12 Badaun Pilgrims Killed in Baghpat EPE Crash After Pickup Is Hit by Canter
Six died at the spot, and six others succumbed during treatment; 12 of the 20 injured are reported to be in critical condition
BAGHPAT: A religious trip from Badaun turned tragic on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Baghpat after a pickup carrying 32 pilgrims was struck from behind by a canter late Sunday night.
The collision sent the overloaded vehicle crashing into a divider before it overturned, leaving 12 people dead and 20 others injured.
The accident took place near the Baragaon toll plaza at around 12.30 am.
The force of the impact caused the pickup to topple, trapping several passengers underneath.
Six pilgrims died at the scene, while another six later lost their lives at hospitals during treatment.
The group had set out from Alahpur village under Ujhani police station in Badaun on September 2 for a religious journey.
After visiting Gogamedi Bagad Dham in Rajasthan, the pilgrims were on their way back home when the canter approaching from behind rammed into their pickup on the expressway.
People travelling on the route stopped after hearing the cries for help and rushed towards the wreckage.
With police assistance, the trapped and injured passengers were pulled out and taken to the district hospital.
Doctors there declared six people dead. Those requiring advanced medical care were subsequently shifted to hospitals in Meerut and Delhi.
The death toll rose further on Monday when six more injured pilgrims died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meerut.
Twelve other injured passengers are still said to be in serious condition.
The crash triggered an emergency response across the health and administrative machinery from Baghpat to Meerut.
As news of the tragedy spread, relatives of the deceased and injured travelled from Badaun to Baghpat and nearby hospitals.
Overloading raises serious road-safety concerns
The accident has also highlighted the dangers of carrying passengers beyond a vehicle’s permitted capacity.
The pickup reportedly had 32 people on board, including women and children. Makeshift wooden boards had been fitted inside the vehicle to create upper and lower seating arrangements, effectively turning the pickup into an improvised multi-level passenger carrier.
The scale of the tragedy has once again brought attention to the risks posed by overloading and makeshift modifications in vehicles travelling on highways, where even a single collision can have devastating consequences.

ईस्टर्न पेरिफेरल एक्सप्रेसवे पर रविवार देर रात कैंटर की टक्कर से 32 श्रद्धालुओं को लेकर जा रही पिकअप अनियंत्रित होकर डिवाइडर से जा भिड़ी और पलट गई।
दुर्घटना में छह लोगों ने मौके पर ही दम तोड़ दिया, जबकि उपचार के दौरान छह अन्य की मौत हो गई। हादसे में घायल 20 लोगों में से 12 की स्थिति गंभीर बताई जा रही है।
दुर्घटना बड़ागांव टोल प्लाजा के आसपास रात करीब साढ़े 12 बजे हुई।
टक्कर इतनी जबरदस्त थी कि पिकअप पलटने के बाद उसमें सवार कई लोग उसके नीचे दब गए। हादसे के बाद घटनास्थल पर चीख-पुकार मच गई।
रास्ते से गुजर रहे वाहन चालकों और आसपास मौजूद लोगों ने मदद के लिए रुककर पुलिस को सूचना दी।
बताया गया कि बदायूं के उझानी थाना क्षेत्र स्थित अलाहपुर गांव से 32 श्रद्धालु दो सितंबर को धार्मिक यात्रा के लिए निकले थे।
राजस्थान स्थित गोगामेड़ी बागड़ धाम में दर्शन करने के बाद सभी वापस बदायूं की ओर लौट रहे थे। इसी दौरान एक्सप्रेसवे पर पीछे से आए कैंटर ने पिकअप को जोरदार टक्कर मार दी।
सूचना मिलने पर पुलिस मौके पर पहुंची और स्थानीय लोगों की मदद से पिकअप में फंसे यात्रियों को बाहर निकाला।
घायलों को तत्काल जिला अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां चिकित्सकों ने छह श्रद्धालुओं को मृत घोषित कर दिया। गंभीर स्थिति वाले मरीजों को बेहतर उपचार के लिए मेरठ और दिल्ली के अस्पतालों में भेजा गया।
सोमवार को मेरठ में इलाज के दौरान छह और घायलों की मौत हो गई। इस तरह हादसे में जान गंवाने वालों की संख्या बढ़कर 12 हो गई। वहीं, 12 अन्य घायल श्रद्धालुओं की हालत गंभीर बनी हुई है और उनका उपचार जारी है।
हादसे की जानकारी मिलते ही बागपत से लेकर मेरठ तक प्रशासन और स्वास्थ्य विभाग में हलचल तेज हो गई।
दुर्घटना की खबर मिलने के बाद मृतकों और घायलों के परिवार वाले भी बदायूं से बागपत और संबंधित अस्पतालों तक पहुंचने लगे। परिजनों के पहुंचने के साथ ही अस्पतालों में भी लोगों की भीड़ बढ़ गई।
नियमों की अनदेखी ने बढ़ाया खतरा
इस हादसे ने यात्री वाहनों में क्षमता से अधिक लोगों को बैठाने और उनमें किए जाने वाले अस्थायी बदलावों को लेकर गंभीर सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं। पिकअप में महिलाओं और बच्चों समेत कुल 32 यात्री सवार थे। वाहन के भीतर फट्टों की मदद से ऊपर और नीचे बैठने की अस्थायी व्यवस्था बनाई गई थी।
एक मालवाहक वाहन को इस तरह यात्रियों से भरकर लंबी दूरी की यात्रा पर ले जाना कितना जोखिम भरा हो सकता है, हादसे ने इसकी भयावह तस्वीर सामने रख दी है। एक्सप्रेसवे जैसे तेज रफ्तार मार्ग पर ओवरलोडिंग और जुगाड़ से किए गए बदलाव दुर्घटना की स्थिति में नुकसान को कई गुना बढ़ा सकते हैं।
