Sadhana Singh: How ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ Turned an Unassuming Varanasi Girl into Forever-Gunja
Sadhana Singh became an enduring icon as Gunja in Rajshri Productions’ 1982 classic Nadiya Ke Paar. Know about her accidental Bollywood debut, career, family, and life beyond films.

Sadhana Singh never planned a career in films, but a chance visit to a Rajshri Productions set changed her life. Her portrayal of Gunja in the 1982 classic ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ made her one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring faces of rural innocence.
Some film characters fade with the passing of generations. Others become so deeply woven into popular memory that the actor’s real identity almost disappears behind them.
Sadhana Singh belongs firmly to the second category. More than 40 years after her debut, millions of viewers still remember her first and foremost as Gunja.
There was little in Singh’s early life to suggest that she would eventually become a familiar face on the big screen.
Born into a Rajput family in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, with family connections to Punjab, she grew up far removed from the conventional image of an aspiring film star.
She was athletic, enjoyed basketball,l and was known more for her tomboyish personality than any fascination with show business.
Cinema entered her life by accident. Singh had accompanied her sister Surinder Kaur, a classical dancer, to a Rajshri Productions shoot.
Director Govind Moonis noticed her natural appearance and unaffected personality during the visit.
What began as an ordinary trip to a film set ended with an unexpected offer to play the female lead.
That opportunity became ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’, released on January 1, 1982. Adapted from the first part of Keshav Prasad Mishra’s novel ‘Kohbar Ki Shart’, the film transported audiences into the rural landscape of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Its story revolved around Chandan, portrayed by Sachin Pilgaonkar, and Gunja, a young village woman whose relationship with him forms the emotional centre of the narrative.
Rajshri Productions found an extraordinary response to the film.
Its earthy setting, simple relationships, and emotional storytelling connected strongly with audiences, turning what might have appeared to be a modest rural drama into a major commercial success.
The film would later become an important source of inspiration for ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ released in 1994.
The music added another dimension to its appeal. Ravindra Jain’s compositions, including ‘Jogi Ji Dheere Dheere’ and ‘Kaun Disha Mein Leke Chala Re’, became enduring favourites and helped preserve the film’s emotional identity long after its theatrical run.
For Singh, the success came with a sudden transformation in public life.
Recognition arrived at a speed few newcomers experience. Large gatherings reportedly followed her public appearances, and police protection was sometimes required.
Yet the most striking measure of her popularity was the way Gunja ceased to be merely a screen character. For audiences, Sadhana Singh and Gunja became almost inseparable.
Behind the success of the film was also a little-known episode involving Rajshri Productions.
At a time when the production house was dealing with financial difficulties, shooting for ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ was reportedly considered for a halt after Raj Kumar Barjatya decided to pause the project.
Singh advised that the film should continue.
The eventual blockbuster success gave the production a remarkable turnaround and became an important chapter in the studio’s history.
Her life away from the camera took a different path. Singh married producer Rajkumar Shahabadi, son of Vishwanath Prasad Shahabadi, who produced ‘Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’, regarded as the first Bhojpuri film.
The couple went on to have two children. Their daughter, Sheena Shahabadi, later entered the acting profession, continuing the family’s connection with cinema.
Singh did not allow her career to remain confined to the shadow of her debut. Over the years, she appeared in more than 20 films across Bollywood and regional cinema.
Her credits include ‘Sasural’, ‘Piya Milan’, ‘Papi Sansar’, ‘Sur Sangam’, ‘Jugni’, ‘Mukkabaaz’, ‘Super 30’ and ‘Zindagi Tumse Hi’.
Television also became part of her professional journey. She appeared in serials such as ‘Ghar Jamai’, ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’, ‘Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil’ and ‘Santoshi Maa’, reaching audiences beyond the cinema hall.
In later years, Singh gradually stepped away from the intensity of mainstream stardom.
Her creative interests found expression elsewhere as well.
She ventured into fashion through a designer boutique in Mumbai and also founded RTS Music Group. She has additionally contributed her voice to songs.
Yet, for all the different chapters that followed, her most enduring association remains the one created in 1982.
Singh has recalled that the arrival of Holi brings back memories of working on ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’, evoking a period she remembers for its simplicity and warmth.
That may be the lasting legacy of Sadhana Singh’s career.
She did not enter cinema with a carefully planned ambition to become a star. Instead, a chance encounter gave her one role, and that role gave Indian popular culture a character it never quite forgot.
For generations of viewers, she remains Gunja—not simply because it was her breakthrough performance, but because she made the character feel so natural that the distinction between actress and role seemed to disappear.

वाराणसी की एक बेफिक्र और खेलकूद पसंद करने वाली लड़की ने कभी अभिनेत्री बनने का सपना नहीं देखा था।
एक संयोग उन्हें राजश्री प्रोडक्शंस के सेट तक ले गया और वहीं से शुरू हुआ गूंजा बनने का सफर।
भारतीय सिनेमा में कुछ किरदार ऐसे होते हैं जो फिल्म खत्म होने के साथ खत्म नहीं होते।
वे दर्शकों की यादों में इतने गहरे उतर जाते हैं कि अभिनेता की अपनी पहचान भी उस किरदार के साथ जुड़ जाती है।
साधना सिंह के लिए ऐसा ही किरदार था ‘गूंजा’, जिसे उन्होंने 1982 की चर्चित फिल्म ‘नदिया के पार’ में निभाया था।
आज भी चार दशक से अधिक समय गुजर जाने के बाद जब साधना सिंह का नाम लिया जाता है, तो बड़ी संख्या में दर्शकों के जेहन में सबसे पहले गूंजा का चेहरा उभरता है।
यह लोकप्रियता किसी योजनाबद्ध स्टारडम का परिणाम नहीं थी, बल्कि एक ऐसे संयोग की देन थी जिसने उनकी पूरी जिंदगी की दिशा बदल दी।
वाराणसी में एक राजपूत परिवार में जन्मीं साधना सिंह का पारिवारिक जुड़ाव पंजाब से भी रहा।
अभिनय की दुनिया से उनका शुरुआती रिश्ता लगभग न के बराबर था। वह खेलकूद में दिलचस्पी रखने वाली, बास्केटबॉल खेलने वाली और अपने बेबाक, टॉमबॉय अंदाज के लिए जानी जाने वाली युवती थीं।
फिल्मों की चमक-दमक उन्हें आकर्षित नहीं करती थी।
लेकिन किस्मत ने उनके लिए कुछ और तय कर रखा था। एक दिन वह अपनी बहन सुरिंदर कौर के साथ फिल्म की शूटिंग देखने पहुंचीं।
सुरिंदर कौर शास्त्रीय नृत्य से जुड़ी थीं और इसी सिलसिले में साधना सिंह राजश्री प्रोडक्शंस के सेट पर गई थीं। वहाँ निर्देशक गोविंद मूनिस की नजर उन पर पड़ी।
साधना के सहज व्यक्तित्व और बिना बनावटीपन वाली उपस्थिति ने निर्देशक को प्रभावित किया।
यह मुलाकात महज एक संयोग बनकर नहीं रह गई। उन्हें फिल्म में मुख्य भूमिका का प्रस्ताव मिल गया और इसी के साथ उनका अभिनय सफर शुरू हुआ।
1 जनवरी 1982 को रिलीज हुई ‘नदिया के पार’ ने साधना सिंह को रातोंरात पहचान दिला दी।
फिल्म के केंद्र में उत्तर प्रदेश के जौनपुर के ग्रामीण परिवेश में पली-बढ़ी गूंजा की कहानी थी। सचिन पिलगांवकर ने चंदन की भूमिका निभाई थी और दोनों के बीच विकसित होने वाला संबंध फिल्म की भावनात्मक धुरी बना।
केशव प्रसाद मिश्र के उपन्यास ‘कोहबर की शर्त’ के पहले हिस्से पर आधारित इस फिल्म ने गांव के जीवन, रिश्तों और भावनाओं को बेहद सहज अंदाज में पर्दे पर उतारा।
राजश्री प्रोडक्शंस की इस फिल्म को दर्शकों का जबरदस्त प्यार मिला और यह बड़ी व्यावसायिक सफलता में बदल गई।
फिल्म की लोकप्रियता में इसके संगीत का भी बड़ा योगदान रहा। रवींद्र जैन के संगीत से सजे ‘जोगी जी धीरे धीरे’ और ‘कौन दिशा में लेके चला रे’ जैसे गीत दर्शकों की जुबान पर चढ़ गए।
इन गीतों की लोकप्रियता ने फिल्म की याद को भी लंबे समय तक जीवित रखा।
‘नदिया के पार’ की सफलता का असर साधना सिंह की निजी जिंदगी पर भी पड़ा।
उन्हें देखने के लिए लोगों की भीड़ जुटने लगी और सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रमों में कई बार पुलिस सुरक्षा की जरूरत पड़ती थी। सबसे खास बात यह थी कि दर्शकों ने अभिनेत्री को ही गूंजा के नाम से पहचानना शुरू कर दिया।
इस फिल्म की सफलता के पीछे एक ऐसा प्रसंग भी है, जिसका जिक्र अपेक्षाकृत कम होता है।
उस दौर में राजश्री प्रोडक्शंस आर्थिक परेशानियों से गुजर रहा था और फिल्म की शूटिंग रोकने पर भी विचार हुआ था।
बताया जाता है कि राज कुमार बड़जात्या के फिल्म को रोकने के फैसले के बीच साधना सिंह ने शूटिंग जारी रखने की सलाह दी।
फिल्म की सफलता ने बाद में हालात बदल दिए।
‘नदिया के पार’ की कामयाबी ने राजश्री प्रोडक्शंस को बड़ी राहत दी और साधना सिंह की भूमिका इस कहानी का एक उल्लेखनीय हिस्सा बन गई। वर्ष 1994 में आई ‘हम आपके हैं कौन…!‘ के लिए भी ‘नदिया के पार’ को प्रमुख प्रेरणाओं में माना जाता है।
पर्दे के बाहर साधना सिंह का जीवन भी फिल्मी परिवार से जुड़ा। उन्होंने निर्माता राजकुमार शाहाबादी से विवाह किया।
राजकुमार, भोजपुरी सिनेमा की पहली फिल्म मानी जाने वाली ‘गंगा मैय्या तोहे पियरी चढ़इबो’ के निर्माता विश्वनाथ प्रसाद शाहाबादी के बेटे हैं।
साधना और राजकुमार शाहाबादी के दो बच्चे हुए।
उनकी बेटी शीना शाहाबादी ने भी अभिनय को अपना पेशा चुना और इस तरह परिवार का फिल्म जगत से रिश्ता अगली पीढ़ी तक पहुंचा।
साधना सिंह का अभिनय सफर ‘नदिया के पार’ तक सीमित नहीं रहा। उन्होंने हिंदी और क्षेत्रीय सिनेमा की दो दर्जन से अधिक फिल्मों में काम किया।
‘ससुराल’, ‘पिया मिलन’, ‘पापी संसार’, ‘सुर संगम’, ‘जुगनी’, ‘मुक्काबाज’, ‘सुपर 30’ और ‘जिंदगी तुमसे ही’ उनकी उल्लेखनीय फिल्मों में शामिल हैं।
टेलीविजन पर भी उन्होंने अपनी मौजूदगी दर्ज कराई। ‘घर जमाई’, ‘जस्सी जैसी कोई नहीं’, ‘किस देश में है मेरा दिल’ और ‘संतोषी मां’ जैसे धारावाहिकों के जरिए वह छोटे पर्दे के दर्शकों तक भी पहुंचीं।
समय के साथ साधना सिंह ने फिल्मी चकाचौंध से कुछ दूरी बनाई, लेकिन रचनात्मक गतिविधियों से उनका जुड़ाव बना रहा।
मुंबई में उन्होंने फैशन डिजाइनिंग से जुड़ा अपना बुटीक शुरू किया। इसके अलावा उन्होंने आरटीएस म्यूजिक ग्रुप की शुरुआत की और कुछ गीतों में अपनी आवाज भी दी।
साधना सिंह ने एक बार ‘नदिया के पार’ की शूटिंग से जुड़ी होली की यादों का भी जिक्र किया था। उनके लिए वह दौर सादगी, अपनापन और कम जटिल जिंदगी की याद दिलाता है।
सिनेमा में उनका प्रवेश भले ही किसी महत्वाकांक्षी योजना का हिस्सा नहीं था, लेकिन एक आकस्मिक मुलाकात ने उन्हें ऐसा किरदार दे दिया जो दशकों बाद भी दर्शकों के बीच जिंदा है।
साधना सिंह ने अपने करियर में कई भूमिकाएं निभाईं, फिल्मों और धारावाहिकों में अलग-अलग किरदार किए और कैमरे के पीछे भी रचनात्मक रास्ते तलाशे। फिर भी उनकी सबसे मजबूत पहचान आज भी गूंजा ही है।
शायद यही किसी कलाकार की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि होती है—जब समय बीत जाए, फिल्म पुरानी हो जाए, लेकिन उसका निभाया किरदार लोगों की स्मृतियों में वैसा ही बना रहे।
साधना सिंह के लिए ‘गूंजा’ ऐसा ही किरदार है, जिसने उन्हें भारतीय सिनेमा की यादगार अभिनेत्रियों में एक स्थायी जगह दिलाई।
