Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar Found Unresponsive in Office, Declared Dead at Agartala Hospital
Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, passed away on Sunday after he was found unresponsive inside his chamber at the state police headquarters in Agartala.
He was immediately shifted to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. He was 60.
According to Dr Pradip Bhowmik, Head of the Department of General Medicine at GBP Hospital, Dhankar was brought to the hospital at around noon.
Medical examination revealed no pulse, blood pressure, or respiratory activity. Doctors nevertheless carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to revive him, but he showed no signs of life and was declared dead at 12.48 pm.
Hospital authorities said the precise cause of death could not be determined immediately.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact reason behind his death.
State Health Secretary Kiran Dinkarrao Gitte confirmed that the DGP was found inside his office chamber at the police headquarters before being rushed to the hospital for emergency medical care.
Following the incident, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home and Health portfolios, reached the state police headquarters and reviewed the situation with senior police officers.
He later left the premises without interacting with the media.
Dhankar had completed his regular tenure as Director General of Police in June this year.
However, in accordance with the Tripura Police Act and judicial provisions relating to the tenure of state police chiefs, he continued to serve under an extended term of nearly eleven months.
Throughout his distinguished career, the 1994-batch IPS officer held several important assignments, including DGP (Intelligence), Additional DGP and Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) between 2013 and 2016.
Before assuming charge as Tripura DGP in May 2025, he also served on central deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF).
His exemplary service earned him several prestigious honours, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Dhankar also represented India in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-04, reflecting his extensive experience in national and international policing.

अगरतला: त्रिपुरा के पुलिस महानिदेशक (डीजीपी) अनुराग धनकर, जो 1994 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी थे, का रविवार को अचानक निधन हो गया। वह राज्य पुलिस मुख्यालय स्थित अपने कार्यालय कक्ष में अचेत अवस्था में मिले।
उन्हें तत्काल गोविंद बल्लभ पंत (जीबीपी) अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां चिकित्सकों ने जांच के बाद उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया। वह 60 वर्ष के थे।
जीबीपी अस्पताल के जनरल मेडिसिन विभाग के प्रमुख डॉ. प्रदीप भौमिक ने बताया कि अनुराग धनकर को लगभग दोपहर 12 बजे अस्पताल लाया गया था। जांच के दौरान उनके शरीर में नाड़ी, रक्तचाप और श्वसन जैसी कोई जीवनरक्षक गतिविधि नहीं पाई गई।
चिकित्सकों ने उन्हें बचाने के लिए कार्डियोपल्मोनरी रिससिटेशन (सीपीआर) का पूरा प्रयास किया, लेकिन सफलता नहीं मिली। इसके बाद दोपहर 12 बजकर 48 मिनट पर उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया गया।
चिकित्सकों के अनुसार, फिलहाल मृत्यु के वास्तविक कारणों का पता नहीं चल सका है। इसकी पुष्टि के लिए शव को पोस्टमार्टम के लिए भेज दिया गया है।
राज्य के स्वास्थ्य सचिव किरण दिनकरराव गित्ते ने बताया कि डीजीपी अपने कार्यालय कक्ष में अचेत अवस्था में मिले थे। उन्हें तत्काल अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया, लेकिन चिकित्सक उन्हें बचा नहीं सके।
घटना की जानकारी मिलते ही मुख्यमंत्री डॉ. माणिक साहा, जिनके पास गृह और स्वास्थ्य विभाग का भी प्रभार है, राज्य पुलिस मुख्यालय पहुंचे। उन्होंने वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों से पूरे घटनाक्रम की जानकारी ली और स्थिति की समीक्षा की। बाद में वह बिना मीडिया से बातचीत किए वहां से रवाना हो गए।
अनुराग धनकर का नियमित कार्यकाल जून 2026 में पूरा हो चुका था। हालांकि, त्रिपुरा पुलिस अधिनियम और न्यायालयों के दिशा-निर्देशों के तहत राज्य के कार्यरत डीजीपी को अतिरिक्त अवधि तक सेवा जारी रखने का प्रावधान है। इसी व्यवस्था के तहत वह अपने पद पर कार्यरत थे।
अपने तीन दशक से अधिक लंबे पुलिस करियर में अनुराग धनकर ने कई महत्वपूर्ण जिम्मेदारियां निभाईं। मई 2025 में त्रिपुरा के डीजीपी बनने से पहले वह डीजीपी (इंटेलिजेंस), अतिरिक्त डीजीपी तथा 2013 से 2016 के दौरान पुलिस महानिरीक्षक (कानून एवं व्यवस्था) जैसे अहम पदों पर कार्य कर चुके थे।
केंद्रीय प्रतिनियुक्ति के दौरान उन्होंने केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो (सीबीआई) और सीमा सुरक्षा बल (बीएसएफ) में भी महत्वपूर्ण सेवाएं दीं।
उत्कृष्ट पुलिस सेवा के लिए अनुराग धनकर को पुलिस पदक (मेधावी सेवा) तथा राष्ट्रपति पुलिस पदक (विशिष्ट सेवा) सहित अनेक प्रतिष्ठित सम्मानों से सम्मानित किया गया था।
उन्होंने वर्ष 2003-04 के दौरान कोसोवो में संयुक्त राष्ट्र मिशन में भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व भी किया था, जो उनके व्यापक राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय अनुभव का परिचायक माना जाता है.
