
According to UP ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash, Ganjhu had approximately 50 criminal cases against him.
Two of these cases were being investigated by the NIA, the officer said.
Yash also alleged that the slain TPC commander had been linked to attacks in which civilians and police personnel were killed.
The officer said authorities had begun efforts to trace other members of Ganjhu’s network following the operation.
The TPC is a banned Naxalite organisation with roots in Jharkhand.
Security agencies have continued to pursue its members as part of wider operations against Left-Wing Extremism.
The latest operation is now expected to be followed by further investigation into Ganjhu’s associates, their movements and any remaining organisational network, officials said.

वाराणसी: वाराणसी में रविवार तड़के उत्तर प्रदेश एंटी-टेररिस्ट स्क्वॉड (ATS) की कार्रवाई के दौरान प्रतिबंधित नक्सली संगठन तृतीय प्रस्तुति कमेटी (TPC) के एक वांछित कमांडर की मौत हो गई।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, मृतक की पहचान झारखंड के चतरा निवासी बृजेश गंझू उर्फ गोपाल सिंह भोक्ता के रूप में हुई है।
बृजेश लंबे समय से सुरक्षा एजेंसियों के निशाने पर था। पुलिस के अनुसार, उसकी गिरफ्तारी के लिए अलग-अलग एजेंसियों ने कुल ₹30 लाख का इनाम घोषित कर रखा था।
झारखंड सरकार की ओर से ₹25 लाख और राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी (NIA) की ओर से ₹5 लाख का इनाम घोषित था।
पुलिस अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, रविवार सुबह बृजेश के वाराणसी में होने की सूचना मिलने के बाद ATS ने उसकी गतिविधियों पर नजर रखी।
वह एक अन्य व्यक्ति के साथ मोटरसाइकिल पर सवार होकर टेंगरा चौराहे से मुगलसराय की तरफ जा रहा था।
रामनगर इलाके में टीम ने उसे रोकने की कोशिश की।
पुलिस का आरोप है कि गिरफ्तारी से बचने के लिए उसने बाइक छोड़ दी और जवानों पर गोलियां चला दीं। इसके बाद मौके पर गोलीबारी शुरू हो गई।
इस कार्रवाई में बृजेश को गोली लगी। पुलिस ने बताया कि मुठभेड़ के दौरान उसकी तरफ से चली गोलियां ATS के डिप्टी एसपी विपिन राय और हेड कांस्टेबल नितेंद्र कृष्ण की बुलेटप्रूफ जैकेट से भी टकराईं।
घायल बृजेश को पुलिस टीम अस्पताल लेकर गई, लेकिन वहां डॉक्टरों ने उसे मृत घोषित कर दिया।
मुठभेड़ के बाद पुलिस ने मौके से हथियार और गोला-बारूद बरामद करने की जानकारी दी। अधिकारियों के अनुसार, बरामद सामग्री में दो पिस्तौल और एक कार्बाइन शामिल हैं।
यूपी के एडीजी कानून-व्यवस्था अमिताभ यश के अनुसार, बृजेश के खिलाफ करीब 50 आपराधिक मामले दर्ज थे। इनमें दो मामलों की जांच NIA के स्तर पर चल रही थी।
एडीजी ने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि बृजेश का संबंध ऐसे हिंसक मामलों से रहा था जिनमें नागरिकों और पुलिसकर्मियों की जान गई थी।
उन्होंने कहा कि कार्रवाई के बाद अब बृजेश से जुड़े अन्य लोगों की तलाश तेज की जा रही है।
प्रतिबंधित TPC का संबंध झारखंड में सक्रिय नक्सली गतिविधियों से रहा है।
बृजेश की मौत के बाद सुरक्षा एजेंसियों का ध्यान अब उसके नेटवर्क से जुड़े लोगों और संगठन की संभावित बची हुई गतिविधियों की पड़ताल पर है।
पुलिस के अनुसार, मामले की आगे की जांच में मुठभेड़ से जुड़े तथ्यों के साथ-साथ बरामद हथियारों और बृजेश के कथित सहयोगियों की भूमिका की भी जांच की जाएगी।
