Moscow Drone Attack: Oil Refinery Damaged as Ukraine Launches Major Aerial Assault on Russian Capital
Russian officials said hundreds of drones were directed towards Moscow, with an oil-refinery facility damaged; the wider Moscow region also reported deaths and injuries.
MOSCOW: A large-scale drone assault targeted Moscow and the surrounding region on Sunday, with Russian authorities reporting damage to a facility at the Moscow Oil Refinery as the aerial attack unfolded.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the capital had come under an exceptionally heavy drone barrage and that air-defence systems had intercepted large numbers of incoming unmanned aircraft.
Russian officials said more than 1,600 drones had been brought down since Saturday, including about 450 that were heading towards Moscow.
The attack also reached the premises of the Moscow Oil Refinery, where a facility was damaged.
Sobyanin initially said there were no casualties at the refinery and that emergency crews had been sent to the site. Reuters witnesses later reported seeing smoke rising from the refinery area.
The consequences were more serious elsewhere in the Moscow region. Russian authorities subsequently reported two deaths and multiple injuries.
In the Ramenskoye district, a drone-related fire at a high-rise residential building led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
The scale of the assault coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, adding a politically sensitive dimension to the attack.
Sobyanin alleged that the strikes were intended to interfere with the voting process, although that claim has not been independently established. He said the attempt had failed.
Ukraine had not issued a formal statement accepting responsibility for the strikes in the initial reports.
Ukrainian authorities have previously described long-range attacks on Russian military and energy infrastructure as part of their effort to put pressure on Moscow during the war.
The Moscow refinery has been targeted before and is an important fuel-processing facility serving the capital and surrounding areas.
Reuters reported that the plant processed about 11.6 million tonnes of crude in 2024, underscoring its significance to the region’s fuel supply.
The latest attack comes amid a broader campaign in which Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck Russian energy infrastructure.
Several Russian refineries have suffered operational disruptions in recent months, contributing to pressure on the country’s domestic fuel market.
The drone barrage also unfolded against the backdrop of continuing Russian-Ukrainian attacks on energy facilities on both sides.
Russian authorities have repeatedly reported intercepting Ukrainian drones, while Ukraine has faced its own continuing aerial attacks from Russia.
The full extent of the damage at the Moscow refinery, including the effect on its operations, was not immediately clear. Authorities were continuing emergency and recovery work as reports of the attack emerged.
