Veteran Actor Nana Patekar Passes Away at 75 Due to Cardiac Arrest; Family Details Emerge

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, a towering force in Indian cinema for nearly five decades, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 75.

The actor, whose real name was Vishwanath Patekar, breathed his last after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa.

According to information gathered from multiple reports, Patekar experienced severe chest pain at his Goa home, following which a medical team was dispatched to his flat.

Upon arrival, he was found unconscious and was administered cardiac massage on the spot. He was subsequently rushed to a private hospital in Dona Paula, where the medical team declared him dead at approximately 5:20 AM.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted today to medically and legally ascertain the cause of death.

The family has not issued any official statement, though his son Malhar Patekar confirmed the news of his father’s passing.

The Reel Life: A Cinematic Titan. Born on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra, Patekar came from a family that knew hardship intimately.

His father, Dinkar Patekar, was a textile painter, and the household struggled financially. An alumnus of Mumbai’s Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, he entered the film industry through theatre and made his feature debut with ‘Gaman’ in 1978.

Patekar’s breakthrough came with ‘Parinda’ in 1989, where his portrayal of the psychotic underworld kingpin Anna earned him his first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He followed this with intense performances in ‘Angaar’ and ‘Apaharan’.
In 1994, his role as the fiery, principled common man in ‘Krantiveer’ won him the National Film Award for Best Actor.

He delivered a chillingly restrained performance as a relentless encounter specialist in ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’ (2004) and demonstrated remarkable comic timing as the theatrical crime boss Don Uday Shetty in the cult comedy ‘Welcome’ (2007).

His later career included the Marathi masterpiece ‘Natsamrat’ (2016), where his portrayal of a tragic, aging stage actor won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi).

He holds the rare distinction of being one of only two actors to win Filmfare Awards across the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Villain categories.

Despite amassing immense wealth and stardom, Patekar chose a lifestyle that rejected the luxury of typical film stars.

He spent his life avoiding an entourage or high-end luxury items, preferring to live in a modest apartment in Mumbai or retreating to his humble farmhouse near Pune.
His humanitarian focus was deeply personal. Having grown up in poverty and survived on one meal a day during his youth, his empathy translated into immediate, quiet action.

Reports note that Patekar quietly donated close to 90 percent of his earnings to social causes over the decades. When he won the prestigious Raj Kapoor Award, he immediately gave away the entire cash prize to drought relief.

A decorated honorary officer in the Territorial Army, Patekar went beyond cinematic projection to serve on the frontlines during the 1999 Kargil War.

He had undergone three years of rigorous commando training with the Maratha Light Infantry while preparing for his directorial debut, ‘Prahaar:

The Final Attack’ (1991). During the Kargil conflict, he secured special permission from then-Defence Minister George Fernandes to deploy to the high-altitude operational zone, serving alongside active troops as part of a Quick Response Team.

He lost 20 kilograms during his time at the front lines. He eventually earned the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In 2015, alongside fellow Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure, he formally established the Naam Foundation.

Co-founded in response to severe agricultural distress, the foundation has raised crores to build sustainable infrastructure for farmers in drought-hit Maharashtra.

It has provided substantial direct financial relief to the widows of farmers who succumbed to debt, actively rejuvenated rivers, built homes, and funded educational programs in rural villages.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in his condolence message, highlighted Patekar’s social work through the Naam Foundation, stating that the helping hand he extended to the families of farmers who committed suicide became a support for many families.

Patekar married actor and writer Neelkanti Patekar in 1978. The couple had two sons, but their first child, Durvasa, died at the age of two and a half due to health complications.

Their younger son, Malhar Patekar, is involved in filmmaking and has worked as an assistant director. He is also associated with his father’s philanthropy through the Naam Foundation.

Patekar and Neelkanti lived apart for decades while remaining legally married. In interviews, Patekar had spoken about their arrangement, saying they continued to meet even as they kept separate homes. They never formally divorced. He is survived by his wife Neelkanti, son Malhar, and brothers Ashok and Dilip Patekar.
