Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam and iconic actor Kamal Haasan are all set to captivate audiences with their upcoming cinematic venture Thug Life, releasing in theatres on June 5.

The film marks a monumental reunion between the two legends, coming together after 37 years since their cult classic Nayakan (1987).

At a promotional event in Mumbai on Tuesday, the duo shared heartfelt insights into their creative camaraderie and deep-rooted respect for each other’s craft.

When asked about his first impression of Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam fondly recalled a story associated with the film Sadma. “I’ve heard this tale that’s always stayed with me.

When Kamal was planning Sadma in Tamil, after listening to the narration, he reportedly returned and reenacted the entire scene in the compound just to explain it. That moment made me fall in love with his artistry. I knew then — this man would become a legend.”

Revisiting the Timeless Magic of Sadma

Released in 1983, Sadma remains etched in the hearts of cinema lovers for its hauntingly beautiful storyline and unforgettable performances.

Kamal Haasan’s sensitive portrayal of a compassionate caretaker and Sridevi’s remarkable performance as a woman who regresses into childhood are often described as two of the finest acts in Indian film history.

Their on-screen chemistry is now considered iconic, and the film’s tragic climax has left generations of viewers in tears. While Sadma didn’t achieve massive box-office success upon release, it gradually gained cult status, cherished today for its emotional depth, nuanced screenplay, and poignant direction.

Sridevi’s ability to portray vulnerability with such raw authenticity, combined with Kamal Haasan’s soul-stirring climax performance, makes Sadma a cinematic treasure.

About Thug Life: A Fresh Tale from a Legendary Duo

Thug Life is not a sequel to Nayakan but a standalone narrative—offering a brand-new story, new characters, and a fresh canvas for Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan to explore their cinematic synergy.

The film has already created considerable excitement, largely due to the star power involved and the stellar technical team backing it.

Cast & Crew Highlights:

  • Kamal Haasan leads the ensemble cast.
  • Co-starring Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, and more.
  • Directed by Mani Ratnam.
  • Music by A.R. Rahman—his compositions are already generating fan buzz, especially the track Vinveli Nayaga (Galaxy Actor).
  • Ravi K. Chandran handles the cinematography.
  • Sreekar Prasad is in charge of editing.

The narrative of Thug Life delves into the gritty world of gangsters, examining the complexity of power struggles, loyalty, and redemption, while focusing on a deeply emotional father-son conflict at its core.

A Grand Launch and a Touch of Controversy

A high-profile audio launch has been scheduled for May 24, further fuelling the anticipation surrounding the film.

However, one romantic scene between Kamal Haasan and actress Abhirami has triggered online debate due to the noticeable age gap between the two actors.

While some viewers see it as a creative choice, others have raised questions about its appropriateness.

Despite the debate, fans are celebrating the return of this iconic actor-director duo. Kamal Haasan emphasized that Thug Life should not be viewed through the lens of nostalgia for Nayakan, urging audiences to embrace this film as a distinct, new experience.

“We want the audience to forget Nayakan when they watch Thug Life,” Kamal stated, highlighting the film’s unique narrative and intent.

As the countdown begins for Thug Life‘s release, expectations are high. With powerhouse talent on and off-screen, and the legacy of two cinematic giants driving it, this film promises to be more than just another gangster drama — it could well be another landmark in Indian cinema.
